This document outlines the plan for a class that will discuss national debt and poverty. The class will begin with a warm-up activity defining national debt. Students will then read pages 130-131 about debt forgiveness and enforcement. Working in pairs, students will write articles explaining what they read in a simple tone. Finally, students will complete activities in their reflective journals answering questions and summarizing the key terms and links to poverty.
1. Warm-up – pens, paper, journal, books
Take down the definition, then raise your hand and answer the question:
National Debt: The money a country has borrowed. Usually
they have to pay interest (more than they borrowed).
Pretend Ireland owed money to another country (England,
France, Germany). How might the government get 2-3 billion
euro to pay them. What might they have to stop / start doing.
Homework: reflective journal page 83
Skills: Literacy, managing information
Objectives:
1. Examine more causes of poverty.
2. Understand the terms national debt.
Heading: Development 4 Date:
2. We shall read page 130 - 131 today which explains what
happens when debt is forgiven or enforced.
You’ll work in pairs to answer a question. You’ll write an
article in a very simple, talkative tone like your just
explaining what we just read to each other.
We’ll answer questions on page 84 of the reflective journal.
Plan for today Development 4 Date:
3. I shall need fifteen volunteers today to read. Raise hands at the
end of a paragraph. Take notes as we go.
(note) Cancelling or restructuring debt means that countries
can invest in education, healthcare and infrastructure .
(note) In the long run, a country which is developing will have
more money which profits its neighbours.
(note) Infrastructure: buildings, roads, power. The physical
things needed for a country to operate.
When finished with notes, examine the images on page 131.
Page 130 - 131 Reading and writing
4. Having read page 130 – 131, answer Activity 2 on page 84 of
your reflective journals (blue books)
Try to summarise, in your own words, what we have been
reading this class. You can work with a partner, trying to
explain to them the following terms:
National debt, forgiving debt, not forgiving debt.
Link this all to poverty – people being poor.
