Evaluation 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Throughout all stages of the music video making process, we had to ensure that we were
making the target audience happy and that we were matching the feedback that they were
giving us. Due to the fact that we did one draft and then one final piece, we made sure that
we were getting as much feedback as possible in the early stages of constructing the music
video.
In regards to the feedback during the construction of the video, I got some people to give
me feedback whilst I was editing the video on each section in order to check that it was
good enough to show as I wanted each part to be as good as it could be. One of the main
things that we ensured that we checked was the use of the different filters as we needed to
get that right in order to give off a certain feel for the video and get the right reaction from
the audience. However, when experimenting with the transitions we also had to check that
they were not too extreme for the style of video that we were going for. This was
particularly important when it came to the drawing transition as it is very complex with a lot
of things going on at once so we did not want to overload the audience with it being a
medium pace song we didn’t want to stray away from the convention of the editing
matching the pace of the song. However, we got positive feedback for that transition and it
was said that it was one of the best points in the music video. When it came to the filters, on
the people that we ‘consulted’ suggested that one way how we make it more interesting is if
we change the filters in time with the music almost like a transition. They also suggested
that we did this with the smoke scene as it would be visually pleasing to look at. I think that
listening to the audience at this stage in the construction process was especially important
as it meant that they felt involved throughout. In addition, I think that one of the empirical
things of this process is that if you are giving the audience exactly what they are asking for
then the result in this is that the target audience will enjoy it a lot more.
For our first feedback session, we showed a few focused groups the video in order to get a
feel on how they are towards the video and whether the target audience would enjoy it as
this is the people that we are aiming towards. We asked that they would be more critical
than say good things as we felt as though saying good things about the video would not help
us improve as much as constructive criticismwould in the long run. From this session that
we had, we gathered the things that the target audience were not liking as much which
were the font and the bike parade. After gathering this information, I asked the audience to
develop on their information. The group said they just wanted to see the font be a lot more
typical of the genre as they felt as though it felt a bit out of place and that it should be a
colour that stands out more. From this, we took this information into account and
researched the font that the EDM genre typically have and when we went to shoot some
more filming to improve it, we found that the colour of the smoke was very appealing so we
thought that we could use this throughout our work as our colour. In terms of the bike
parade, we had to ensure that we linked the idea of change in the video throughout all of it.
When we went to film more to add more into the video, we filmed a car at night going past
the male (point of view) and then transitioned into the bike scene on order to add antithesis
from the dark car to the fluorescent bikes. From this audience feedback, it meant that we
were improving our video at all times with the help of the target audience. If we did not
follow the feedback that we got, I think the result of this would be that the video would not
be as successful when it comes to the end product as the target audience wouldn’t have
enjoyed it or had a say in it.
When it came to getting the music video out for the target audience to see, we had to think
about how we were going to get feedback. We decided that social media would be the best
way to get the music video to them as the age group that we were focusing on throughout
were the people that would be typically using social media. As a cause of this, we sent a few
people in target audience the video and asked for them to share it as the majority of
marketing is done by the people themselves when it comes to social media. We used
Facebook to do this as we feel as though this was an up to date social media platform. We
found that this worked as we were able to get 50 views in one weekend on our first draft of
feedback. Putting it on YouTube also meant that more people that we could not contact
could view it and we were able to get some people giving positive feedback. An example of
this was one our first draft on YouTube:
In addition to this, we also sent the video to the artist in hopes that they will give feedback
and this will be one of the most significant pieces of feedback that we get as if the artist is
not happy with the video then there would have been no point in it as they need to put
across a certain image to their fans.
We did not only have feedback on the video but we also made sure that we had target
audience feedback when it came to the ancillary tasks as we felt as though it was important
to have this cohesion between us and the audience throughout the entire stage so that they
felt involved with every aspect. However, due to the fact that this was not a large project,
we didn’t go into as much depth when it came to the feedback. The reason behind this was
that the video had a much larger significance to the overall so we had to ensure that it was
as good as it could possibly be.
In terms of the poster and the CD cover, the majority of the feedback was given on the
orientation of everything as we had to ensure that everything felt as though it was in the
right place. We also got positive feedback with the main image when we first made the CD
cover so we decided to use this effective image to our advantage and we used it on our CD
cover in addition to the poster. The audience didn’t give a lot of feedback for us to work
with when it came to the ancillary tasks and even with the focus group that we had, the
audience only gave positive feedback so we did not get a lot of constructive criticism.
