1. Inspirations for our video
Our four inspirational music videosare Clown- EmeliSandé, Someone
like youand Hello by Adele as well as nothing compares 2uby Sinéad O’
Connor.
The inspirational videoswe decided onall have a commontheme of
being dull, old fashioned, black& white and are quite performance
based.
Emeli Sandé
Clown- EmeliSandé has several close upsof her while she’ssinging and
the concentrationof the contrastinthe darkroomwith a dimmed
spotlight worksreally well with the effect we want to put forth for the
creating of our ownmusic video. We like the low camera angle that
was used in her video with her the slow and expressionlessemotions
show in this monologue type scene.
Throughout the video there are quite a lot of low angled shotsof the
old fashioned setting which fitsin perfectly with the way we want to
portray our ownmusicvideo. As our storyline isquite sad and
emotional we’d be using several close up low-angled shotswith dim
lighting to create the sad and depressing atmosphere.
We also like the technique of the reoccurring and different focusesused
as many shotsfocused onusing a close-up or mid angle or a direct
focuson a prop with the background and surroundingsblurred out.
The lighting is essential throughoutthe video, the brightlighting
expressesexposure and the dimlighting expressesclosesand cold
emotionsto enhance the sorrow feelings.
The dominant colour in the video is black which is clearly a common
theme in the video and also through the use of Mise-en-Scene youcan
see the seriousnessand emotionportrayed. The use of direct address
and eye contact with the camera clearly helpsexpressher emotions
and show the viewerswhat she’sfeeling issomething we’d like to
create inour own video.
2. Sinéad O’ Connor
The video of Nothing compares2uby Sinéad O’ Connor is a Close-up
throughout the majority of the video of her singing. Youjust see her
facial expressions and the direct eye contact she has with the camera
that showsthrough to her audience. The background of thisis black as
well as the Mise-en-Scene while her face is brightly lit up to see her
direct facial expressionsand her emotions. We also like the darkand
faded/ fuzzed out setting of the parkasit givesit an oldentype of feel.
Sinéad’s video isvery performance based and that’swhat we wanted
to create for our ownmusic. We liked the simplicity of the video and
eventhough the storyline of the video issimple the close-upsand eye
contact throughout are reallyeffective. We also like the framing of the
headshots used as it’s vey simple yet effective inexpressing emotion.
Adele
Someone like you- Adele’svideo is very narrative. The lyrics relate to
her actionsand emotionsthat are used and shownthroughout the
video. Fromher lyricsand walking alone we can see that she is lonely
and full of quite sad and expressive emotions.
Close ups and extreme close upsare used a lot throughout the video.
This allowsus to see her true emotionsthrough her facial expressions
making us understand how she is really feeling. Throughout the video
there’sa shadow usually onher face creating a sense of mystery and
secrecy which shows she’strying to block out and hide her true feelings.
It’s as if she’s hiding the pain and hurt she is really feeling and the dull
colours, tonesand lighting tie in with her emotionsbeing expressed
throughout the video. There are several shotsof her looking down
which representsthe way she’sfeeling depressedand low. Adele is
generally looking at the camera giving direct address, which is quite
powerful inshowing a relationship betweenher asanartist and her
viewers. The lyricsinterlinkwith what is going on in the video and the
use of extreme close upsof her eyeswhich are mainly used createsa
feeling of her being close, that she’sdirectly and specifically telling her
audience how she is really feeling. We cansee the sadness in her eyes
directly which has a very powerful message.
We liked the fact that Adele doesn’t conformto stereotypesof other
mainstreamartists. The representationof Adele’scharacter and the
3. lyrics fit perfectly together. We like the different usesof shotsthat’s
beenused and the colour choice of black which representsher
lonelinesswhich also relatesto the lyrics. The simplicity of the mise-en
scene shows that she’sso hurt fromthe end of her relationship that she
no longer hasanything to lookforward to or dressup for. She looks
very natural and basic which reinforcesher femininity fromher lackof
makeup.
