2. Ultra VW Front
Cover. This front cover has a very strict color scheme and everything
works together. You can see how the colors of the text works
around the actual paint jobs of the cars. You have the Green that
matches the Beetle in the bottom left of the page and then you
also have the white to compliment the T2 Bay Window in the top
right hand corner. And although you don’t have any blue to work
with the Retro Beetle in the foreground of the page, the white
works well with it and makes the color pop even more. The actual
design of this page has been worked around the color scheme
flowing. The MK1 Golf that is off to the left could have easily been
bigger, but because of the black paint job it would’ve affected the
way the pages color worked, white does contrast well with black
but then white become the dominant color and takes away from
the black car. So the wiser thing to do is included in on the page
but not make it the focus of the page to stay consistent with the
idea of color flow.
Not only does the color scheme work with the page but the actual
composition of the images emphasizes the cars even more. If you
look at the roof of the Blue Beetle you can see the dotted line runs
behind it, also the same goes for the title ‘Late Lust’. This goes a
long way in showing the reader that the beetle should take the
foreground and be the focus of attention. This was done by making
sure to photograph the cars with carful composition. So pre
planning my magazine will be a really important step to make sure
that when I go out and take the photos of my car I can visualize the
way the text will form around my car and make sure I take photos
that will actually be useful.
In terms of appeal to the audience this magazine looks to be one
that focuses on restoration projects or extremely clean looking
cars. The title fonts and layout of the front cover are also in turn
extremely clean looking. Which further attracts the audience that
love the look of a clean, shiny car. If this magazine was a Ratted
Style focus then maybe it would benefit from looking rough, but it
certainly looks a lot better as it does now.
4. Ultra VW – Double Page Spread
Analyzed.
This double page spread is focused around the Blue Beetle we saw in the foreground of the front cover. Again
the design of the page looks like it is molded around the car. Everything is designed to fit in with the colors and
the look of the car it self. I really like the look of the extra photos included. Its not just one big photo of the Bug
that leaves the readers wanting more, it has lots of smaller more interesting photos surrounding the article
about the car. Because I am using a website called Issuu to look at these magazines I cant read the full article
but this page continues onto another double page spread. Because of this I may need to reconsider if I should
use just one double page spread or two for my main feature car. If I were to just use one I could fill it full of
detail but maybe cram the page with too much information. On the other hand two double page spreads might
be too much for just one car and it might leave the readers bored. I will ask a question in my survey to see
which is more desirable for my audience.
In contrast the the front cover this double page spread is something that has quite a neutral palate of colors.
But it is made up for in the photos of the Beetle with the bright blue. The neutral white again contrasts well
with the blue, but also works well against the black font. Also the choice of using a light brown for the pull
quotes and the title reflection was a good choice. It saves the overuse of black text but still makes it easy to
look at and read.
The reflection in the title was done to look just like the shine on the car. The car has an insane reflection
because of the amount of car and detail that’s gone into looking after the paint. The title shows this by using a
reflection effect.
The reader will be pulled into this double page spread because of the main focus of this car on the front page,
if you were just scanning over the magazine display in the shop you will be pulled into this magazine because of
the amazing bright blue beetle on the cover. You see the car on the front cover and are then more enticed to
read the full page about the Beetle.
5. Volks World Issue
One – Front Cover.
This is the front cover of the first issue of VolksWorld. This issue was
first released in 1987. Which explain the bright colors and lack of
ground breaking design. If you look at the actual composition of the
cover, unlike the last magazine I researched, this one is incredibly
simple. Made up of just squares and a few rectangles. But issue one of
this magazine was released in a time when there wasn’t much
competition in the world of VW Magazines. So a simple cover with a
few pictures of VW’s would’ve sold no matter what. But I do not think
this design was made due to a lack of effort from the art designers, but
more due to a lack of actual programs and products to use that would
create a ground breaking magazine.
Not only does the shape and composition of the magazine scream old
school but the color scheme also reminds me of the 80’s and 90’s.
With a color scheme like this I feel that this magazine would still sell to
this day, the VW scene has been around for an incredibly long time. So
releasing a magazine like this today will fill the long time enthusiast
with nostalgia, I will ask in my survey if my audience would prefer
something old school or something new.
The logo of Volks World is still used on todays issues of Volks World
but has been changed to keep up with
the times . You can see the old font was
small and slightly squashed but this new
one works really well with the fresh
color scheme that comes with it. You can
clearly see that the new logo has evolved from the classic one from the
first issue. I would like to create something similar for my magazine,
something that is easy to recreate. Nothing over the top complicated.
Which in turn requires a easy to say title that will also appeal the the
VW scene. When I create my survey I will think of lots of names and
then ask my audience to pick the most favorable one.
8. Volks World Issue 1 – Double Page
Spread Analysed.
This double page spread, similar to the front cover, just screams old school. The off tilt
squares that back the photos might not work very well in theory. But seeing them in the
magazine all together I can see that it works. Also again with the color scheme, the colors
that have been chosen to back the photos match the photo in some way. Like the blue
beetle placed in the middle left has a blue square behind it to back the picture. And even
though it doesn’t work incredibly well, it works better then leaving the photo to be backed
with white. The second page of the double page spread also does this. Again similar to the
front cover of the magazine this spread fills the older people of the VW scene with nostalgia,
I will ask in my survey if I should create something that reflects the modern VW magazine or
create something that looks similar to the older magazines.
9. VW Magazine
Photography.
When a photographer is tasked with taking photos of a
car for a magazine, they must consider a lot of different
options when they are shooting. The whole
composition of the front cover or double page spread
needs to be considered when taking the photos. The
actual composition is questionable the most important
part of the front cover. I will think about every photo
before I take it and make sure I have thought about the
surrounding text and the way I will compose
everything.
10. Research Analysis
The products I have researched both fall into the
category of being VW Car magazines. I decided to look
at both a modern car magazine and also a classic one.
They both reflect the same community and aspects that
surround the VW Scene. But the difference in time
periods
In my final product I would like to include different
aspects from both magazines. I love the simple style of
the vintage magazine but I feel like it wont really test me
in terms of skills. I feel if I wanted an easy option I could
create a vintage style magazine. But because this is my
final piece I want to test my self and push my self to
create something new and interesting.
