G324 Media Studies – Evaluation
3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Throughout our project, we got multiple pieces of audience feedback using many
different techniques. The simplest thing we have done is easily just ask people
from our classroom.
Earlier in the project, we went round our classroom to ask our classmate’s
opinions on our products. We showed them our current music video (Which was
unfinished at the time), album and advert and asked people to do a small review.
Unfortunately, we made no audio, video, or written recording of the responses
though we de remember what was said.
Due to our music video being unfinished at the time, the most common response
from our classmates was that we needed more footage (Obviously) but other
than that we actually got some quite constructive feedback. One thing that was
very important to us from the very beginning was to give our music video a dark
theme. To help coordinate all three products, we decided to give everything a
dark purple theme. Just about everyone said that this was a very good effect and
that it really helped make the video feel dark like it needed to. But of course our
video wasn’t perfect, many people said that it didn’t feel fast-paced enough.
Many people advised us to make more jump-cuts in our video as some shots
went on for too long.
When we showed people our digipak design, many people wondered why it was
a tad more brightly coloured than our other products, though once we explained
it was to make it stand out among other albums on a shelf most people
understood and said that it was a good idea.
As well as showing our classmates our products, we also made an online
questionnaire which we emailed to all students in our college. Obviously not
everybody replied, would we did get a fair amount. Because we could not show
people our products with this questionnaire, it consisted of more general
questions about music. It included questions like “What are your favourite music
genres?” and “What kind of things would you expect to see in the music video of
a rock song?” Even though these questions were a lot more general, we were still
able to take in their advice and apply it to our own work. We learned what most
people would expect from music videos in our genre and used that to improve
our own music video.
For example, we learned that it is very common for footage of the band playing
the song to be included in rock music videos. Once we knew that, we decided to
also include footage of the band playing as well as narrative in our music video.
This was a great decision because we feel that it greatly improved the quality of
our music video.
In short, we learned the kind of things that people expect from rock and emo
music videos (Dark theme, dull imagery, performance in the video and fast-
paced-cuts) and what we could do to improve our music video.

Evaluation - Question 3 Draft

  • 1. G324 Media Studies – Evaluation 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback? Throughout our project, we got multiple pieces of audience feedback using many different techniques. The simplest thing we have done is easily just ask people from our classroom. Earlier in the project, we went round our classroom to ask our classmate’s opinions on our products. We showed them our current music video (Which was unfinished at the time), album and advert and asked people to do a small review. Unfortunately, we made no audio, video, or written recording of the responses though we de remember what was said. Due to our music video being unfinished at the time, the most common response from our classmates was that we needed more footage (Obviously) but other than that we actually got some quite constructive feedback. One thing that was very important to us from the very beginning was to give our music video a dark theme. To help coordinate all three products, we decided to give everything a dark purple theme. Just about everyone said that this was a very good effect and that it really helped make the video feel dark like it needed to. But of course our video wasn’t perfect, many people said that it didn’t feel fast-paced enough. Many people advised us to make more jump-cuts in our video as some shots went on for too long. When we showed people our digipak design, many people wondered why it was a tad more brightly coloured than our other products, though once we explained it was to make it stand out among other albums on a shelf most people understood and said that it was a good idea. As well as showing our classmates our products, we also made an online questionnaire which we emailed to all students in our college. Obviously not everybody replied, would we did get a fair amount. Because we could not show people our products with this questionnaire, it consisted of more general questions about music. It included questions like “What are your favourite music genres?” and “What kind of things would you expect to see in the music video of a rock song?” Even though these questions were a lot more general, we were still able to take in their advice and apply it to our own work. We learned what most people would expect from music videos in our genre and used that to improve our own music video. For example, we learned that it is very common for footage of the band playing the song to be included in rock music videos. Once we knew that, we decided to also include footage of the band playing as well as narrative in our music video. This was a great decision because we feel that it greatly improved the quality of our music video.
  • 2. In short, we learned the kind of things that people expect from rock and emo music videos (Dark theme, dull imagery, performance in the video and fast- paced-cuts) and what we could do to improve our music video.
