In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
1.
2. Music Video
• The genre we decided on was indie music which meant that we could
get a lot of different ideas for our music video and print products. We
searched up different type of indie music and videos that had similar
style such as Lana Del Rey- Summertime sadness, Taylor Swift – We
are never ever getting back together and Katy Perry – Part of me.
When evaluating the different music videos I wanted to see the
different editing techniques they used and shots. We learnt that indie
music videos were mainly about lip-syncing and the scene being
shown.
3. • Our music video was based around a girl who gets her
heartbroken, this shown through the lyrics of the song
we chose and also through the music video. We used the
character to portray the feelings through the lyrics and
editing of the video. We wanted a relation between the
lyrics and what was presented through the music video
e.g. The character in our music video is a wolf and this is
shown through the lyrics “if you could only see the beast
you made of me..” so we made our character represent
the wolf through the change of her emotions and her
becoming into a beast.
4. • Taylor Swift – We are never ever getting
back together has a similar story line but
the camera shots are different because of
where it is shot. But however with both our
music video and this music video you have
both guys trying to stop the girl from
leaving but she leaves showing that she is
leaving the relationship.
We thought using the flashback would be
effective because it could show the
audience where it all began and a clearer
understanding of the storyline. The
flashback was used at the beginning which
is more effective because it lets the
audience follow with the story of how the
character reached that state. To make sure
the audience understood it was a flashback
we put a blurry effective to it. We decided
to only show the main character, blurred
out the male character to give him a more
mysterious look and also because it is
based more around the female character.
5. Costume
• The costume that we
decided on was mainly
inspired by Florence +
The Machine because she
had the unique indie style
which we was aiming to
go for. The two costumes
that was decided on was
a black laced dress and
also a white laced dress.
The white to reflect the
emotions of her at the
beginning then the black
to represent the change
of her emotions which
was shown through the
costume.
6. Camera
• The main angles we used throughout our music video was the close up and medium shot.
Godwin’s theory says that close ups should be in music videos of the artist. The reason we
used close ups was to show the audience the emotions of the character. The close up let the
audience understand the emotions going through the character because of the shots of
artist instead it being long shot or medium constantly. Katy Perry – Part of me have a lot of
close up which shows the emotions of the artist. We also used establishing shots so it could
show the audience where the music video was shot instead of only showing the character.
7. Location
• The location we decided to
film our music video is a
forest. We was inspired by
Florence + The Machine –
Cosmic love. We wanted to
continue the indie theme
throughout because most
indie music video have a
mysterious and nature theme.
8. Editing
• When editing the music video the beginning was a slow tempo and
toward the end the temp starts to speed up. The editing of the
video was in sync with everything else. The tempo increasing means
it engages the audience more and this was inspired by Florence +
The Machine because of the fast cutting rate.
9. Effects
• At the beginning of our music
video we filmed the sky and the
trees and we added a video filter
which was called echo to give it
that mysterious outlook. It shows
the point of view of the character
and showing the audience the
emotions, the changing into a
beast. We used a effected that
showed the scenes in our music
video blend in together. We
blended the close up and
establishing shot together to also
represent the confusion and the
“hunting” of the character when
she walks from the back of the
trees towards the camera.
10. Print products
• Our print products was inspired by Lana Del Rey – Born to die album cover. We thought the
simplicity of the cover was far more effective so we based our ideas around her album cover.
The picture we decided on had no emotions and the artist was looking directly at the camera
just like Lana Del Rey does in hers. Our image was a medium shot and the character is looking
directly at the camera so the audience can feel the emotions through the picture which makes
it more effective.
11. • Our magazine advert was
similar to our front cover
but we used a different
image. We wanted the two
to be similar so the theme
was consistent throughout.
