In today's class, we are going to examine capital punishment
(what, where, how and why?).
Before we start, let’s see where the class is on the issue to begin with.
Q. Do you think Ireland should have the death penalty?
Why/Why not? Write down your answer 2-3 lines.
2. Open green books on pages 80-82.
We’ll read pages 80-81. (4 readers)
We’ll answer some questions about the map.
You’ll write a reason for and a reason against
capital punishment.
Finally we’ll have a walking debate.

3. Four Readers – three paragraphs page 80, one paragraph
on page 81. Take note before starting.
(Note) Capital Punishment: The death penalty is legally
allowing someone to be killed as a punishment for a crime.
It is considered in most of the world as a human rights
abuse.
Use the map to answer questions on page 81
1. Name five countries that use capital punishment for
ordinary crimes.
2. Name one country in Europe that has the death penalty.

5. Let’s read the five arguments for and the five arguments
against the death penalty on pages 81 and 82.
Write down what you believe to be the best argument, the
best bullet point, for each side. (2 total: FOR, AGAINST)
We’ll then do the walking (standing) debate. Be sure to
read all the reasons on pages 81-82 and think which side
you agree with then. Be ready to argue for your side and
against the opposition.
