How have I used
conventions
for my media product?
Typical romance films consist
of a gender and sexuality. In
our main task we have made it
very prominent to the
audience that this love story is
between a male a female who
are currently at a stage in life
where love can become a
problem.
One convention of a romance film
is that it can sometimes result in
characters going different
directions due to problems they
may be facing this could be
personal. The story behind why
the characters in our film are
forced to go their separate ways
is due to family situations such as
family background and whether
they will accept the relationship.
The main responsibility of a romance film
is to address real life situations that
teenagers and young adults may be
facing. The theme of romance usually
circulates around females as they find it
most relevant to them. Romantic films
have an affect on females more than
males.
Our film is set in a realist setting (school) this
gives a sense of realism as teenagers are able
to relate to it more. The fact that the love story
is set in a school suggests it is mainly targeted
at teenagers who are in school or young adults.
Most couples may feel that there relationship
can only exist where it is hidden from their
families.
Diegetic and Non – Diegetic sound:
Both diegetic and non – diegetic sound are used within our film. Using both makes the
film seem more real. Non diegetic sound used in this film would be the music that is
played during the start and towards the end of the opening. I believe that this helps the
film flow better; without the music it would seem very plain and dreary. The diegetic
sound used in this short opening clip would be any other forms of sound i.e. dialogue,
school bell etc. the use of the school bell also gives a sense of realism, making it more
obvious to the viewers that it is set in a school.
From undertaking researches about the conventions for a romance film I learnt that there is
usually some sort of music playing in the background (non-diegetic).Preferably soft instruments
such as pianos and violins hence we made sure that our film also included something similar.
This sets the mood of the film and helps the film to achieve its purpose; which is to get the
audience to feel the emotions for themselves even if they may have never experienced such
situations in real life.

The audience of romance films are majority girls so it is much easier to get the viewers to feel
emotions and empathy.
