2. Aim of our audience feedback
We found our audience feedback very important as it provided us with
various information of the audiences likes and dislikes, and there
expectations of music videos based on different genres.
We collected our feedback through interviews and surveys, meaning
we were able to obtain both qualitative and quantitative data.
Through interviews we were able to gain honest opinions on peoples
music video preference this meant our findings had validity.
Through surveys we were able to correlate our findings and find, for
example, which age group/sex preferred which specific genre, which
type of music videos and if they believe if it is important that the artist
is present in the music video.
When planning our music video this then allowed us to include certain
aspects that we believed would suit our target audience best.
3. Our primary research video consisted of 6 questions;
• what is your favorite genre? Why?
• Do you watch music videos?
• What's your favorite type of music video?
• How do you watch music videos?
• Do music videos have an influence on you?
• Is it important that an artist appears in a music video?
We chose these questions in order to help assist our research and find out more about
our audience preferences
We collected data from students and teachers, of all ages, at our school.
Our findings can be found on the next slide.

5. PRIMARY RESEARCH SURVEY
• We also created a survey using SurveyMonkey and had that emailed
to family members, work and school colleagues, and to the public.
• We asked similar questions to the video, so we could reach a wider
range of people.
• To enable us to target the best audience for our film and to
understand the audiences expectations, we created the survey to
find out important demographics. This then enable us to construct
audience profiles for our chosen target audience.
• The purpose of us doing a survey was so we could compared
quantitative data against the qualitative data from the interview.
8. Application
After retrieving the data from our survey and video we chose to create a music video
for an indie pop song, as both indie and pop genres had the most votes. We also
decided to post our video on YouTube as that is where almost all people (according to
our research) go to watch music video. Not all, but many people we received data off
believed it is important for the artist to be present in a music video, for this reason we
chose to have a character lip-syncing as if she was the artist in our video. Although
results show people prefer narrative music videos we believed that a conceptual based
music video with elements of performance would be more suitable for the genre and
for the song we used.
When looking at our survey responses individually, we could see that more girls had
votes for the genres indie or pop. Therefore, our primary target audience demographic
will be women aged between 15-20. Due to the age being 15-20 years old our socio-
economic profile classification will be from category E, as most people of that age are
students or non-skilled workers. It was also evident that the people who votes indie
music were mostly white Caucasian, which is why we have chosen our primary target
audience to be white Caucasians.
9. Audience Feedback Of Our Music Video
Once we had finished our music video, we asked people that fit the criteria of our primary
target audience to watch the video and give us positive and negative feedback. We
interviewed 8 students from our school.
Positive Feedback Negative Feedback
1 “I really like the scenes with the coloured (gel)
lights, I think it looks really professional”
“I could see in some of the shots that the character was wearing
jeans and convers under her dress”
2 “I liked haw you overlaid some of the shots so
there was two of her”
“At the beginning, when she’s running trough the forest the
camera is a bit shaky”
3 “I think the use of the blue flare was very creative
and original”
“I could see a change in lighting in some of the shots, which
didn’t look intentional”
4 “The very first shot is really memorable and I like
how you included it on your magazine advert and
album, it makes it recognisable’”
“I noticed in some shots there was a slight glitch or change in
lighting during some long shots”
5 “I think the duration of the shots towards the end
of the video worked really well with the beat of the
music”
“I think the first shot of her lip-syncing is maybe a bit too long for
a static shot, I think it would have looked eve better if it had a
slight zoom.
6 “I loved the shots with the gel lights” “Some of the tracking shots were a bit shaky”
7 “I think the first shot with the lantern is really well
positioned, using the rule of thirds”
“I could see her jeans underneath her dress when she was in the
forest”
8 “I like the shot of the trees spinning” “I think the you should have included more shots similar to the
shot at 1:25”
10. What we have learnt
After receiving our feedback, we now know if we were to re-film or re-create
our music video, what we would keep the same and how we could improve it.
It is clear that most people liked our shots, particularly the ones filmed with
the gel lights in the black box studio and our opening shot where we filmed
the trees spinning vertically upwards. We also had positive feedback on our
editing, some people found that the overlaid shots worked really well in our
video. Another audience member said they liked how we edited the shots to
the beat of the video to make the shots in unison with the music.
However, one major negative feedback was that the audience could see the
character was wearing jeans and converse with her dress, next time we would
either have a costume more appropriate to the weather, or we would film on
a warmer day so our actress didn’t have to wear extra layers. Another
negative comment that was brought up a few times is the light flickers that
can be seen in some of our shots. If we were to re-film, we would make sure
the camera isn’t set on automatic and therefore the flickers would not have
shown. One other flaw in our work is one of the tracking shots when in the
forest was slightly shaky which made the video look less professional.
