Hammer Films would be a suitable distributor as they regularly produce similar thriller and horror genres. However, as a British institution, Hammer Films may not provide broad international recognition. 20th Century Fox would be a better choice as a major American studio that distributes globally. They have experience with thriller films and their recognizable logo would signal that the product is worth watching. Disney would not be a good fit as they focus on family-friendly content, whereas thrillers are not family oriented.
1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
2. Bearing in mind that our media product is a psychological thriller, I had to take
that in consideration when choosing an appropriate media institution to
distribute our final product. An institution I found when researching media
companies was Hammer Films. Hammer Films are notorious for their various
gothic horror, and thriller films, such as the infamous Dracula (1958), The Curse
of Frankenstein (1957), and the most recent, Woman in Black (2012). I would
choose this institution to distribute our final product because they are based in
the UK, and because the genre of our media product is extremely similar to the
genre that Hammer Films regularly produce, so they have experience in dealing
with films similar to our media product. However, as it’s a British institution, it’s
very unlikely that my media product will be recognised abroad, and as our film
appeals to a mass audience, it would be preferred that our product attracts as
much people as possible.

recognisable amongst
people who enjoy thriller
films.

3. So, in response to this, another appropriate media institution I would use to
distribute my final media product is 20th Century Fox. 20th Century Fox is an
American film studio, distributor, and also one of the 6 major American film
studios. This instantly tells me that our media product would be bound to attract
a wider audience because 20th Century Fox is well known. As well distributing
genres such as comedies, romances, action and adventure films, 20th Century
Fox have also distributed thriller films such as Taken, Planet of the Apes,
Predator, and Independence Day. Moreover, this media institution has also
distributed two of the highest grossing movies worldwide (Avatar, and Titanic). I
would choose this media institution to distribute our media product because
their logo is something everyone recognises, and individuals would instantly
assume that our media product is worth watching, just through association.
A media institution that would not distribute my media product would be
Disney. Disney are a multinational mass media and entertainment
conglomerate who are popular for distributing family-type films, such as
Inside Out, Frozen, The Good Dinosaur, and Toy Story. Their classification
ratings are almost always ‘U’s. Considering the fact that our final media
product is a thriller, it would be inappropriate for an institution such as
Disney to distribute our product, as they clearly have a reputation on being
family friendly, something which the thriller genre is not known for. On the
other hand, Disney would be useful because of their popularity, our media
product would be distributed to millions of people globally.
