• Fungal infection is called mycosis. Mycoses are
generally long-lasting infections because fungi
grow slowly. Mycoses are classified into four
groups according to the level of depth and mode
of entry. They are:
• Systemic mycosis: deep within the body
• Cutaneous mycosis: involves epidermis, hair and
nails. It is also called dermatomycosis.
• Subcutaneous mycosis: beneath the skin
• Opportunistic mycosis: Endogenous infections can
occur in abnormal conditions like in case of the

immunocompromised via drugs or AIDS or under
antibiotic treatment.
Endogenous opportunistic mycosis involves
candidiasis caused by yeast called candida albican
found in mouth and vagina normally.
Exogenous infections are caused by Cryptococcus,
Pneumocystis and Aspergillus, etc.
Aspergillus also produces afflatoxin which is
responsible for stomach cancer.

• Tinea capitis –- head infection
• Tinea faciei --- face infection
• Tinea cruris --- inguinal infection
• Tinea unguium –- nail infection
• Tinea pedis --- foot infection
