16. I feel like applying to university would really help with focusing my passion of design into one
specific area and expand my knowledge and build on my skills which will help me when looking
for a job in design. I also think university will help with my independence by living away from
home as well as preparing me for work in an industry that is always developing.
My desire to study a creative course at University level was sparked in my secondary school
education. In my IT work we had to create an interactive PowerPoint which would be used as a
way of attracting tourism to York. Although the tools offered by PowerPoint were very limited in
terms of design elements, I still had to create something that would appeal to a specific client
and take into consideration the demographic I am creating for.
At college I studied level 3 extended diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology. On
this course I really expanded my knowledge in many aspect of design and production. Through
the first year of this course we looked at the broad area of media, gaining skills in short film,
animation and print. In the first year I produced a magazine front cover and double page
spread, a website, a short film and an animated video game concept. For my final major project
in year 1 I wanted to develop my page layout and design skills. I created a front cover, 2 double
page spreads and a poster for an original magazine idea I created. I employed original
photography, conducting a studio shoot. By focusing on print I have gained many skills in
Photoshop, InDesign and photography. Along with the practical skills I have also expanded my
knowledge in page layout, font choice and colour scheme which is important when creating
products that are practical and visually appealing.
After my time studying at university I hope to expand my knowledge and creative skills in many
aspects of digital media. I hope to eventually be self-employed with my own company, creating
pieces for a wide range of media outlets. University will help me achieve this by expanding my
knowledge of programs and equipment used throughout digital media. One area of the media I
want to work in is Virtual and Augmented Reality, as I feel this is a fast growing area in the
media industry and is something that has incredible potential for its applications.
Outside of education I have many hobbies as well as a part time job, working as a host for a
restaurant. By being the host, I am the first point of contact for a customer, requiring me to have
good communication skills. At my job I also work as part of a team, working toward a singular
goal which requires the ability to work efficiently with others. Due to my love for technology I
have a huge interest in playing computer games in which I have played for eSports teams and
competed in nationwide tournaments as well as represented York.
