2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. IMAGINE DRAGONS-
BELIEVER
Make a story out of it- have someone one having a hard time in
life and then they pick themselves back up, at start show this
by using a dark color scheme such as black and grey
Story- have it about a boxer fighting his first heavyweight
match, show its his first time by utilizing colors and shadows
to make an effect
Make it more of a boy band- by throwing in more scenery clips
and having them all in one place and by changing the mood of
the song and the genre of the music by instead of it being a
rock change it to a pop song and add in different strobe effects

6. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
7. PREVAIL- SCARS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZzL4
jI60p4
They have used a close up as the camera angle this is to make the
audience engage with the song but also for them to focus in on
this actor this is due to the lyrics that he is saying as there are
important they want the audience to focus on this and they
manage to do it because of the camera angle
They utilize a long shot for there camera angle here this is to how
that they are all one group and there all together and that they are
all passionate about this song, as its about people suffering about
physical features furthermore they use a bright color scheme with
the lights this is to pull the audience into the product and make
them engage with it as it makes them listen to the lyrics
The producers keep using repetition through the camera angles as they
keep switching between a close up and a long shot the reason to why they
have used a long shot here is to show the audience the full picture as after
this clip the lyrics are “to hide our scars” we can see that they are trying to
show there opinion as people are suffering as throughout the video we see
individual people put masks on with the color scheme being dark and
8. KWABS- WALK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW9uj83
Vq-0 The producers have utilized a lot of repetition through color schemes and
camera angles we can see the color scheme is the same as the actor is
always wearing a orange shirt this is because the color orange symbolizes
success and joy and as this song is about taking a jump without worrying
about people to become successful, furthermore we see the use of
repetition through camera angles as the producer keeps switching
between long shots and close ups
In this clip they have utilized the color yellow after the phrase
“run a way” this is telling the audience that if they don’t jump
there not going to do it that’s why the actor is hiding his face as
he's trying to show the audience what will happen if they don’t
take the jump but we can see this with the long shot of the
camera as he is trying to hide from it
In this clip we can see that they are all different but with the same
purpose this is shown through the color scheme/ costume as they are all
wearing the same clothes but they have different colored coats but the
same color tops this conveys to the audience that they are the same on
the inside but different on the outside, the producers have done this to
illustrate to the audience that they all need to take the jump to get what
9. RAG N BONE- HUMAN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3wKzyI
N1yk
In this clip the producer has taken a long shot this is so the audience can
see the location and the environment that this was taken in they have done
it in this environment because of the main lyrics “I'm only human” because
of this majority of the population don’t have much so he's tried to match it
by using this place to convey this idea this is because they will try to get
everyone's attention on this product as behind the lyrics it basically says
anyone can get where he is now
As the audience we can see that the producer has tried to get everyone
involved in this even criminals and everyone as they have faded peoples
faces into the video and they get every race and gender in they have
clearly demonstrated this through the use of a close up camera angle, the
reason why they want everyone to see this could be because they want
everyone to live a better life and so it’s clear to the audience that
everyone can change and is the same
They have utilized a long shot to empathies what people go through and
why they want everyone to see it as some people are in the same
conditions as these people in the video, it is clear that they want people to
change as shown by the lyrics and images used in this music video as the
color scheme also shows this as throughout the video there are only dull
colors such as black and grey as this portrays to the audience the views of
10. SUB URBAN- CRADLES
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBtk5
FUeJbk
The producer has utilized a long shot for the camera angle this is so
the audience can see the full image this is to pull them into the
product and give them a bit of detail about tit such as the genre of the
video, also they have used props such as the cradle to make it seem
like the actor is trapped as there is fire spreading around him
In this scene the producer has used a long shot for the camera
angle this is to portray to the audience that the actor is isolated
this conveys to the audience now that the actor is all by himself
through his life as the audience keep getting annotations of a
baby to and adult as he's pushing around a pram when he's and
adult but then he's sitting in the cradle
In this clip the producer has used a long shot as the camera angle this
is to give the audience a full picture of the background for information,
the props used such as the buildings behind him show an escape from
reality the word “escape” is often this suggest to the audience that he
wants to escape reality, as in this video it could be about how the world
is bad as when people walk by him they have an animal/monster face
on them and then with the pram on fire which portrays life is being
11. MADNESS- OUR HOUSE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXuvde
EC5y8
The producers have utilized a close up shot for this scene and starts to zoom out into
a long shot the producers have done this to make the audience feel like this is a
normal person playing a guitar however when it zooms out the audience soon relies
that it’s more of a parody of the actor playing a guitar as he’s using a racket for it the
audience are shown that they are just a normal family due to the color scheme used
such as grey as this is a plain and dull color there's not much going on and this helps
the audience to focus on the actor and what he’s doing
Here the producer has done a close up on the group this is because they
want the audience to focus on the actors rather than what's happening
behind them the producer also helps the audience do this by using a
dull and plain color scheme throughout the clothes and the wallpaper
what the producers want people to see is the instruments this is so the
audience can identify the genre of the music and what to expect
In this shot a close up camera angle was used but really it’s a long shot in
ways as the producer doesn’t want the audience to look at the actor sat
down but the one behind the piano this is because the producer wants to
portray to the audience that this product is more for entertainment as
they have tried to make it funny through the use of the prop of the nose
that the actor is wearing this is to make the product more appealing for
12. POTENTIAL SONGS
•Madness- our house
•Imagine dragons- believer
•Eminem- Godzilla
•Michael Buble- Feeling Good
•Neffex- fight back
13. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
•Camera angles- close up, long shot, over shoulder, eagle
eye, pan/tilt, zoom, Dutch, maybe POV
•Premier pro- editing the clips and cutting them, key
frames, changing the speed, changing the lighting to
give a more dramatic effect
•After effects- adding in drawings maybe such as cradles
where lines come of,
•Photoshop- editing little details or if I use a green screen
and add in my own background, changing the contrast
and lighting of pictures/ props
14. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
•Mind map- bubbl.us
•Storyboard- to say what's going to happen when and the
camera angle
•Spider diagram-give me multiple ideas of how I can
approach a shot differently
16. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
•I have a lot of locations I can experiment with for each song for the
music video so I can create a different effect on the audience
•Each song has a unique way of changing the whole concept
through a music video I can do this by editing it through premier
pro o after effects
•I am able to have the lighting how I want it to be as two of my
ideas are to do with it being dark so I take a torch I can change the
angle of the shadow and when editing change the color contrast
•They all have different camera angles that I can experiment with as
one of them I can do an extreme close up with it and add different
effects with it also one of the music videos I can have a eagle eye
shot this helps the audience as it gives them some information
about where it’s set and why
•They all have a different color scheme as with our house I am using
bright colors I know that this will instantly grab the audiences
attention to the product due to it being eye catching whereas with
Godzilla I am using a dark color scheme so I will have to do
something to make it stand out to the audience this is a good
17. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
•One of my ideas is to shot a shot by a dark tunnel this is a
problem as there aren’t any tunnels in my area that I am
wanting this is because I will not be able to get the shots and
the scenery that I am wanting
•As majority of my ideas are outside I am at a disadvantage due
to the weather as if it rains I am unable to take shots due to my
camera isn’t waterproof and could damage it
•Getting some of the camera angles could be a problem
especially when I am trying to get an eagle eye shot as if it is
too windy I will not be able to get my drone in the air and this
will restrict me from getting a good shot that I am wanting to
get
•Also if the weather is bad it could be very difficult to get good
lip syncing as if I am playing the song it could be difficult to
hear it if it is windy I need to be able to hear the music so I can
get the right speed of the lyrics
•One of my ideas is pretending to play a instrument this could

Genre info
I think that these types of music videos are designed to grab
the audience’s attention to the product they have successfully
done this through the use of editing by getting numerous
objects to move in strange ways and by changing the pace of
the videos and more. They also use bright colors that you
wouldn’t often see in their videos as well.
19. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
In ”walk” by kwabs they have made a hip hop as this is
portrayed through the lyrics and the beat of the music, as
this is sort of what draws teens into the music as they have
drums, and they can relate to it through the fashion etc..
The pace of the song is relatively quick however it is
repetitive they have also made the duration of the song
quick this is done on purpose because it interests the
viewers more as it’s quick and doesn’t drag on the use of
the repetition is to make the audience remember the song
easier and to make it catchy for the audience, however in
some parts of the song they slow it down and then sped it
up this will interest the audience into the product as hen it’s
slow the audience listens to the lyrics more whereas when
it’s quick they listen to the beta of the music more.
Furthermore the content of the production is for teens and
young adults this doesn’t have a wide target audience as it
won’t appeal for the older audience due to the lyrics and

20. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation, use
of imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc.]
The song I'm going to be doing is ”walk” by kwabs for this I am going
to be having two actors and I will be using a repetition of camera
angles going between close up, long shot, and also a zoom/ pan. I will
be getting close up shots when the actors are playing an instrument or
when the leading actor is lip syncing a lyric, I will be using the long
shot to give the audience some information about where it is being
filmed and to show all the actors in one clip. I will be using the
pan/zoom to either get ready for a transition or another creative way to
show the whole group. The whole genre of the video that I will be
making will be a hip hop act like in the original I am not making a
parody but my own version of the song. Furthermore I will be using a
bright color scheme to get the audience interested in the product the
color scheme will help with this as it makes the product look more eye
catching and also I can put a hidden message in the video for example
when producers use blue it symbolizes depression and they play
around with these lighting effects to show someone mood or to give a
message of what’s happening. Lastly due to the genre of the music I
will be trying to wear clothes that I think are correct for this type of
music as it’s a hip hop I will be getting the actors to wear hoodies and
22. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
23. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Changing song to ”walk” kwabs
It’s going to be a about someone at rock bottom and
how they get to the top
The pace of the track is quick and sharp as the mood
reflects this as the artist is sad/ happy, also the tone is
serious and this grabs the audience’s attention to the
product
The hardware that I will need is a camera I will be
needing a tripod as well this will help make the shots
more professional and gives a better picture
The software I will need when making the product will be
premier pro and after effects this is to give of some of
the same effects like in the orignal
24. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
For one of the actors that I am using he will be needing
to get the train, I might need to get access into a gym for
some shots and for that I will need to get a bus there so
overall the price would be round £30 for this price
though I will be alright as it isn’t much and also if it
turns out I can’t get in I am able to do the shots outside
as there are places right next to it where I can still get a
good shot
The weather won’t effect my product much as I will be
shooting majority of my shots inside and the shots that I
will take outside I will want it to be raining and this isn’t
a problem due to the time of the year
25. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
I am fine for equipment the only thing that would be
helpful is a tripod for when I make a shot as this would
give me a better picture apart from that I am fine as I've
got all the software at home if college closes. For the
tripod that I need I will be borrowing it from college to
do this I will be going on the York college website and
booking it for the day that I need it for. Props I don’t
need the only thing I need to worry about is the tripod
and clothes as I am wanting the actors to look casual but
in hoodies to grab teens into the product.
26. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
When I editing my video it will either be at home or at
college I am able to do it all at home if college closes as
I've got all the software that I need and more. The only
thing that I might need for this product is a tripod or
something like that. the tripod would be to give my
filming better quality so it’s not shaking at all and it will
give a better effect. This would be very handy for me for
if I do a long shot or if I get a cinematic shot the camera
will be still whereas if I was to hold it the camera would
constantly be moving and it wouldn’t look as good.
27. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each team
members strengths/weaknesses? When are they available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are they
available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed them?
Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
I will be having only two actors in it they have both are/
have been in media themselves so they can help me out if I
need some ideas or even to improve on them. There main
strengths are that they are not camera frightened they don’t
get shy around it the only weakness is that one lives on the
other side of York and the other lives near Leeds.
Furthermore I don’t need any more actors I only need two
and that’s it this keeps the budget low and keeps it easier
for people to know what there doing. Also I have already
gotten in contact with the actors to see when they are
available and when is best to film with the weather as I
don’t need them both at the same time I am able to do one
day with one with filming there scenes and then the other
another day if there unavailable on the same days as they
are not in scenes together this makes it easier for me to as I
don’t need to concern myself with the risk of them getting
30. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
31. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
34. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
35. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
36. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
39. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
Name of actors Contact info roles
Ben McFadden Phone number boxer
Mathew Dickson Phone number Main lip sync
They are both media students / have been so if I get stuck with how to film
something they can help me put it right or if they have a better location then
me or a better idea I can improve on my work they are also not camera shy so
I know that I will get a good result with having them as my actors as they
know how things work. The only bad thing about it is where they live but also
that they are having to learn a new song as us three having different tastes in
music.
40. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
41. LOCATIONS
Piccadilly car park in York
I have checked and I don’t need permission to film here this one reason to
why I have chosen this location and also that if the weather is bad I can still
film as the equipment and the actors are inside. Because of the covid I only
need the lip syncing done which only one actor is needed, and the only
equipment I need Is a camera as there I have good scenery and lots of
opportunities there
Round trees park in fulford
I have chosen this location as there's a lot of free space and not many
people there however there is two places inside where I cannot film as I
haven't got permission but I am able to take shots outside this isn’t the
best as if it rains I'm a bit stuck however there is a bridge “millennium
bridge” where we can go if it’s raining and I will still be able to get the
scene that I am wanting. For this I will only need a camera and for the
props I will only need a bandage to pretend the boxer is wrapping his
Round trees park bridge
I have checked this place to see if I need permission to film here and I
don’t need it, I will be using this place as my main area for filming the
video as it’s a good location and if it rains I can get shots from
underneath the bridge as there's some good shots there as well as the
scenery would work very well for this video. Also the only equipment that
I will be needing is a camera and a tripod I don’t need any props for tis
video either which makes it easier to film and I can be creative with my
shots
42. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
43. RISK ASSESSMENT
risks How to avoid
Falling in river Stay away from edge and make sure
that it isn’t slippy
Being hit by car Film when no cars are about and
make sure if they are that you are out
of the way
Camera dying Take extra batteries
Tripping over branches or wires Make sure the path for actors is clear
and hide any wires that could be in
the way
Actors getting tired By giving them brakes every so often
and giving them water
Getting attacked by a swan Stay away from them and don’t feed
them
If it rains and the equipment gets wet To keep the equipment under cover
or to do it another day
44. CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimize the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organizational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
45. CONTINGENCY PLAN
problem contingency
Computer overheats Take regular breaks
Memory stick corrupts Back up work by sending to
yourself and saving multiple
copies
Monitor breaks Have a backup one or borrow
a friends or go somewhere
that has a spare monitor
Wire snaps Tuck and hide the wires under
the desks to avoid tripping
over
It’s thunder at the location Do the inside shots that day
then go back another time or
plan the locations around the
weather
Go away somewhere Make time in advance so you
don’t miss anything or do
shots early and then edit them
46. problem contingency
Actor cant do it I've got two more back
up actors if anything
goes wrong
Family member gets
corona
Ill have a backup plan for
a video at home as I
won’t be able to go out
lockdown Have a backup
storyboard to do at home
and make sure got
software to edit on
47. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when you’re filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
48. SCHEDULE
day task Time
(10hrs)
1 Film- first
minute
1.5hrs
2 Film-
second

Day 1- I will be getting footage from
Piccadilly car park first depending on the
weather as if it’s good I might go to round
trees, but here will be filming cinematics
and also my actor lip syncing the song
Day 2- I will be going to round trees bridge
to get the shot of my actor moving this is
to create a new scenery but also doing a
short film to go along the song this will
entertain the audience
Day 3- I will be filming the last bit of the
video for this I will be going to round trees
park to finish making the short film I will
be doing this in different places around the
park as there's forests and playing fields
and more
Day 4- I will be either at college or home
putting the videos together and then
editing them through premier pro, after
effects, and Photoshop, and also fitting the
song and the video together
Day 5- I will be using this time for
contingency time so if something goes
49. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here
