• Name:: Renfrew Park Community Centre
• East Vancouver, B.C
• It is an example of a public service sector because according to their
mission statement they “Aim to provide cultural, intellectual and
physical activities through affordable recreation and leisure”. How?
Their primary concern is enhancing the society (Lunn, 2022 p3) by
providing an affordable means to.
• Connects to recreation because they provide a variety of
opportunities for the public to engage in such as swimming,
weightlifting, basketball and tennis.
3. Public Sector 2
• Name: Trout Lake Community Centre
• Where: Downtown Vancouver
• It is an example of a public service sector because they operated by the
Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation. It relates to recreation and
coaching, their facility offers over 200 programs such as dance, skating,
camps, martial arts and more. Giving opportunities for people of all ages
and providing a place where coaching can take place.
• Vancouver is a packed city with low and a recreation area like this allows
for more opportunities, a private facility for these programs would cost
much more due to rent therefor providing opporutnies deemed valuable by
society (Lunn, 2022 p3).
4. Public Sector 3
• Name: Clark Park
• Where: East Vancouver
• It is an example of a public service sector because they provide a local
open-spaced neighborhood park offering recreation activities such as
tennis, basketball, and soccer for free of charge, open to anyone and
wheelchair accessible. It connects to recreation and coaching by
providing recreation for disadvantaged and poor clients (Lunn, 2022,
p3).
• It connects to coaching as well by providing a means for coaching to
take place publicly.
5. Commercial Sector 1
• Name: Planet Ice
• Where: Coquitlam
• It is an example of a commercial sector because “the consumer” are the
customers renting the rink and the “supplier” is the rink owner. (MacLean,
Peterson, & Martin, 1985, p. 220, as cited in Karlis, 2011, p. 79).
• It relates to recreation because it is a major provider of recreation resulting
in capital, resources and wealth in our society. (Lunn, 2022, p7). It also
serves a type of public good, it is costly to run such a large facility and
having it open allows the sport of hockey, skating, and more to rise in the
area and allow for physical, mental and play benefits to youth and all ages.
6. Commercial Sector 2
• Name: Climb Base5
• Location: Coquitlam
• It is an example of a commercial sector because it allows for
employment opportunities, increase recreation opportunities for
residents and allows for new concepts to emerge (Lunn, 2022, p7).
• It relates to recreation because it provides a space for the public to
participate in an activity by providing capital for a service that is not
offered in many places and having it indoors allows for easier access
to this type of activity (Rock Climbing).
7. Commercial Sector 3
• Name: Eastside Boing Club
• Location: East Vancouver
• It is an example of a commercial sector because it allows for
increased recreation opportunities for residents (Lunn, 2022, p7).
Also, because it is a product (training program) consumers purchase
to provide capital to the facility.
• It connects to coaching because it allows for employment
opportunities for coaches, and recreation because it allows for a
variety of recreation for the public or members.
8. Voluntary Sector 1
• Name: Power To Be
• Location: Downtown Vancouver & Victoria
• It is an example of a voluntary sector because it is a non-profitable
organization providing the opportunity for disabled individuals to
access nature recreational activities such as hiking. They rely on
members and volunteers for their organization (Lunn, 2022, p10).
• It relates to recreation because they are providing a chance for
disabled individuals to experience recreation.
9. Voluntary Sector 2
• Name: North Shore Mountain Bike Association
• Location: North Vancouver
• It is a voluntary sector because they are a non-profit organization
dedicated to provide a sustainable trail network in the community,
therefore it relates to recreation by allowing recreational activities to
take place by preserving the trails. They rely on members to fundraise
and volunteers. (Lunn, 2022, p10).
10. Voluntary Sector 3
• Name: Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue
• Location: General Fraser Valley, B.C
• It is and voluntary sector because they rely on volunteers and
donations to help keep them running and they are a non-profit
organization (Lunn, 2022, p10).
• It relates to recreation because they are helping recreation activities
outdoors stay safe and provide assistance to those who encounter
issues or injuries during recreation activities, therefore promoting
recreation activities outdoors knowing there is some assistance in
case things go wrong
