3. Why its Public
Fraser Heights Recreation Center is
considered a public sector because one
of the goals of a public sector is to “to
provide recreation that because of its
nature continually reinforces values and
ideals of establishing and maintaining a
healthy lifestyle to the user” (Lunn, 2020,
p. 3). Recreation centers were
established to provide the surrounding
community with free/affordable services
to stay healthy and to be able to keep a
healthy lifestyle no matter what income
class. Recreation centers are accessible
to everyone and “is necessary for society
public good” (Lunn, 2020, p.3).

Recreation
It is considered recreation because this facility
provides different types of leisurely activities that
people can take part in to stay active. Recreation
centers are provided by the municipal
government in which “the recreation needs of the
general public are directly addressed through the
offering of recreation services” (Lunn, 2020, p. 5).
Recreation centers can be found in every city and
are considered a general need to the public. This
is the reason for why recreation centers are either
free or very affordable, so they can be accessed
by everyone.

6. Why its Public
Fraser Heights Secondary is a public
sector because it is a public school which
provides free education for the youth in
the community. Public schools provide
“opportunities deemed valuable by
society” like gymnasiums, workout
rooms, and more for free (Lunn, 2020,
p.3)

Physical
Education
It relates to physical education because Fraser
Heights Secondary provides programs/classes
for students to take part in sports and learn
about the important of sport. The school also
has specialized programs including exercise
science which makes it easy for students tp
further their learning.

Elementary

9. Why its Public
Fraser Wood Elementary is considered a
public sector because it is a public
elementary open to children
kindergarten to grade 7. Does not
require a fee.

Physical
Education
Just like Fraser Heights Secondary, Fraser
Wood Elementary provides students with
physical education courses. These courses
provide a basis of learning for young students
who are starting to learn about exercise.

(Commercial)
Pacific Academic is classified as
Commercial leisure because “consumer
pays and for which the supplier expects
to make a profit” (Lunn, 2020, p.6).
Students pay a tuition fee but are given
more in-depth classes about leisure and
exercise. The school makes income from
the students in return.

Physical
Education
Pacific Academy is known to have advanced
physical education classes. Students are given
opportunities to learn through fieldwork and
other learning opportunities. Physical
education classes are taught multiple times a
week. This can relate to coaching also because
the school has multiple sports teams including
volleyball, basketball and more.

15. Why its Private
(Commercial)
2 in 1 soccer is a private soccer coaching
origination for young children, youth and
toddlers. A payment is given to the
company and in return, the athletes get
to take part in an 8-week soccer program
with high-class coaches.

Coaching
Athletes take part in the 8-week program and
are coached based on skill level and
experience. The training groups will meet
twice a week for specialized training for skills,
tactics and technique. On the weekends,
groups will then take part in competition to
show what they have learned.

Club
• Type of Sector: Private (Commercial)
• Relation to SPSC 2210: Coaching

18. Why its Private
(Commercial)
Surrey United Soccer Club is a private
sector because “consumer pays and for
which the supplier expects to make a
profit” (Lunn, 2020, p.6). Parents pay the
club a fee and in return, their child is
placed on a team with an experienced
coach. The club makes a profit from the
fees.

After the fees are paid, children on placed a
team with an experienced coach and other
athletes of their skill level.

• Relation to SPSC 2210: Coaching

Volunteer
(Non-Profit)
Fraser Heights Secondary has athletic
teams that are dependent on volunteer
coaches. According to the text “all
voluntary sector leisure and recreation
organizations have one thing in common
– they rely on the efforts of members
and volunteers for sustained survival”
(Lunn, 2020, p. 10).

Coaching
This is considered coaching because a
volunteer coach is required to coach the team.
The coach does not get paid to coach but
instead volunteers his/her time to allow
students to participate in sports. Coach can
also get students to help and become a
student assistant coach.

Summer Day Camps
• Type of Sector: Volunteer (Non-Profit)
• Relation to SPSC 2210

24. Why its
Volunteer
(Non-Profit)
City of Surrey allows youth who are 17-
18 years old and aren’t old enough to be
a fulltime paid Summer Day Camp leader,
to be a volunteer leader instead. The
Volunteer do the same job and lead
children/youth summer camps, but they
don’t get paid. Instead, volunteers gain
volunteer hours which they can use on
resumes when apply for schools or jobs.
According to the text, the volunteer
sector is where the largest amount of
leisure and recreation organizations exist
(Lunn, 2020. p. 10).

25. Why its
Recreation
These Summer Day Camps are organized by
the City of Surrey at the multiple recreation
centers across the city. The camps are
organized by age group which range from
toddlers to preteen camps. There are different
types of camps including, basketball camp,
soccer camp, multisport camp, etc. Each
camps is supervised by two- or three-day
camp leaders.

• Type of Sector: Volunteer (Non-Profit)
• Relation to SPSC 2210: Physical Education

27. Why its
Volunteer
(Non-Profit).
Kid sport is a club the is run by students
and at least one teacher at Fraser
Heights Secondary. Both volunteer their
time to reach goals set out by the club to
help children who need sport
equipment. There is no profit being
made and all the sporting equipment is
donated by the community.

28. Why its
Physical
Education
• Other then supplying children in need with
sport equipment, volunteers also make it a
goal to teach them about the importance of
sport.
