1. Goodwin’s Music Video Theory
Ashes – Celine Dion
Genre Conventions
(what do we expect from a music video of
a track written to accompany a feature
film? – does this meet our expectations?)
The song doesn’t meet expectations to the film as the film is upbeat but the music is slow and
emotional. Also its more of the song you would find in a romance film but instead is being used in an
action film.
Relationship between visual and lyrics
(are there links between the action and
the words of the song?)
From the lyrics ‘ let beauty come out of ashes’ symbolises the story of Deadpool as he dies and comes
back almost invincible. ‘Ashes’ is the remains and building things from these ‘ashes’ and making
something negative positive.
Relationship between visual and music
(are there links between the action and
the rhythm of the song?)
When the song started to get emotional and upsetting it showed more upsetting clips from the film.
Seeing the scenes of him and his girlfriend shows their relationship as well as clips of Celine singing.
Voyeuristic treatment (male gaze)
(are the females in the video positioned
as objects of male desire?)
Deadpool reverts the male gaze as he dances in stilettoes like a woman normally would.
Focus on artist (brand recognition)
(is the artist featured prominently?)
Celine is featured and recognised all throughout the video.
Intertextual references
(are there references to other media
Deadpool 2 is referenced as the music is for Deadpool 2. At the end of the video it also references to
Titanic as she also sings the famous theme song for that film. As well as this it is also very similar to the
‘heart will go on’ music video as it shows the story in clips from the film and is very emotional. Celine
