This document discusses potential film production and distribution companies for a low-budget British thriller film. It suggests that Momentum Pictures would be a suitable option as they have experience distributing similar genre films of comparable budgets. Momentum has had success with films like The Woman in Black and Calvary that share tonal or thematic similarities. If a higher budget was available, the document recommends considering one of the "Big Six" major film studios like Paramount Pictures, citing their experience with thriller films like Psycho and The Godfather that involve plot twists and religious themes similar to the film being discussed.

Distributing a low-budget British thriller film
1. What kind of media institution mightWhat kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?distribute your media product and why?
2.
The product that we’ve created
is a low budget British film.
One of the companies that
could potentially produce
and/or distribute our film is
Momentum Pictures. This is a
film distribution company that
released approximately 20
theatrical films a year since it
was set up in 2000. The most
successful films they produced
were The Young Victoria, The
King’s Speech, Amélie, Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,
P.S. I love you and others.
3.
Another film that also matches
the ethos of the film we’ve shot is
The Woman In Black. It’s a
supernatural horror film that
involves thrill, deaths and the
whole plot is full of ambiguity
and darkness. This makes our
film suitable to be produced by
this independent institution.
4.
Another film Momentum pictures
produced in 2014 was “Calvary”.
Although the genre of this film is
drama, which is far from thriller we’re
working with, the religious theme can
be traced in both products. The
historical background of the other two
famous films “The Young Victoria”
and “The King’s Speech” also matches
the ideological background of the film
we’ve made. For these reasons
Momentum Pictures would be a good
company to produce and distribute
our film.
5.
This company is a subsidiary of U.S.
media conglomerate Viacom. One of
the most famous thrillers they
produced back in in collaboration
with Alfred Hitchcock was Psycho. It
has a big twist in the plot and is
famous for its climaxes, that are also
present in out thriller, and this is why
the company would be likely to
produce and market our film.
However, if we
were to produce a
big budget film, we
would focus on “The
Big Six” companies.
This would give us
advantages of high
budget allowance,
experience and good
knowledge of these
companies. For
example, we could
work with
Paramount Pictures.
6.
Another successful film they
produced is the Godfather, that is of
the same thriller genre. It also involves
religious theme, therefore matches our
film quite a lot. The fil
m is very mature and mysterious, yet
violent at the same time, so the
institution would have an experience
in distribution of such films, therefore
our film would be likely to turn out
successful.
7.
As regards the audiences,
Paramount pictures has prioduced
films of a huge range of genres,
including cartoons (Shrek), action
movies with special effects
(Transformers, Mission Impossible),
science fictions (Star Trek,
Interstellar), drama (Forrest Gump,
Titanic), so they would be able to
find ways to market our film
successfully. For example, in
marketing of The Godfather they
used both traditional media
(internationally in different
languages + trailers before thrillers
in cinemas) and new media (trailers
online on Youtube) to attract wider
audiences, which could also be used
to market our film.
