This document provides an outline for a lesson plan that examines public opinion and how people are influenced. The lesson includes:
1. Reading passages from a book about how people are easily influenced and media reporting rules. Students will take notes on key terms.
2. Watching a video on persuading people and discussing any thoughts.
3. More reading and note-taking from the book, including on bias and types of lies.
4. An activity where students divide key words into boxes and complete an elimination game in their workbook.
5. Identifying newspapers in Ireland and creating headlines about categories as an activity.
1. Warm –up – pens, paper, journal, books, note
(note) Public Opinion: what the majority of people are thinking,
believing or wanting. Do we create or follow it however?
(Discuss) Think of someone you really trust, admire or believe in. If
they had an opinion on something (politics, news, sport) would you
assume it to be true? Can you give an example?
Homework
Will be a short 5-10 minute activity in the activity book.
Skills
Expressing ideas and managing information.
Today's Objectives
1. Examine the idea of ‘public opinion’.
2. See how easily people are influenced.
Heading: Media 2 Date:
2. We are going to read page 310 – 312 of the book which looks
at how you are easily influenced and some rules involved in
reporting news.
We shall take notes along the way about the rules.
We shall watch a short 12 minute video on ‘how to persuade
people to do whatever you want’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFdCzN7RYbw
We’ll then examine some key words by doing the exercise in
the activity book.
Plan for today
3. I will need about ten people to read page 310 – 312 of your main
book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
(note) People’s attention spans are short. Giant, bold
headlines are therefore effective.
(note) News Corp, created by Rupert Murdoch, current CEO
Robert Thompson owns many media companies.
(Video) Should you go to collage or work in the news industry, you will
learn and use the following rules. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFdCzN7RYbw
(Discuss) Open the next page in your main book, page 312, as
we discuss the following: Any thoughts on the video?
Page 310 - 312 (main book) reading and notes
4. I will need about four more people to read page 312 of your main
book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
(note) Bias: only telling one side of a story is being unfair
and is discrimination.
(note) Libel is a written lie meant to hurt someone’s
reputation. Slander is when you say something meant to
hurt someone’s reputation.
(#Think - Examine afterwards)
(Task) Start looking at page 122 of your activity book then.
Your dividing key words into boxes, playing a game of
process of elimination and finishing page 122 for homework.

5. Before moving to the activity book, you may be interested in
what are considered the most popular newspapers in
Ireland. On page 120 of your activity book then there is a
task.
(Task 1) Your looking for the words ‘Daily’, ‘Sunday’, ‘.ie or
.com’ in the Papers on page 120.
(Task 2) Try and create an interesting headline about each of
the categories on page 121. I suggest you start with sport of
TV, have fun and complete the page.
Finish for homework.
