1. Focus Group Analysis
I carried out my focus group in order to find out more about target audience. This was
helpful because I got a live response from representatives of my target audience. I
asked them a range of questions that would help me in the making of my tasks.
Question One:
My first question was “Which magazine front cover do you prefer and why?” Both girls
chose the magazine on the left- the Top of the Pops magazine. They chose that one
because they thought it was more colourful and stood out more. This lets me know that
my magazine should look similar to the Top of the Pops magazine, with bright colours.
This shows that I should stick with the conventions of music magazines, as these are
successful in drawing in and keeping an audience, so my magazine will be successful
too.
Question Two:
In the second question, I asked them which colours they would like to see on a
magazine. They chose blue, pink and purple because they were bright. Ellen said
purple and pink were her favourite colours. I know I should use these colours in my
designs to draw in my target audience. I expected these answers as they are typical
colours that are used in pop music magazines, and are generally liked by my target
audience.
Question Three:
My third question was “What type of article would you like to see and why?” Ellen said
she’d like interviews because you get the celebrities’ opinion on different topics. Amy
said she’d like to see information on new music because she like music and would like
to know if there is anything new coming out. This gives me a good idea of some of the
sell lines I should use to draw in the audience and make them want to buy my
magazine.
Question Four:
For my fourth question I gave them pictures of three celebrities and they had to choose
one that they would like to see in a magazine. Ellen chose one direction, because they
were her favourite singers, while Amy chose Ariana Grande. I know I should include
pictures of artists with similar styles to them, as they will be successful in attracting my
audience’s attention. This response fulfilled my expectations as I know these celebrities
often feature in existing pop magazines, so they must be successful in drawing in the
target audience.
2. Question Five:
For my last question, I asked them what sort of free prizes they would like to get in a
magazine. They both chose posters, because they thought that things like nail polishes
and make-up sets could break easily. This shows that I should definitely include posters
as a free gift in my magazine. I did not expect this answer as many pop magazines
include cover mount like nail polishes, and I expected the target audience to enjoy
getting them.
