2. Bauer Media Group
• Bauer is a multi-media company who feature 107 brands from magazines, TV,
radio and digital devices. The style that they use is quite modern and young as
they state on their website that their target audience is “millennials” thus it
would appeal to them. Their website also states that their strongest audience
consists of 16-34 year olds. Their magazines revolve mostly around outdoors
activities and vehicles. I believe that this company is a mix of mainstream and
niche magazines from the fact that one of their magazines is a women’s gossip
magazine titled “yours” while another there is another magazine titled “steam
railway” focuses on steam rail trains. Bauer media produces magazines for a
range of audiences, for example there is a magazine called “mother & baby”
which would be aimed for mothers but in contrast there is a magazine called
“Herring” which states it is a “youth culture brand”. There is also a magazine
brand called “improve your coarse fishing” which is directed more too middle-
aged and older men. The magazine brand Kerrang also has other productions
such as Kerrang radio and Kerrang TV.
3. Time Inc.
• Time Inc. is an American magazine publishing company which owns over 60
brands of magazines. This publishing company has a more formal approach
as their website has a more straight-forward design with less colour. The
magazines produces are a mix of mainstream and niche topics as one
magazine titled “goodtoknow” is a women’s lifestyle magazine which
focuses on catering while there is a magazine brands called “shooting uk”
which is targeted to those who are into the sport of hunting. I believe that
their target audience is a mix of male and female adults in their late 30s.
This is because one of their magazine brands “women weekly” is a self-help
women’s magazine whereas the opposing brand “rugby-world” is a men’s
rugby magazine. Their brand image is that they are a formal and
sophisticated publishing company.
4. Wire
• The wire is an independent British music magazine publisher. Their style of.
They feature a mass-range of music genres including somewhat
mainstream and niche music. This can be beneficial to them as it allows
them to reach a wide range of people thus grab the attention of both big
and small crowds. I believe that the target audience for this will be 28-45
year old adult men and women. This is because one of their latest
magazine the central image is of an 81 year old English folk singer Shirley
Collins who was popular in the 70s. Another reason would be the design of
their magazines: they use a very basic font for their title block and there
are hardly a lot of magazine conventions on there, with little to no buzz
words making this magazine and the publishing company itself very formal
and straight forward.
