1. What kind of institution might
distribute your film?
2. Before we talk about my film being distributed by an institution we first have
to have a grasp on the idea of what an institution is.
An institution is a company that owns numerous companies in a form of
media- for example Lions gate is an institution which distributes films such
as “The Hunger Games” and the “Saw” movies.
An institution in media will often be on more than one platform of media, for
example an institution may also run a magazine or have it’s own TV channel
as well as its main form of media.
What is an institution
3. Film institutions will often specialise in particular fields. For example
artificial eye is a film company which specialises in independent British films
such as “unknown pleasure” and “I Could Read the Sky” while larger film
companies such as 21th Century Fox may specialise, but not limit
themselves, in Hollywood blockbusters.
Our thriller would benefit most from an institution which specialises in
horror and thriller films.
Film institutions
4. One example of a film institution which does this is “hammer” films.
Hammer films is a British institution which specialises in horror films hitting
it’s peak in the 1950’s-1970’s. Hammer films distributed films such as “Curse
of the mummy” and “Phantom of the Opera.” It is known for it’s more
contemporary films. It’s most recent success was “The Woman in Black”
which hit a box office of $128.5 million and starred the British actor Daniel
Radcliff.
Hammer films was also the distributors of the first colour British film which
was “The Curse of Frankenstein”
Examples
5. Our film comes under the category of a thriller film which at points has
elements of horror. This is why I believe that Hammer would be a film which
could successfully distribute our film. Hammer would appeal to the gothic
side of our film and be able to get the correct target audience which is young
people which are always up for a thrill.
Our Film
6. Another advantage of using Hammer as our distributing institution would be
that they would be able to attract our target audience. With young females
and fans of horror and thrillers being the audience for our movie Hammer
has a previously accumulated audience of Gothic-genre fans and thriller
fans.
“Hammer” has also worked with comic book lines such as Titan comics to
produce a line of comics based on the “Dracula” film. This would mean they
also had accumulated a younger audience, seeing a comic books appeal to
more of a teenage audience.
How audience is affected
7. A film which was distributed by Hammer films similar to ours is The Quiet
Ones, which like out film is a supernatural thriller aimed at college students.
It also follows the same themes as ours of supernatural mystery and demons
in general. The films was successful making $3,880,053 in its opening
weekend. The film grossed $8,509,867 in the US and $9,325,000
internationally; the worldwide total was $17,834,867.
Another similar film would be the hammer distributed film “demons of the
mind” which like our film focuses a lot on the human psyche and what
affects it. The theme of mentality and humanity in this film would be similar
to the themes addressed in our thriller.
Similar distributed films
8. Hammer film production has what can almost be described as a habit for
creating films which end up with a “cult following”. A cult audience is an
audience of super fans which are passionate and dedicated to particular
films. Although a film may not have the most amount of viewers by
attracting a cult audience you open your film up to a hugely dedicated
audience which have the opportunity to make a film a classic in the thriller
world. An example of a cult classic film is “Rocky horror picture show” which
has a timeless audience collected through it’s cult film nature.
One example of Hammer doing this is with the 1958 film “Dracula” which
shaped the known world of gothic thrillers and the idea of vampires in
general. As a result of a still going cult following for Dracula the name has
become a household name known by almost everyone.
With the opportunity of the die-hard fan base which Hammer film acquired a
cult audience would be the ideal type of audience for our film.
