The document discusses editing techniques used in a music video project. It describes using fades between clips to show the passage of time as the song is slow and steady. Straight cuts were only used for obvious beats. Slow motion was used to fit the pace of the song and enhance sadness. Black and white filters were applied to distinguish past and present relationships and convey sadness, while other filters made the video more interesting than natural lighting alone.
2. Transitions and fades
Within our song, we wanted to use fades to show the passing
of time and also we wanted it to match the song. As the song
is fairly slow and steady, we thought using straight cuts all
the time would be too much and wouldn’t match the song at
all and it wouldn’t give the effect we want it to give.
Although we used straight cuts where there is an obvious
beat and louder than the rest of the song as we thought it
would look much better and in time however apart from
that we used fades elsewhere to flow with the song better.
3. Changed opacity with shots
As we were asked to use one shot which is
different and unique and clever, we
decided to merge two shots into one by
changing the opacity of them. We thought
an argument would be suitable as it shows
how their relationship was in the past and
how they aren’t together now as they fade
out towards the end.
4. Slow-mo
A few of our shots in our music video are in slow
motion and this is because we wanted it to fit the
speed of the song more and make the sadness more
effective. For example, when Molly and Will are at the
pub outside and the last shot of her laughing we put in
slow-mo to make it more effective and to enhance the
fact she is happier with someone else.
5. Filters
We decided to use black and white filters in our music
video to establish the past relationship (Tom and Molly)
and present relationship (Will and Molly). We also wanted
to use filters to enhance the sadness of the song and also
the footage so it becomes more effective for the audience
when watching it. We also used a filter called ‘epic’ to make
the video more interesting and so we aren’t just using
natural lighting as we thought it would quite unrealistic.
