1. Focus group analysis
In order to find out more about my target audience, I got two
representatives to view a PowerPoint and answer questions
related to pop magazines, and some personal questions in
order for me to get to know my audience more, and find out
what would attract them to buying a new magazine.
The first question I asked was 'what do you like doing in your
free time?'. The answers I got were dancing, singing, and going
to air cadets. I asked this question so I could give my
representatives a 'friend to friend' feel to the chat, and to simply
find out what my target audience like doing. This question
helped to create a relaxed tone, and put my representatives at
ease.
I then asked 'who are your favourite artists in the pop genre?';
this question helped me to find out what artists are most
popular, so I would know who to include in my magazine. Both
representatives said they like boy bands, One Direction and
5SOS. This shows that boy bands are dominant in pop
magazines, and most girls of the young age like them.
The third question asked was 'what content would you like to
read in a pop magazine?'. Answers 'interviews' and 'gossip'
were given. This helped me in my research and planning
because I know which sell-lines to use, and it helped me to
decide the double page spread should be an interview. This
tells me that the target audience like getting personal with their
favourite artists because they want to read interviews.
My participants were then shown two images of pop magazine
front covers and asked them which ones they preferred and
why. One of them said they preferred the one with One
Direction on, and one said they preferred the one with Taylor
Swift. Because this was mixed, it didn't help me much with my
planning, but I decided to go with a female artist on the front
2. cover as this allows my target audience to have someone they
can look up to.
Next, I asked 'what artists would attract you most to buying a
boy band?' and they were asked to choose between 'girl band',
'boy band', 'male artist' and 'female artist'. Results were split
between boy band and girl artist. I decided to have the main
artist as a female as the results of my questionnaire showed
that most of the target audience listen to female artists.
Two pictures of contents pages were shown to my
representatives, and they were asked which one they prefer.
Although the representatives said different contents pages,
they said they liked them spaced out and bigger so I took this
feedback and designed my mocks up to look like a mixture of
both.
To find out about my audience, I asked what there favourite
colours were; they answered red, blue, pink and purple. A
follow up question of this asked my representatives, 'what
colours would attract you most to a front cover?', and they said
bright colours such as pink and yellow. This was successful
because pink and yellow are colours that are conventional on
pop magazines; I decided to use these colours on my
magazine. This shows that the target audience are attracted by
bright colours that will stand out from other magazines on the
shop shelves.
I then explained to my representatives what a double page
spread was as they are young and may be unsure of this
terminology. I then showed them two different double page
spreads and asked them which layout they preferred and why.
Both of the representatives said they prefer interviews as you
get to find out what the celebrity really thinks on certain things;
this helped me decide that my double page spread should be
an interview.
3. Overall, this focus group was successful as I found out more
about my target audience and got to know what they would like
to see in a new pop magazine. However, for this focus group to
have been more beneficial, more representatives could have
been included.
