Media distribution reasearch
1.
2. I have carried out research into several
psychological thrillers and the companies that
distribute them. In this slideshow I will discuss how
my results will affect how I distribute my final
product (a trailer).
3. 'The Sixth Sense', a psychological thriller/drama, is
distributed by Buena Vista Pictures. Buena Vista
Pictures is a distribution branch on Walt Disney
Studios' . Walt Disney Studios distribute films of many
genres and everyone would know that Disney tend to
produce a lot of children/family films a would
immediately think that distributing a psychological
thriller is out of character. But, due to their many
branches, they have to opportunity to spread out
amongst the market and make more
money. Disney's distribution branches include : Pixar
Animation Studio, Marvel Studio, Touchstone
Pictures and LucasFilm.
4. ‘Seven’ is another psychological thriller and
is distributed by New Line Cinema which was
parented by Turner Broadcasting System at
that time. New Line Cinema tends to
specialise in a lot of horror and thriller. They
are known for distributing the ‘Nightmare on
Elm Street’ series and various other horror
and thrillers such as ‘Final Destination’ . This
could be a suitable distribution for our film
‘Tangent’ as it distributes films of a similar
genre and those films seem to exhibit a great
amount of success making tens of millions of
dollars worldwide.
5. ‘Silence of the Lambs’ was directed by
Jonathan Demme and, another psychological
Thriller, was distributed by Orion Pictures.
They have distributed films such as ‘Dances
With Wolves’ however, they don’t seem to
produce many thrillers and horrors in all the
time that they have been active and they
certainly don’t specialise in that genre. They
seem to distribute films that hold more
dramatic and perhaps romantic content. A
distribution institution like Orion Pictures
probably wouldn’t suit my film for these
reasons.
6. ‘Psycho’ is more of a horror than a thriller. It is directed by
renowned cinematographer Alfred Hitchcock and was
released in 1960 around when horror was becoming a lot
more successful. This film itself was a pioneer effort into
the launch of the genre. It was distributed by Paramount
Pictures originally and was the distributed by Universal
Pictures for later releases. Both of these companies are
known for distributing just about every genre out there (as
long as they see success in the film, they’ll distribute it).
Paramount are known for distributing famous movie series
such as ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Transformers’ whilst
Universal remains just as impressive with products like
‘The Fast and Furious’ series and the ‘Despicable Me’
series under their belt. Both Paramount and Universal
would be suitable for our film as they are extremely
versatile companies in terms of their distribution ventures.
7. After carrying out my distribution research I
discovered that many companies would be
suitable to distribute my product as a lot of
them remain very flexible in their choices of
products in terms of genre, they just need to
see success in it.
