2. Introduction
Yeasts:
• Yeasts are eukaryotic,single-
celled microorganisms
classified as member of the
fungus kingdom.
• Two separate class: the
Ascomycetes and the
Basidiomycetes

3. Medically Significant Yeasts
The clinically significant
genera Of yeasts for
man include:
• Candida
• Cryptococcus
• Saccharomyces
• Torulopsis
• Trichosporon

4. Candida:
• Canddidiasis is a fungul infection caused by yeasts which
belong to genus Candida.
• Responsible for a wide range of superficial and systemic
infections.
• Contributing factor:
- underlying diseases
- increased moisture.
. Nail candidiasis Oral candidiasis
5. Cryptococcus:
• Causative organism: C. neoformans
• Most frequently associated with infection immunocompromised
patients, particularly those with AIDS.
• pulmonary infection can lead to disseminated forms of the
disease where the eyes, skin and bones become infected.
CryptococcosisPulmonary infection by
Cryptococcus
6. Torulopsis:
• Causative organism: T. glabarta
• Causes disease mostly in hospitalized patients or
immunocompromised people.
• Underlying disease or environmental factors that
lead to increased moisture contribute to the disease
process.
Fungemia- due to torulopsis
infectionPneumonia
7. Saccharomyces:
• Causative organism: S. cerevisiae
• Responsible for occasional cases
of thrush, vulvovaginitis and
urinary tract infections.
• Disease is seen often in patient
who have no apparent
predisposing illness.
Trichosporon:
• Causative organism: T. cutaneum
• It can appear in patients who are
immunosuppressed.
