Evaluation Question 3
1. What have you learnt from your audience feedback.. Question 3 -
2. Feedback from classmates.. It is important for us to conduct relevant audience feedback, not only asking the general public what they think of our video, but also to gather a group of people we believe to be our target audience. We first showed our video to our media group who gave us their opinions at end end, heres what we found out; 'Black and white gives a grundey effect, and it gives the video an edge - it works. 'good performance‘ This comment shows that our actor did a good performance and the audience thought he was a real music artist, the lip syncing was good. 'editing looked very proffesional' and 'Lip sync is good but out at times.' 'miseen scene is spot on for target audience and setting are well thought about' 'using the studio makes it seem more like a music video‘ Shows we thought about location a lot. But i felt we could of improved it by using more varied locations. 'ilike the starting and ending with the fast pace editing', 'good mise en scene‘ 'really good performance', 'good lighting and locations'.
3. Feedback from focus group.. Secondly we held a focus group with three members from our target audience; We asked.... How have we captured connotations of the grime culture in our music video? How do the digipak, magazine advert and video combine to create a house style (then defined house style for them)? How could the music video be improved to be realistic in grime culture? And would you expect to see the digipak and magazine advert on big retailers? (How realistic are they).
4. Youtube Feedback.. This is a screen shot from www.youtube.com, this is in information from our media music video. From this you can clearly see 135 people have watched our video, this feedback is fairly interesting as we don't actually know who has watched our video but if you look at the ‘Audiences’ section is clearly shows that our video is most popular the male gender, this is great feedback for us as this is our specified target audience. As well as the gender being male, the most popular age range is between 13-17. This is ok feedback as well because our target audience is somewhere around this region.
5. What have we learnt.. Audience feedback is essential to see if your music video was a success as the reason why you have created the 3 media products was to sell and promote the band and to please your audience. I firstly wanted to see what people in my target audience would think of the .The methods I used to gain gain audience feedback was first for my A2 media class to view the video and then to leave comments on pieces of paper and to stay anonymous. I had also used the social networking site facebook to show the video and gain responses from many different people, this type of audience feedback wasnt successful in my eyes as i felt people were not taking me seriously.. I also set up a media focus group with a number of friends and asked them various questions about my music video and ancillary products. I believe all my methods of obtaining audience feedback was overall successful and i was able to gain many different peoples views and my own target audiences views. This was important as I wanted to gain a deep and valid understanding on what people really thought about my music video and print tasks. Overall i would use qualitatvive research as you can gain responses quicker through speaking to someone rather than using sites such as Facebookwhich would takelonger and ay not be as effective.
6. Continued.. From various types of audience research we have found that; The majority of people enjoyed our music video.. They felt that Locations, Mise en scen, our performer, editing and lip syncing were all good. After reading these comments I was very pleased as i felt people wouldn't understand our video due to it being a different genre. The grime genre is very niche and only a selected few choose to the listen to the music. Due to most of class not liking grime music i felt that people wouldnt enjoy our music video. But it turned out that our class feedback was brilliant for us. All comments we received back were positive with only a few minor technical faults, these were also good as it showed how we could of improved and made our video better. One improvement we would of made was to expand the shot locations. Due to our group being behind on filming we only had time to create a music video within college grounds. If we would of had more time we would of filmed in much more grimey locations such as flats, alleys and parks.
7. A bit of theory... Andrew Goodwin – He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require. Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features in music videos. They are:A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics. Our video was an amplifying video, I was worried about this as I didn't think people would understand our video. Culture capital - In terms of cultural capital, our A2 Media class took their existing knowledge of the grime culture into perspective. Although many class mates didn't have a clue what the Grime genre was about, they still had a rough idea and associated our video with that specific genre through connotations e.g. Dark, Hood’s and Graffiti. Cultural Studies – I intended to create a music video with a preferred reading which is expected so it creates a certain meaning towards our target audience. The one problem with our video is it could create an oppositional meaning as people may wonder why a white british male is ‘rapping’ instead of a stereotypical grime artist – a black male.
