2. We are going to read page 280 - 282 of the book which
examines different courts in charge of different aspects of
the law.
We shall take notes along the way about what they all do.
You’ll work in groups of 2-3 with those around you to answers
questions on page 105 and 106 of your activity book.
Plan for today
3. I will need about ten people to read page 280 - 282 of your main
book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
(note) The Supreme Court has five judges who all other judges
must follow. Their decisions become case law.
(note) The Court of Appeal makes sure all decisions in the lower
courts are fair.
(note) The high court deals with the most serious cases; civil or
criminal. Their decisions also become case law.
(Discuss) If you were a judge, which would you rather; criminal or
civil cases? Would you rather deal with criminals or makings
decisions which affect the public?

(note) In the Circuit Court, Judges travel around the country (like
a circuit). It examines mid-size cases and is the first time a jury
gets involved.
(note) The District Court hears minor cases and has no jury.
(note) The Children’s Court deals with under 18’s is held ‘in
camera’ (as private as can be).
(note) The Small Claims court deals with small disputes.
(Task) When you are done, start looking at 105 of your activity book
with those beside you.
