Learning Aim A
Print - The dominant image is a close up of Pennywise
and the signature red balloon which is staring at
the audience in a creepy way as if he would in the
film. The way that they have used the dominant
image also appeals to the typical target audience
of horror/sci-fi. The dominant image also has a
dark colour theme about it which suits the genre.
Fans of the horror genre would automatically
recognise the dominant image and may appeal
to them to buy the magazine.
- The masthead, main sell line, skyline and
tagline all utilise the red balloon so that they
stand out from the page and be very noticeable
to the target audience.
-The masthead uses a bright yellow so that it
stands out from the dark red balloon. Therefore
standing out to the audience.
The tagline is also in a bright yellow as it is the
magazines slogan so they want that to stand out
and be obvious to the audience
- The skyline includes a little bit of information
about another sci-fi which is following the codes
of convention of the genre. However it is in a red
that is similar to the balloon as it isn’t a main
story so they do not need to do be as dominant
and only serves a purpose of letting the reader
know that it is in the magazine.
- The main sell line “Pennywise Lives” will attract
fans of the movie franchise since it is written in a
large white font which stands out against the red
balloon. Since this is the main sell line, they want
it to be the most obvious piece of text on the
page.
- This magazine includes two plugs. The first one
includes a sub-image about another new movie
and the other does not include a sub-image
however does include a well-known logo.The use
of the logo appeals to the fans of marvel
therefore attracting more of a target audience
- This cover also features a pull quote which is
typically on a double page spread but they have
used it on the front cover to emphasize the main
story.
- This magazine includes a lot of other sell
lines/cover lines on the main cover. ScifiNow
may have done this so that it interests the target
audience more. The target audience may be
discouraged to buy the magazine if they only see
information about the film IT however by
including more sell lines then the audience may
be more inclined to purchase.
- The barcode is the most essential part of the
magazine and it is located in the bottom middle
of the page. The barcode also include the price
and the URL to the website. Although we know
that this is a print magazine, the barcode helps
differentiate between print and digital
PrintThe purpose of this magazine is to
provide information and entertainment
to people who are interested in the
genre film, more specifically, sci-
fi/horror films. This magazine also
provides images and information that
hasn’t been released any where before
around new and upcoming movies so
this can excite fans and get people
talking about it. This is effective
because it can help promote the film
since people will be talking about it with
their friends or anyone within their
community.
The target audience for this magazine
are typically aged from 16 to 45 and
and for the gender that it is targeted to,
it is gender neutral. The social grade
that this is targeted for would probably
be around C1 and C2 however mainly
C1. This is because C1 has the highest
population percentage overall so that
means that the magazine is more likely
to be purchased by them. C1 also
includes people with professional jobs
so the audience can afford to pick up
this magazine and may even purchase
it as entertainment whilst they are on a
break while at work.
This magazine, like many other print
magazines, would typically be
distributed through supermarkets and
newsagents. There are also websites
online that you can subscribe to and get
print magazines delivered to your home
that is another way that this magazine
may be distributed. Some people may
choose to purchase magazines this way
since not all stores may have the
magazine that you are looking for.
Print
This double page spread’s folio is located at the
bottom of the page. This includes the page number,
masthead/title and the magazine website. Every
page in the magazine should feature this
The page has two
headlines, the first one is
telling the audience that
this is the cover feature
(the story on the front
cover) and the second one
which is the actual story.
This just so the reader
knows that they are in the
right place for the main
story.
The dominant image of this
double page is a behind the
scenes photo of the director
speaking to the main cast.
This will appeal to the
audience because if fans
are really interested in the
movie and the creation of it,
they will like to see what it
was like behind the scenes.
This sort of image also
makes the reader feel like
they are a part of the set
and can feel a connection
within the production.
This double page
spread consists of pull
quotes from an
interview with the
director of the
IT: Chapter 2 movie. In
the text in the top left of
the page, the text is a
Q&A between a reporter
and the cast of the
movie.Only two of the four
images feature a caption.
The caption give the
reader some context to
whats happening in the
image.
The images and text is
presented in a organised
and neat way. This makes it
easier for the reader to
understand what is going
on. This also makes the
reader more comfortable
when reading it therefore
creating a pleasant reading
experience.
There are multiple small images from
some key moments in the movie
which is used to excite the audience.
Digital
- The skyline is featuring the title of another
new movie that will attract more people since it
is a hugely anticipated film. This is in a white
font which gives it a strong contrast against the
red dominant image. The second half of the
skyline "in hollywood" is in a gold font which can
infer that the film is produced in a hollywood
studio and therefore going to be good.
- The dominant image is a medium close-up of
Pennywise the clown staring at the audience
hiding behind five balloons. The whole thing also
has a red shade to it which can resemble
danger/blood since it is a horror film and those
are both key elements of a horror film.
- The masthead is in a large, bold and
white font which makes it stand out from
the red dominant image. The white againt
the red creates a very strong contrast and
sort of glares into the readers face
- This magazine features two different
taglines. They do this to solidify that their
magazine is the most professional and
trusted out there.
- The main sell line 'World Exclusive IT Chapter
Two' will attract the target audience since they
will think that the story is exclusive toTotal Film.
The main sell line is also inside of a gold box
which also infers that this is a good article.
-This magazine features only one plug.
The plug follows the colour scheme with
the red, white and black. Total Film has
highlighted the title of the movie in the
plug in a red colour and it fits perfectly
because the movie that it is advertising is
called 'Rambo: Last Blood' and the red
links to blood.
-This magazine also uses a pull quote to
emphasis the main sell line. A pull quote can
also make the reader think into the pull quote
since it is coming from someone who has seen
the film
-The sub head 'On Set with Pennywise"
Will attract fans because most fans would
like to see and know what it is like behind
the scenes and on the set. This too is in a
golden font and links with the other
golden features of this page.
This front cover includes many other sell
lines but they use big names that are in
the film industry to catch the eyes of the
audience.
The purpose of this magazine is just like
the other one. It is to provide information
and entertainment to people that are fans
of the film genre, and since the magazine
appeals to fans of film it is about the film
genre.
For distribution of this digital magazine, it
is only distributed on subscription based
services or pay to view. There are many
ways for audiences to find digital
magazines as many different websites
offer them like Amazon. However digital
copies of magazines aren’t as popular as
print since a lot of people prefer to have a
physical copy.
The target audience for this magazine is
also aged around 15-45 since it is also a
horror film magazine and it is also
gender neutral. The social grade is also in
between C1 and C2 but more towards C1
since it has the highest population
percentage in it.
Digital
Digital
- This page uses a drop
cap at the start of one of
the paragraphs. It is used
so that the reader knows
where to start reading
from. This can be helpful
when there is a lot of text
beside each other. It is
also in a different colour
than the rest of the text
therefore it stands out as
the start of the article.
- The headline of this
page is in a bold font so
that it stands out to the
readers. It is in a black
font which is great for a
contrast against the white
background
- This pages folio Is located on the bottom of the page.
This includes the magazine website, magazine name,
masthead and the date that it was published.
- The caption for
the dominant image
over laps the
dominant image.
Having it on top of
the dominant image
saves space on the
page for more
important
Information.
-The use of the
dominant image is
very eye catching
for the audience
since it is full of
colour whereas the
rest of the page is
black and white
-The strap line talks
about the director of
Once Upon a Time in
Hollywood. Fans of this
director will want to
read on about him.
-This page has many
sub heads around
the page and they
are all in a bold font
right above the text
it is for.
Pros and cons of Print
The first pro of a print magazine is that they are more likely to be purchased by their target audience since the distribution is more likely to be seen in supermarkets
and newsagents. They are also easy shared around by friends and family since it is in a physical form therefore reaching more of an audience. Another pro of a print
magazine is that the reader can have a more comfortable and leisurely experience since they can sit down comfortably at home instead of sitting at a computer and
getting intruded from online advertisements. Print magazines can also provide a more memorable experience since it is in physical form whereas a digital they can
easily scroll past sections. Print magazines can always reach the target audience since they do not require an internet connection.
The first con of a print magazine is that they cost the publisher more money to make and then they also run the risk of not selling some copies so then they’re at a
loss of profit. Also, since the online world is growing so fast, more and more people are starting to use the internet and then they may choose to purchase a digital
magazine since it may be more convenient for them to do so.
Pros and cons of Digital
The first pro of a digital magazine is that it is even easier to share the magazine around than a print magazine since it is online and can be sent anywhere around the
world at anytime. This can create a discussion between online communities therefore reaching more of the magazines target audience. Digital magazines are a lot
cheaper to produce than a print since they don’t go through the process of having to be printed therefore saving the publisher money and they can also generate
more revenue with online advertisements. Also, since the magazine is digital, the person who has purchased the magazine can access the magazine wherever they if
they have it downloaded to their mobile phones.
The first con of a digital magazine is that a lot of jobs are lost since they do not require workers to work on the printing process of the magazine. Also the audience
must have an internet connection to access the magazine however more and more people are starting to use it.Another con is that the reader may not have enjoy
the reading experience since some online advertisements are very intruding and can get it the way sometimes.
Pros and cons
Technical Considerations
Print
There are many technical considerations that need to be considered within the distribution of a print magazine. Print magazines
specifically since they cost more to produce so they have less room for error. They must ensure that they’re printing in A4 or A5
since it is industry standard and they must consider the fonts that would fit best with the genre of the magazine and the target
audience. They must ensure that they include a bleedline so that when they do print, none of the images or text is cut off from
the side of the page. They also must use gutter lines so that it is easier for the readers to understand the layout of a page.
Digital
There are also many technical considerations that need to be considered within the distribution of a digital magazine. The first
thing that the publishers must consider is what apps support digital magazines since not all apps do support them. This may
cause problems like the reader not being able to see the whole page and images/text out of place, sometimes the colours and
fonts may not translate into digital leading to it not having the same impact on the reader. This could also make the reader
frustrated and then they may be put off from purchasing again. The publisher will also have to plan out how the reader will
navigate the digital magazine, this includes; how they will move through the magazine, skip pages if they want and how video
and audio files will load and be displayed.

  • 9. Technical Considerations Print There are many technical considerations that need to be considered within the distribution of a print magazine. Print magazines specifically since they cost more to produce so they have less room for error. They must ensure that they’re printing in A4 or A5 since it is industry standard and they must consider the fonts that would fit best with the genre of the magazine and the target audience. They must ensure that they include a bleedline so that when they do print, none of the images or text is cut off from the side of the page. They also must use gutter lines so that it is easier for the readers to understand the layout of a page. Digital There are also many technical considerations that need to be considered within the distribution of a digital magazine. The first thing that the publishers must consider is what apps support digital magazines since not all apps do support them. This may cause problems like the reader not being able to see the whole page and images/text out of place, sometimes the colours and fonts may not translate into digital leading to it not having the same impact on the reader. This could also make the reader frustrated and then they may be put off from purchasing again. The publisher will also have to plan out how the reader will navigate the digital magazine, this includes; how they will move through the magazine, skip pages if they want and how video and audio files will load and be displayed.
