Audience Profile
Autosport magazine is a good example of a certain
subject done well. The producing company:
Autosport, usually delves into 2 subjects. The first
is Formula 1, and as you can see in this copy, they
devote an entire magazine to it. The other subject
they go into is racing as a whole. What you can see
in this example is a good look into the future of f1,
clearly in bold titles and font.
3. Front coverAs the front cover for a magazine, Autosport do a good job of enticing the reader to open the front page and
continue to read the stories on the front cover.
The first thing you notice on the cover of a magazine, is the layout. Its usually broken into different sections. The
masthead, cover lines, images on the page along with enticing questions.
As a defined magazine, Autosport need to boldly display their name so that readers can easily notice their
magazine from a competitor. This can be seen on this page, with white text in front of a red background along
with their noticeable logo. Bold, bright and easily distinguishable from other magazines it will be sat next too in a
store.
The next thing to note is the cover lines. This is the big comment underneath the title. Autosport entices the
reader with “F1 2020 REVEALED” First off, the cover line is in bold. The writers want this to be the next thing the
reader reads after the title. Next is the fact that “F1 2020” is in a red colour, similar to the banner behind the
title. Its bright and is a significant comment for an F1 fan to see. So to have it in bold for them to see clearly, is a
good strategy for Autosport to take so that they entice the reader to continue buying their magazine.
The colour scheme of the front cover is one of red, white and black. Any cover with a colour along with mainly
black and white are good at structuring their magazine. They have enough colours on the front cover to split up
subjects but not too many colours so that the magazine looks ‘tacky.’
The main image on the page is the new F1 2021 car which has just been released to the public. Big new for any
F1 fan, and Autosport know this. They have a large image of the new car on the front cover of the magazine so
that the reader will easily see it. The car features the livery made by Autosport themselves.
Enticing comments is another thing that magazines need to do so that they entice the reader to open up their
magazine to see more content. Open ended comments like: “what you need to know about the new season” and
“can anyone stop Cadillac in the 24 hours?” These questions are rhetorical for the reader, and they suggest that
they will be answered inside. The mode of address to the reader is one of questioning and informing. The open
ended questions are there to keep the reader there and encourage them to open the magazine.
One more thing to entice the reader to open the magazine is the extra content. And in this case it’s the “WRC
preview” which is highlighted by a green circle. Green is opposite on the colour spectrum compared to red, so it
will stand out from the rest of the image.
The audience of Autosport magazine are also fans of Formula 1 and other racing series. Autosport as a racing
magazine sound reference the different series. The interesting thing to note from any magazine is the fact that
their audience is always different. Each respective magazine has to design them based on their audience.
Autosport have done a fantastic job at aiming to the mainly male audience. however, there is a small minority of
female audience. The audience in general are above the age of 16, this is because racing as a sport is rather
confusing and uninteresting. It would have to appeal to the older generation by having a well thoughtout and
structured magazine.

Audience Profile
Genius is a magazine allowing the artists to
explain their lyrics of their songs. Genius also
updates their readers of other events that occur
in the music industry. In this example,
XXXTentacion, a large artist at the time (and still
is) died at the age of 20. a very significant title
for any magazine.
5. Double page spread
A double page spread is a great way to entertain any reader. In this case, it includes a screenshot of a well known music video called
”This is America” by Childish Gambino. The lyrics of this song are rather confusing for the listener. And with is large page displaying
the music video, and the next few pages devoted to explain the song, the reader should have a better understanding of what the
lyrics mean. Hopefully after reading the magazine readers will want to continue to find out more about the artists and pick up more
magazines to find out more information from other artists. The interesting thing about any music magazine, is that the audience is
very dynamic. Each artist and their respective songs have their own genre and style. Genius as a music magazine tends to stick
towards more unique and viral songs. Along with raps done by larger artists. Artists like: JID, Childish Gambino, Logic Etc. but as a
whole, music magazines have a broad and changing audience depending on what music they look into.
As a double page spread, genius did a fantastic job at enticing the reader. With a large
screenshot of Childing Gambino’s music video: “This is America.” any reader who has
watched this music video, or has listened to the song itself will understand that the
lyrics are rather confusing and cryptic. Genius understands this and on the right side
of the page (as a little extra content on the page) Genius references the fact that their
readers really enjoyed their last issue on this song. So they decide to continue the
research and give one more article about it.
The structure of the double page slide for any magazine is relatively similar. With a
large image alongside a sample of text describing the subject of the image. Genius
stuck to this trend by displaying the music video, and explaining “the song and its
themes.” a very interesting and enticing comment that Genius used to keep the reader
stuck to their magazine.
The page itself is 3 consistent colours. The main featured colour is Yellow. And its
completed by a white background with black text. They have used this colour scheme
because the colours used in Genius videos on YouTube (their most prominent social
media). This double page spread will look similar to their YouTube content.
Another thing this magazine has in common with the YouTube content, is the same
font seen on this double page spread. Its simple for the readers recognize and read.
In general, the structure of the page is consistent with their YouTube channel, where
they have used the same. Colours, text and image layout as the YouTube channel.

Railway Magazine is all about collecting and making
model trains. The magazine’s audience is very similar
to ones found in the image on the bottom right. An
older generation who miss the old government
funded railway. To comfort their nostalgia, they can
recreate any railway they want with any train and any
layout. So in conclusion, the majority of the audience
are mainly males over the age of 40. readers can also
be up to the age of around 80. I myself have seen
railway collectors who are of age.
7. Magazine as a whole
b
every magazine should follow a a certain theme. When it comes to colours, font, text layout, images etc. from the 2 images,
I can link many things that have similarities and themes. And some differences.
the first thing to note are the images on the front cover and the double page spread. The subject and the theme is
incredibly similar. A top down angled shot of trains on a track. The subject of the magazine is about model trains. Things like
creation, models and techniques that people can use are all found within this magazine. The front page of the magazine has
a lot more images as compared to the first 2 researched magazines. It's more of a collage of images, all displaying different
subjects within model railways. Which should entice the reader into opening up the magazine and finding out more
information on model railways and trains.
The main thing to note about the front cover and the double page spread, is the
similarity and differences in the texts. Whereas the front page has many verities of
images on the front. The double page spread only has one large image. By having the
front page full of images, they are displaying the different subjects that they are going
delve into when you open the magazine. The different subjects will delve into and
appeal to different audiences. This is because the different subjects will delve into
different content.
As a whole, the front cover of Railway Magazine does an excellent job of appealing to
different audiences. With many different images of products and activities which
appeals to a wide range of different readers of the magazine. This inclusivity of
readers should really attract many different people to read the magazine.
There should be 2 different audiences who read the magazine. A primary and
secondary audience. The primary audience of the magazine should be the readers
who the magazine is aimed at. This will be people who buy the magazine for the
model railways, either builders or enthusiasts. The secondary audience would include
people who are not railway enthusiasts but are still interested in railway modeling.
This means the magazine should spread out the verity of subjects to do with model
railway building, which is exactly what the front cover did with its many images on the
front cover.
Last of all, is the colours used on the magazine. You will find many yellows and greens
filling up the page. These are colours linked to nature and most of all trains. An inviting
colour scheme for a railway enthusiast.
8. Research Analysis
Each magazine has a banner with a title located on
the front cover.
Each magazine has its own respective colour
scheme, depending on the subject and the
audience.
I must include the fact that each magazine has its
own colour scheme depending on what its
featuring.
Finding a specific audience is key when it comes to
designing a front cover of a magazine. So I will have
to make sure I aim at the right audience.
