16. Introduction
• I want to study creative product design work at
university, preferably for productions in music,
video and/or sports. For example, advertisement
posters, covers and portfolios etc. I have always
been interested in the aesthetics of design
products, and enjoy using software such as
Photoshop to create these products. I would like
to go to university to further my education, skills
and knowledge, particularly in this sector.
University could give me many opportunities to
create products of all kinds, whilst studying
creative product design further.
17. Academic History
• The subjects I studied at secondary school were Maths, English
Language/Literature, Science,. German, Sports Studies, Engineering,
Religious Education, History. English Language/Literature helped me to
develop my reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, which are all
important attributes to have to be able to build contacts, communicate
and network between colleagues and clients. I feel this will help create
new opportunities and develop current ones in my working career.
Studying maths and science allowed me to explore quantitative and logical
reasoning, helping me to solve hard problems. In History I had to analyse
and evaluate certain sources and images, this gave me the experience of
critical thinking, forming opinions and judgements based on my analysis
and evaluation of topics. In College I had to analyse and evaluate products
and sources in further detail, which will prepare me for University as I will
need to do this in any course for research and evaluation. In Engineering I
had to create a portfolio of my work. I could present it professionally and
clear.
18. Current Study
• For each section of this course I am studying in York College (Creative Media
Production) I had to discuss my initial reaction and plans after looking at the brief. This
has been a helpful part of the course requirement, providing me with a baseline
outline, for initialising any further/future projects. Next I would conduct primary and
secondary research, where I would use the internet and other sources to research
products and then get personal opinions/views from people and I would then analyse
this research to allow me to create a more detailed plan of what I want to create/do. I
would then complete pre-production and planning. Planning included safety and
contingency planning also. I would then complete weekly and daily production
reflections where I talked about how I was feeling about the work and how I could
improve it, which allowed me to see the flaws in my work and allowed to achieve a
higher grade by improving it which would be useful in future work and all University
courses. To create my work I used different software, such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro
and InDesign. These software will be very useful for future creation of products because
Photoshop is the main software used for media production, and being experienced in
using this software (which I am) will be very useful. For my course in College I created
an album cover and other music related productions using Photoshop, as creating
graphic designs of or for products are my main interest.
19. The Future
• In the future I am looking towards creating different product design
work for different productions, for example musicians (tour posters,
album covers, portfolios, etc.), the film industry (film covers,
advertisement posters, portfolios, etc.), sports productions, such as
clubs, journalists, sport events, etc. (creating products such as
advertisement posters, logos, design art, etc.). So my future
planning is primarily based on visual product design work for
different clients, and hopefully one day have my own product
design business, so people will contact me to design, create and
promote their product/brand. I am sure University will help me
achieve this plan as it will broaden my knowledge and skill base in
designing products, giving me a solid start in my chosen career,
however that may develop.
20. Outside College
• I completed the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, which included three months of
voluntary work and three months of learning a new skill. I believe this shows I have
the propensity to learn new skills, sometimes in a short amount of time.
Committing to volunteer work helped me to gain experience in something new,
helped me to develop skills and build my confidence meeting new people.
• I also play for a football team, outside of college, which I have captained, this
shows I can work in a team, if needed, and shows leadership. I play football for this
team twice a week and train/play separately with peers on top of this, therefore I
can commit to a task and work on it with desire, and I would especially be
committed to a task if I have enjoyment when completing it, and so far I have
enjoyed the graphic design work I have been doing, therefore I will be committed
to my work. Another reason why I will have commitment to finishing my work is
seeing the end result, and the accomplishment of the final product.
21. Conclusion
• To summarise I would like to go to university to
expand my skillset and understanding of product
design and give me a chance to create
professional work, in my chosen areas, for my
chosen clients, to give me a start to my future
plan, which is to produce visual design work for
professional and/or upcoming companies and
businesses. I would like to offer a solid, positive
service for fledgling businesses to fulfil their
potential through the art and power of media.
22. Finished PS
• I want to study creative product design work at university. I have always been interested in the aesthetics of design products and enjoy using
software such as the Adobe Creative Suite. I would like to go to university to further my education, skills and knowledge, particularly in this sector.
University could give me opportunities to create products of all kinds, whilst studying creative product design further.
• At secondary school English Language/Literature helped me to develop my reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, which are all important
attributes to have to be able to build contacts, communicate and network between colleagues and clients. Studying maths and science allowed me

I had to analyse and evaluate products and sources in further detail, which will prepare me for University, as I will need to do this in any course for

• For my Creative Media Production course in each unit I logged my initial reaction and plans after looking at the brief. This has been a helpful part
of the course requirement, providing me with a baseline outline, for initialising any further/future projects. Next I would conduct primary and
secondary research, where I would research products and then get personal opinions/views from the target demographic. I would then analyse
them, allowing me to create a more detailed plan of what I want to produce. I would then complete pre-production and planning. During
production I would conduct weekly and daily production reflections where I talked about how I was feeling about the work and how I could
improve it, which allowed me to see the flaws in my work and allowed to achieve a higher grade by improving it. To create my work I used
different software, such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro and InDesign. For my final major project from year 1 I created an album cover and other
music related productions using Photoshop, expanding my knowledge of the software and page layout and design.
• This year I am producing work for a client; a vinyl record store, producing a poster, a business card and logo. This shows that I can produce work
for a client and follow their needs. This will be helpful as I will have the experience of working for a client and for my Final Major Project I want to
make a product design piece for either a music, video game or film production; exploring page layout and design producing cover art for various
products and creating marketing material. These existing skills should prove valuable at university and allow me to have portfolio of work for
future clients.
• In the future I want to work freelance, creating different product design work for different productions and clients. University will help me achieve
this plan as it will broaden my knowledge and skill base in designing products, giving me a solid start in my chosen career.
• I play for a football team, outside of college, which I captain for. This allowed me to develop my leadership and team working skills.
• To summarise I would like to go to university to expand my skillset and understanding of product design providing me with a chance to work
professionally in this area.
Editor's Notes
Brief introduction referencing what subject/s (keep general if necessary) you are applying for and briefly why you want to go to university.
Write a short paragraph about subjects you’ve already studied at school/college that have helped prepare you for your chosen courses at University- level 2 or GCSE level. What did you make? What skills did you learn? Why did this make you want to progress on and study further etc.
Talk about this course- Level 3 Creative Media Production. Reference how it has helped you prepare for your chosen courses at University. What did you make? What skills did you learn? Why did this make you want to progress on and study further etc.
Reference specific projects and software/hardware that you are familiar with.
What do you want to do in the future (ensure it is related to the subjects you are applying for). How will university help you to achieve that?
What do you do outside college? Any hobbies, part time jobs, client work, volunteer work? How does this make you a better candidate for university study?
