Development: Change which improves people’s lives and is
considered good.
Many years ago, a theme park similar to Tayto park was going to be built in
Drogheda. Would this have been considered ‘good’ for the town? Why?

2.  We’ll start off by reading the introduction to the chapter on
page 109.
 We’ll read about social development (making people happy)
on page 110, then take a note.
 We’ll read about economic development (making money)
on page 111, then take a note.
 We’ll finally end with a walking debate. Which is better:
social or economic development. Would you rather be
happy and poor or rich but sad.

 (note) Celtic Tiger: This is when Ireland experienced rapid
economic growth between 1990 and 2007 due to foreign
investment.
 This growth was too fast and led to a crash (high unemployment
and unused property for example).
 Question to discuss: do you know any abandoned building
projects or places that were only half-done.

6.  Scenario: Ireland has the money to invest in either social
or economic development.
 We can either improve your standard of living or improve
services (more jobs, more houses)
 Pick a side of the room (social left, economic right) and
stand there now. Be able to explain why you chose that
side.
