Design Studies – Theory and
Research in Graphic Design
In the section I screenshotted, Ann C. Tyler writes about the
importance of considering your audience when creating any piece of
visual communication. She goes on to say that the designer creates
a piece in order to persuade the audience to adopt a belief. Tyler
then goes on to explain the purpose of this persuasion is to
accomplish one of the following goals:
"To induce the audience to take some action" - an example of this a
film poster. The audience will have to of been considered when
creating a poster as that who will be watching the film. In this
instance taking some action would be going to see the film.
"To educate the audience" - an example of this is an infographic. The
audience will have needed to be considered for an infographic as
you need to be giving the right information to the right people. Based
on what Tyler said, to educate an audience you need to persuade
them to accept information or data and this can only be done
effectively by tailoring your piece of work around the correct
audience.
"To provide the audience with an experience" - an example of this
can be anything visually appealing. The audience will need to be
considered when creating a piece of art as the audience is who you
are trying to persuade for approval.
Basics Graphic Design – Design Research
• Primary Research: Examples of primary research I could use in my own
research would most likely be surveys, interviews and focus groups. This
would be done by peers in my class, friends outside of my class that have an
interest or knowledge of the topic and possibly forums relating to the
subject.
• Secondary Research: Examples of secondary research I could use in
my own research would most likely be magazines, encyclopedias, news
reports and newspapers. The majority of these will be located online
however I could also use libraries in order to collect a wider range of results
from my research.
• Tertiary Research: I feel tertiary research wouldn’t be the most useful
research method for me unless it could also be used as a secondary source
of research. Examples of tertiary research however are manuals,
guidebooks, fact books and directories.
Graphic Designer – Aaron Campbell
One graphic designer I chose to research for inspiration was Aaron
Campbell.
Campbell, based in Vancouver, began his career as a designer and
illustrator after first laying his hands on Photoshop in 2007. His
portfolio is full of drawings of his signature characters, digital
drawings and abstract art.
The side of his artwork that I'm most interested in is his vaporwave
artwork that he has produced for bands as well as his vaporwave
artwork showcase. Campbells vaporwave artwork is something I
aspire to create myself, I feel it captures all the conventions you
expect to see in a piece of vaporwave artwork. It has the VHS style
overlay, bright neon colours, 80's-90's technology and the various
glitch effects that can be seen throughout. These are all aspects I
will have to include in my own piece in order to achieve a high
quality product that fits with the vaporwave theme.
Due to Campbells experience I feel it will be a bit of a push to create
pieces of the same quality in the given time frame however I feel I
can produce multiple pieces that incorporate the same conventions
and fit with the theme and style
Existing Product Research
Product 1: Vaporwave Fanzine
Front Covers
Here I chose to analyse a selection of front covers which I found on
the website Issuu. Issuu is a website in which anyone can upload
their magazine/fanzines, it ranges from professional pieces from well
known companies such as PC Gamer and BBC Good Food to
Fanzines made by one person teams and students. I chose to look
at 3 front covers from individual creators. Unfortunately all of the
fanzines I chose to analyse were in Spanish however this isnt a big
issue for me as I am mainly focusing on the designs and artwork with
these fanzines.
I believe the target audience for these fanzines have quite a range.
This is because the microgenre that is vaporwave incorporates
aspects from different time periods which would appeal to a range of
different people. For example vaporwave, which emerged in the
early 2010's on the likes of Reddit and 4chan, would mainly be
relevant to teenagers and young people as they are the largest
demographic who use these sites. The reason I feel vaporwave
might include a larger demographic is because of its nostalgic
references such as the frequent inclusion of the N64, Windows 95
and VHS to name a few. These nostalgic references, which are
mainly from the 80's and 90's, would mainly appeal to the middle
aged audience as it is a callback to their childhood/teenage years.
Front Cover 1 – Cult zine vaporwave
This front cover is from the Cult zine vaporwave fanzine. It was created by Renzo
Novelli who seems to be an individual with no organisation. I tried to locate a
portfolio, website or Facebook page in which I could see other pieces however I
couldn’t find anything.
The fanzine itself is in Spanish however this isn't a problem for me as I am
focusing on the design elements and overall aesthetic of the front cover.
Straight away you can tell that this is a front cover from a vaporwave fanzine.
This is because includes many of the conventions that are seen throughout the
vaporwave microgenre. The most noticeable convention is the use of the colour
purple and green. These are very common throughout vaporwave artwork as its
quite a tranquil colour palette which relates to the tranquil music style that the
artwork originated from. Another convention that can be seen is the use of the
Greek statue Helios, the God of the Sun in Greek mythology. This statue has
become widely recognised as the face of vaporwave artwork due to its use in the
cover of Macintosh Plus – Florral Shoppe (2011) which established a blueprint for
the genre.
Front Cover 1 – Cult zine vaporwave
Here I split the front cover of the Cult zine vaporwave fanzine into 3 sections.
Section 1: This can be seen at the top left of the front cover and is treated as somewhat of a
brand mark for the fanzine . The font that has been used is a sans serif font which is
common throughout headings and titles. The word cult has been put on 2 lines and
enclosed in a square and has the word zine, which is also in a sans serif font, overlapping
the square in a different colour text. This overlapping of 2 different colours gives an abstract
look to the front cover as well as a bit of a glitch effect due to the colours green and purple
being opposite colours. This glitch effect is popular with vaporwave designs.
Section 2: This is the main focal point of the front cover with the main image being a sketch
style image of the statue of Helios. There is then another picture of the Helios statue behind
it with a lowered opacity to give a blurred effect. There is also a deep purple circle toward
the top right of the statue. The background to the image is a green box however the statue
is not fully enclosed in this box. This gives the effect of an abstract piece. There is a lot of
overlapping aspects to this section and a lot of the images are effected by one another when
they overlap. I believe this overlapping is done to create a sense of distortion which is
common within vaporwave artwork as it represents the distorted effect that is heard
throughout the music.
Section 3: The final section is the masthead of the fanzine which again is a sans serif font.
This is a slightly different font to the one used at the top of the front cover due to it having
more of an 80's feel to it

Front Cover 2 – Vaporwave
This front cover is from the Vaporwave fanzine. It was created by agafaz who
seems to be an individual with no organisation. I tried to locate a portfolio,
website or Facebook page in which I could see other pieces however I couldn’t
find anything.
The fanzine itself is in Spanish however this isn't a problem for me as I am
focusing on the design elements and overall aesthetic of the front cover.
This front cover is slightly different to the previous front cover however it still has
the characteristics of a vaporwave front cover. This front cover is more a collage
of nostalgic stickers. The use of the Greek statue, windows 95 UI, palm trees and
classic computer is what gives this front cover its vaporwave feel. The glitch
effect used on the 'Vaporwave' text is also a common convention in vaporwave
artwork. The pixel glitch style used in the title is similar to something found on a
classical games console or computer which is something commonly associated
with vaporwave.
Front Cover 2 – Vaporwave
Here I split the front cover of the Vaporwave fanzine into 3 sections.
Section 1: This can be seen at the top of the front cover and is seen as the
masthead for the fanzine. The font is a sans serif font however it is heavily
pixelated to give it a sense of nostalgia which is a common theme within
vaporwave artwork. There is also a glitch effect that has been added to the
masthead by having 2 more layers of the word vaporwave however they are in the
colours green and purple. The reason green and purple have been used is
because they are opposite colours on the colour wheel and also because thy are
very common colours within the vaporwave art style. The Japanese lettering is
also in a sans serif font. I feel the Japanese lettering is only there for aesthetics
and the readers aren't expected to know what it means.
Section 2: This is the middle section of the front cover and has quite a lot going
on. There is a lot of individual images together for this section. The paint window
which looks like its from an early 2000's PC is very common in vaporwave due to
the frequent use/reference to old Microsoft operating systems such as Windows
95. Another image that is worth pointing out is the use of the Helios statue which
has become the 'face of vaporwave' in some peoples eyes. The use of a large
pink stroke around the edge of the image gives it the effect of a sticker on the
page. The palm trees, in my opinion, have been added to add to the tranquil feel
which again is common within vaporwave art.
Section 3: The final section can be seen right at the bottom of the front page and
shows the Windows 95 task bar. I feel by having this task bar it gives the feeling
that you are looking at this front cover on a computer, which is where the
vaporwave genre grew from. It also references Windows 95 which is a very
common theme used throughout vaporwave art because of its nostalgia.

Front Cover 3 – A Influência do Design no
Vaporwave
This front cover is from the A InfluĂŞncia do Design no Vaporwave fanzine. It was
created by a user of the same name. The creator seems to be an individual with
no organisation. I tried to locate a portfolio, website or Facebook page in which I
could see other pieces however I couldn’t find anything.
The fanzine itself is in Spanish however this isnt a problem for me as I am
focusing on the design elements and overall aesthetic of the front cover.
This front cover incorporates aspects from both of the previous front covers. It
has the pastel, neon background which changes gradient across the cover similar
to the background on the first front cover. The use of sticker-like images such as
the dolphin and palm tree are similar to the ones seen in the second front cover.
Another recurring image is the Helios Greek statue. The lettering that is in
Japanese is also very common throughout vaporwave artwork. This is because
vaporwave incorporates many aspects of other cultures in its artwork. Some
consider vaporwave to be the first truly global aesthetic because of its focus on
various other cultures.
Front Cover 3 – A Influência do Design no
Vaporwave
Here I split the front cover of the A InfluĂŞncia do Design no Vaporwave fanzine
into 2 sections.
Section 1: This can be seen at the top of the front cover. Both fonts are sans serif
fonts however the top font has a lot more of a rounded feel to it and gives the
effect of neon strips which I think adds to the vaporwave theme. The pixelated
font also adds to this theme by giving the feeling of nostalgia due to the pixelated
style.
Section 2: This is the main section of the front cover and has separate images all
added together to create a vaporwave collage for the front cover. The main focus
of this section is the large Helios statue that has been distorted. This distortion
adds to the vaporwave effect due to it being quite abstract. The other images that
are very common within vaporwave art, is the dolphin, rainbow doughnut and
palm tree. All of these have been used as they give a feeling of tranquility which
is one of the main themes within vaporwave art. The Japanese writing is not
meant to be translated and is used purely for aesthetics. The white square
background is also very popular within vaporwave art.

Product 1 – Vaporwave Fanzine Front Covers
Here I have used the website Adobe Color in order to breakdown the main colours used in these front covers. By doing this I can
clearly see which colours are used the most in order to gain an understanding of which colours I could use in my own artwork. The
colours that are used the most is purple, blue and green. These colours are used because they represent tranquility which is the
overall theme of the vaporwave genre. These colours have also been used due to their link to the 80's and 90's. In this time period
neon colours were very popular and were used in fashion, commercials, movies and tech etc. And due to vaporwave getting a lot of
inspiration from this time period the colours have become a part of the genre. All of these front covers contain bright pastel colours
because of the association with tropical and neon styles.
Product 2: Vaporwave
Merchandise
Here is a selection of clothing from the online store
Vapor95. Vapor95 sells a wide range of clothes all in the
vaporwave style. They boast a range of jumpers, t-shirts,
hats, hoodies, bottoms and accessories.
The designs range from full art pieces that has artwork all
over the clothing (sunset jumper at the top right) to print
work.
I will be focusing on the print merchandise as this is the
style I would like to create for my own product.
I feel the target audience for this clothing is teenager/young
adults as this is the most popular demographic for
vaporwave music and art. To further support this, all of the
models showcasing the clothing all fit into this demographic
which would suggest teenagers/young adults are the most
likely to buy these products.
Vapor95 Clothing – 88 MPH Long Sleeve Tee
This long sleeve tee is for sale on the website vapor95 retailing at $39.95. The
print design is 100% unique to the Vapor95 store and will be what I'm focusing on
as I would like to create my own print design in a similar style.
The design they have used for the tee is picture of the modified DeLorean from
the Back to the Future series. The reason this has been used in vaporwave art is
because of its nostalgic feel. Within vaporwave art there is a lot of refences to the
80's and 90's and due to Back to the Future being released in 1985 this is why it
has been used. The palm trees seen in this print are very common within
vaporwave artwork as they represent tranquility, which is a running theme within
the genre. The neon purple colour that has been used throughout is also very
common as purple is very heavily associated with vaporwave art. The reason for
this is in the 80's and 90's colours such as pink and purple were used a lot in
fashion, design and art and due to vaporwave being linked to the 80's and 90's
they have incorporated this into their art style.
Vapor95 Clothing – Faux Visage Sweatshirt
This sweatshirt is for sale on the website vapor95 retailing at $46.75. The print
design is 100% unqiue to the Vapor95 store and will be what im focusing on as I
would like to create my own print design in a similar style.
The design that has been used for this sweatshirt uses a very popular style in the
vaporwave community. Where some images gace 1 main focus, images like
these have multiple subjects and show off more of a collage of smaller images.
The statue used in this print is very common within the vaporwave genre as
statues were common decoration pieces for rich people in the 80's. Another
reason the statue has been used is because of the popular song Florral Shoppe,
which had the Helios statue on the cover, springboarded the vaporwave genre.
The dolphins used on the print represent tranquility which is a very popular theme
within the vaporwave genre. The final area of this print is the classic style PC that
can be seen in the bottom right of the image. This is a reference to the nostalgia
commonly used in vaporwave artwork.
Product 3: Aesthetica Magazine
Here is chose a professional art and culture magazine called Aesthetica. It is a bi-
monthly magazine that features a range of art from film, visual art, music,
architecture and performance.
The reason I chose this magazine is because this will have a similar design
layout to what I hope to create with my fanzine. The main content for this
magazine is showcasing art and photogrpahy which is very similar to the content
I will be having in my own fanzine.
By looking at something that has been created by a professional company I can
get a good understanding of the quality expected from an established company.
By taking this into consideration, I hope to find a good balance between the
quality of a professional magazine and the niche style of a fanzine.
Aesthetica Magazine – Double Page Spread
Here I selected 2 different double page spreads from the Aesthetica magazine.
Both of these double page spreads show a main image wit very little text. I will
have multiple pages like this in my fanzine. This is because I will be using my
fanzine to showcase artwork instead of writing informative pieces on the
vaporwave genre, however I will feature some articles to break up the artwork.
Despite the subject of the images not being the same as mine I am still going to
analyse the layout and other aspects that could be applied to my own product.
Screenshot 1 shows a single image stretched over a double page spread. The
image is off centre slightly and has a greyed out box to the left with a small
amount of information regarding the image. I feel by having this image not fully
stretch over the double page spread, it gives a more creative feel. This is a
layout option I will most likely use within my own fanzine as it is unconventional
which is something that is common with vaporwave arwork. I may also consider
including the grey strip as it gives me a space to write a bit about the imagr,
however I don’t think I'll use grey as it wont fit well with the colours used in the
image. The border around the image is also something I will use in my fanzine
as it gives room for page numbers and any other text.
Screenshot 2 shows a double page spread of 2 photo's of a similar style
however they are separate images. I really like this idea for a double page
spread as it gives the feeling of a double page spread however the images are
different giving variation to the page. This is something I will most likely use
within my own fanzine.

Audience Research
Survey Summary
Observation: This question is simply to identify the
difference in males and females who took this
survey and could potentially view my final product.
What this says about my audience: These results
show that there is a majority of males at 59% to
the 41% females.
How will your product appeal to this audience: I
feel these results will have very little effect on my
final product. This is because the content that will
be in my fanzine wont be gender specific at all.
This is due to the vaporwave art style not really
appealing to one gender more than the other. The
only aspect I feel these results will have any
impact on is for the t-shirt I am wanting to create.
By seeing there is more males I feel this will lead
me to create a t-shirt that is mainly for males
however I will try to make it as unisex as
possible.
Survey Summary
Observation: This question shows the age range
of people that completed the survey. These
results were expected with 18-20 being the most
common answer. This is due to me giving my
peers the survey as well as friends on Facebook
who nearly all fall under the 18-20 range.
What this says about my audience: This shows
the most common age range 15-20 which is
expected however I will still incorporate nostalgic
aspects within my work as this is an important
convention within the vaporwave genre.
How will your product appeal to this audience: My
product will appeal to this audience by including
all the main vaporwave genre conventions such
as nostalgic references, neon-pastel colours,
tranquil feel and the effects used in the artwork.
By following these conventions I will appeal to this
audience as this is the most common age range
within fans of vaporwave.
Survey Summary
Observation: This question gives me a good
understanding of how may people read
magazines in comparison to not reading
magazines. It also gives me a good understanding
of how frequently I should release my fanzine in
order to appeal to the most people.
What this says about my audience: It shows
the majority of my audience don’t read
magazines/fanzines however those that do will
most likely read one every month or once every 6
months.
How will your product appeal to this audience: My
product will appeal to this audience by having
monthly releases of my fanzine as I feel this is a
good median. I will also make my product appeal
more to this audience by releasing the fanzine
online as I feel people are more likely to read an
online copy of the fanzine instead of physical
copy.
Survey Summary
Observation: This question shows clearly that the
majority prefer to use online means in order to get
information instead of using physical means. This
is due to technology becoming more readily
available to everyone and the ease of use that
comes with technology.
What this says about my audience: My audience
is much more inclined to use online means in
order to view information and news.
How will your product appeal to this audience:
Despite me making a fanzine which will be a
physical piece I will be uploading it online to
website such as Issuu in order to appeal to the
majority of my audience.
Survey Summary
Observation: That only 37% have heard of
vaporwave as opposed to the 63% who haven't.
This shows that my content is very niche. The
63% who haven't heard of vaporwave will still
have useful answers however as the majority of
my following questions don’t have to be applied to
the vaporwave genre.
What this says about my audience: It shows
the majority aren't familiar with the vaporwave
genre however this is expected due to it being a
niche subject area.
How will your product appeal to this audience: My
product will appeal to this audience by creating
visually appealing art that falls under the
vaporwave genre however I will try to make it so
you don’t have to have an understanding of the
genre to appreciate the art.
Survey Summary
Observation: This shows that the most selected
areas within the vaporwave genre is the music
and overall aesthetic. Art and fashion are also
popular however there are very little interested in
the vaporwave movement
What this says about my audience: That my
audience are very interested in the music and
overall aesthetic of the vaporwave genre. They
are also fairly interested in the art and fashion
How will your product appeal to this audience: My
product will appeal to my audience by having a
heavy focus on the overall vaporwave aesthetic
throughout my fanzine. As for music which was
the most popular option, I may have a section of
my fanzine dedicated to vaporwave music. This
will most likely be done by creating album artwork
for a musician.
Survey Summary
Observation: This shows that the vast majority of
my audience are more interested in shorter
articles over longer articles.
What this says about my audience: This shows
that my audience prefer shorter and informative
pieces. This is most likely due to my audience
being mainly teenagers and young adults who
frequently read information in shorter forms
How will your product appeal to this audience: My
product will appeal to this audience by having
short pieces of information. This will be easy to do
as my fanzine is a look book of artwork which
means that it wont have a lot of text
Survey Summary
Observation: This shows that there is a fairly even
split between those who would and wouldn’t buy
vaporwave inspired clothing
What this says about my audience: That my
audience is split between purchasing vaporwave
clothing. This is most likely due to the majority of
my audience not knowing about vaporwave
however it is important to note that more people
would consider wearing vaporwave inspired
clothing than people who have heard about
vaporwave.
How will your product appeal to this audience: My
product will appeal to my audience by designing a
piece of vaporwave clothing. Based of the results
seen on this survey, half of my audience would be
interested in purchasing vaporwave clothing and
therefor could be interested in my clothing design
Survey Summary
Observation: The most popular feature is music at
70% with fashion and artwork showcases at 54%
and 50%. The least popular features were the
history of vaporwave and reviews. Again this is
most likely due to vaporwave being a niche genre
and the history of vaporwave and reviews would
only be relevant to people who are interested in
the genre
What this says about my audience: This says that
my audience are into the visual area of vaporwave
and mainly focus on the aesthetic. This is
because the most popular features are all
showcases
How will your product appeal to this audience: My
product will appeal to my audience by making my
fanzine a look book which will be used to
showcase artwork and fashion. I may also include
a section that showcases albums which will
appeal to the 70% who selected music
Survey Summary
Observation: The average price that someone
would pay for a vaporwave print t-shirt is ÂŁ22
What this says about my audience: This shows
that my audience would expect a vaporwave print
t-shirt would be a similar price to a standard t-shirt
from an established retailer such as urban
outfitters
How will your product appeal to this audience: My
product will appeal to my audience by creating a
vaporwave print t-shirt that costs somewhere
around ÂŁ22. I will most likely stick within the ÂŁ20-
ÂŁ25 when selling my t-shirt which I feel would
appeal to the most people

Here is a selection of tutorials I would like to use in my production experiments. The
reason I chose these tutorials is because they all show how to create image styles that
I would like to recreate. I chose to pick tutorials on a range of different programs, by
doing this I can further my knowledge of programs I already know how to use and learn
something new with programs I have never used before.

2.
3.
Here I found a tutorial on the website NextShark in which Gab Loste, a Filipino
photographer, took some photographs of his model in front of a neon sign in order to
create some vaporwave style photos.
These settings will mainly only apply for this style in which the lighting is from a neon
sign however this is a style I am considering incorporating into my own product. In order
to achieve the same effect with my own photos it is recommended I follow these
settings:
• F/1.8 or f/1.4 Aperture
• 1/125th Shutter speed
• Low ISO
All of these settings can be achieved with the Canon 600d that is available to hire from
college. In order to reduce costs I will be hiring the camera from college and therefor will
need to take into consideration the limitations of this camera.
As seen below are the specifications of the Canon 600d that are mentioned in this
article.
Photography
In order to achieve the correct exposure for my photographs I have to take into consideration these settings:
Aperture
The aperture controls the amount of light that is let into the lens when taking a photo. This is measured in f-stop values, with the lower
aperture value (e.g. f/2.0) creating a more exposed image and higher aperture value (f/8.0) creating a less exposed image. When
taking photos in a darker environment you would want a higher aperture in order to let as much light in as possible. Aperture also
effects the depth of field in pictures for example a low aperture value
ISO
ISO is simply a camera setting that will brighten or darken your photo, the higher your ISO the brighter your image will be. This does
come with some issues however. For example if you take a photo that has its ISO set too high, you will be left with a photo that has a
lot of grain, usually called noise. To prevent this from happening you should only change your ISO if you are unable to change the
brightness of the image using the shutter speed and aperture.
Shutter speed
Shutter speed is the amount of time the camera shutter is open. The longer the shutter speed the more light is allowed into the camera
lens therefor making the image brighter. The shutter speed also effects the blur of your photos, for example a long shutter speed would
create a lot of motion blur due to the camera shutter being open for a long time and capturing a lot of the image.
Photography
Availability
I will be using a range of locations within my production. The locations I will be using that are public areas will be accessible 24/7 due
to them being alley ways and public footpaths. The locations that are private however have set times in which they are open. The
Sheffield Botanical Gardens are open 8am till 4pm on weekdays and 10am till 4pm on weekends. The Winter Garden in Sheffield is
open 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and is open 8am to 6pm on Sundays.
As for the availability of my model, I will be using my friend Amber Craig. She is free Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The days that are best for me to go out and take pictures are Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday as I’m not at college on these
days.
With all of this taken into consideration, the best times to go out and take pictures would most likely be Tuesday and Friday anytime
between 8am and 4pm for the Botanical Gardens and 8am to 8pm for the Winter Garden.
Location
I am hopefully going to use multiple locations for my
production in order to achieve a variety of different
images. The following places are locations I may
use in my production:
1. Sheffield Winter Garden
2. York Millennium Bridge
3. Manchester Chinatown
4. Sheffield Botanical Garden
1. 2.
3. 4.
These aren’t the only locations I will be
using however. Whilst walking around
these areas I may also find a location
that I feel would make a good vaporwave
photo and I will use them when I find
them.
Cost
Throughout my production there will be things that cost, for example and travel or props.
The largest cost within my production will be the travel costs. Due to me traveling to multiple different cities I will have to work out train
prices for each return journey. I will also have to take into consideration the fact that I wont be going on my own and therefor other
people will also have to match these costs.
I have worked out the cost of trains for 3 weeks in advance from now
• Manchester - £26 return, per person without a rail card
• Sheffield - £13.75 return, per person without a rail card
Any locations that are in York will cost ÂŁ3 for a day bus pass which would give me access to all First busses in York.
The props I may use within my production are mainly props to effect the images such as mirrors and prism. These props will affect
how light reflects into the lens creating different effects within my image. The average cost of a reflective prism is ÂŁ10.
Research Summary
I feel overall my research is at a good standard. The strongest area of my research I feel is the existing product research as I have
explored a range of products that all have a link to what I am wanting to create. For example I have looked at pre existing vaporwave
fanzines for inspiration on front cover designs, t shirt designs to get a good understanding of content that could go in my fanzine and I
looked at aesthetica film magazine which gave me some good ideas on how to lay out a look book style fanzine/magazine. Another
good area of my research is the research I did on existing graphic designers. I feel by researching Aaron Campbell I could get a good
understanding of the quality and style id be expected to produce.
The weakest area of my research however is the audience research in which I created a 10 question survey and sent it to the people
on my course. Due to my fanzine being on quite a niche subject however, not many people knew what vaporwave was and therefor
couldn’t give very valuable answers. I feel if I was to do this area again or add to it I would have a focus group where I would find
people that have a better understanding of the vaporwave genre.

Complete FMP Research

  • 2. Design Studies – Theory and Research in Graphic Design In the section I screenshotted, Ann C. Tyler writes about the importance of considering your audience when creating any piece of visual communication. She goes on to say that the designer creates a piece in order to persuade the audience to adopt a belief. Tyler then goes on to explain the purpose of this persuasion is to accomplish one of the following goals: "To induce the audience to take some action" - an example of this a film poster. The audience will have to of been considered when creating a poster as that who will be watching the film. In this instance taking some action would be going to see the film. "To educate the audience" - an example of this is an infographic. The audience will have needed to be considered for an infographic as you need to be giving the right information to the right people. Based on what Tyler said, to educate an audience you need to persuade them to accept information or data and this can only be done effectively by tailoring your piece of work around the correct audience. "To provide the audience with an experience" - an example of this can be anything visually appealing. The audience will need to be considered when creating a piece of art as the audience is who you are trying to persuade for approval.
  • 3. Basics Graphic Design – Design Research • Primary Research: Examples of primary research I could use in my own research would most likely be surveys, interviews and focus groups. This would be done by peers in my class, friends outside of my class that have an interest or knowledge of the topic and possibly forums relating to the subject. • Secondary Research: Examples of secondary research I could use in my own research would most likely be magazines, encyclopedias, news reports and newspapers. The majority of these will be located online however I could also use libraries in order to collect a wider range of results from my research. • Tertiary Research: I feel tertiary research wouldn’t be the most useful research method for me unless it could also be used as a secondary source of research. Examples of tertiary research however are manuals, guidebooks, fact books and directories.
  • 4. Graphic Designer – Aaron Campbell One graphic designer I chose to research for inspiration was Aaron Campbell. Campbell, based in Vancouver, began his career as a designer and illustrator after first laying his hands on Photoshop in 2007. His portfolio is full of drawings of his signature characters, digital drawings and abstract art. The side of his artwork that I'm most interested in is his vaporwave artwork that he has produced for bands as well as his vaporwave artwork showcase. Campbells vaporwave artwork is something I aspire to create myself, I feel it captures all the conventions you expect to see in a piece of vaporwave artwork. It has the VHS style overlay, bright neon colours, 80's-90's technology and the various glitch effects that can be seen throughout. These are all aspects I will have to include in my own piece in order to achieve a high quality product that fits with the vaporwave theme. Due to Campbells experience I feel it will be a bit of a push to create pieces of the same quality in the given time frame however I feel I can produce multiple pieces that incorporate the same conventions and fit with the theme and style
  • 6. Product 1: Vaporwave Fanzine Front Covers Here I chose to analyse a selection of front covers which I found on the website Issuu. Issuu is a website in which anyone can upload their magazine/fanzines, it ranges from professional pieces from well known companies such as PC Gamer and BBC Good Food to Fanzines made by one person teams and students. I chose to look at 3 front covers from individual creators. Unfortunately all of the fanzines I chose to analyse were in Spanish however this isnt a big issue for me as I am mainly focusing on the designs and artwork with these fanzines. I believe the target audience for these fanzines have quite a range. This is because the microgenre that is vaporwave incorporates aspects from different time periods which would appeal to a range of different people. For example vaporwave, which emerged in the early 2010's on the likes of Reddit and 4chan, would mainly be relevant to teenagers and young people as they are the largest demographic who use these sites. The reason I feel vaporwave might include a larger demographic is because of its nostalgic references such as the frequent inclusion of the N64, Windows 95 and VHS to name a few. These nostalgic references, which are mainly from the 80's and 90's, would mainly appeal to the middle aged audience as it is a callback to their childhood/teenage years.
  • 7. Front Cover 1 – Cult zine vaporwave This front cover is from the Cult zine vaporwave fanzine. It was created by Renzo Novelli who seems to be an individual with no organisation. I tried to locate a portfolio, website or Facebook page in which I could see other pieces however I couldn’t find anything. The fanzine itself is in Spanish however this isn't a problem for me as I am focusing on the design elements and overall aesthetic of the front cover. Straight away you can tell that this is a front cover from a vaporwave fanzine. This is because includes many of the conventions that are seen throughout the vaporwave microgenre. The most noticeable convention is the use of the colour purple and green. These are very common throughout vaporwave artwork as its quite a tranquil colour palette which relates to the tranquil music style that the artwork originated from. Another convention that can be seen is the use of the Greek statue Helios, the God of the Sun in Greek mythology. This statue has become widely recognised as the face of vaporwave artwork due to its use in the cover of Macintosh Plus – Florral Shoppe (2011) which established a blueprint for the genre.
  • 8. Front Cover 1 – Cult zine vaporwave Here I split the front cover of the Cult zine vaporwave fanzine into 3 sections. Section 1: This can be seen at the top left of the front cover and is treated as somewhat of a brand mark for the fanzine . The font that has been used is a sans serif font which is common throughout headings and titles. The word cult has been put on 2 lines and enclosed in a square and has the word zine, which is also in a sans serif font, overlapping the square in a different colour text. This overlapping of 2 different colours gives an abstract look to the front cover as well as a bit of a glitch effect due to the colours green and purple being opposite colours. This glitch effect is popular with vaporwave designs. Section 2: This is the main focal point of the front cover with the main image being a sketch style image of the statue of Helios. There is then another picture of the Helios statue behind it with a lowered opacity to give a blurred effect. There is also a deep purple circle toward the top right of the statue. The background to the image is a green box however the statue is not fully enclosed in this box. This gives the effect of an abstract piece. There is a lot of overlapping aspects to this section and a lot of the images are effected by one another when they overlap. I believe this overlapping is done to create a sense of distortion which is common within vaporwave artwork as it represents the distorted effect that is heard throughout the music. Section 3: The final section is the masthead of the fanzine which again is a sans serif font. This is a slightly different font to the one used at the top of the front cover due to it having more of an 80's feel to it 3. 1. 2.
  • 9. Front Cover 2 – Vaporwave This front cover is from the Vaporwave fanzine. It was created by agafaz who seems to be an individual with no organisation. I tried to locate a portfolio, website or Facebook page in which I could see other pieces however I couldn’t find anything. The fanzine itself is in Spanish however this isn't a problem for me as I am focusing on the design elements and overall aesthetic of the front cover. This front cover is slightly different to the previous front cover however it still has the characteristics of a vaporwave front cover. This front cover is more a collage of nostalgic stickers. The use of the Greek statue, windows 95 UI, palm trees and classic computer is what gives this front cover its vaporwave feel. The glitch effect used on the 'Vaporwave' text is also a common convention in vaporwave artwork. The pixel glitch style used in the title is similar to something found on a classical games console or computer which is something commonly associated with vaporwave.
  • 10. Front Cover 2 – Vaporwave Here I split the front cover of the Vaporwave fanzine into 3 sections. Section 1: This can be seen at the top of the front cover and is seen as the masthead for the fanzine. The font is a sans serif font however it is heavily pixelated to give it a sense of nostalgia which is a common theme within vaporwave artwork. There is also a glitch effect that has been added to the masthead by having 2 more layers of the word vaporwave however they are in the colours green and purple. The reason green and purple have been used is because they are opposite colours on the colour wheel and also because thy are very common colours within the vaporwave art style. The Japanese lettering is also in a sans serif font. I feel the Japanese lettering is only there for aesthetics and the readers aren't expected to know what it means. Section 2: This is the middle section of the front cover and has quite a lot going on. There is a lot of individual images together for this section. The paint window which looks like its from an early 2000's PC is very common in vaporwave due to the frequent use/reference to old Microsoft operating systems such as Windows 95. Another image that is worth pointing out is the use of the Helios statue which has become the 'face of vaporwave' in some peoples eyes. The use of a large pink stroke around the edge of the image gives it the effect of a sticker on the page. The palm trees, in my opinion, have been added to add to the tranquil feel which again is common within vaporwave art. Section 3: The final section can be seen right at the bottom of the front page and shows the Windows 95 task bar. I feel by having this task bar it gives the feeling that you are looking at this front cover on a computer, which is where the vaporwave genre grew from. It also references Windows 95 which is a very common theme used throughout vaporwave art because of its nostalgia. 1. 3. 2.
  • 11. Front Cover 3 – A InfluĂŞncia do Design no Vaporwave This front cover is from the A InfluĂŞncia do Design no Vaporwave fanzine. It was created by a user of the same name. The creator seems to be an individual with no organisation. I tried to locate a portfolio, website or Facebook page in which I could see other pieces however I couldn’t find anything. The fanzine itself is in Spanish however this isnt a problem for me as I am focusing on the design elements and overall aesthetic of the front cover. This front cover incorporates aspects from both of the previous front covers. It has the pastel, neon background which changes gradient across the cover similar to the background on the first front cover. The use of sticker-like images such as the dolphin and palm tree are similar to the ones seen in the second front cover. Another recurring image is the Helios Greek statue. The lettering that is in Japanese is also very common throughout vaporwave artwork. This is because vaporwave incorporates many aspects of other cultures in its artwork. Some consider vaporwave to be the first truly global aesthetic because of its focus on various other cultures.
  • 12. Front Cover 3 – A InfluĂŞncia do Design no Vaporwave Here I split the front cover of the A InfluĂŞncia do Design no Vaporwave fanzine into 2 sections. Section 1: This can be seen at the top of the front cover. Both fonts are sans serif fonts however the top font has a lot more of a rounded feel to it and gives the effect of neon strips which I think adds to the vaporwave theme. The pixelated font also adds to this theme by giving the feeling of nostalgia due to the pixelated style. Section 2: This is the main section of the front cover and has separate images all added together to create a vaporwave collage for the front cover. The main focus of this section is the large Helios statue that has been distorted. This distortion adds to the vaporwave effect due to it being quite abstract. The other images that are very common within vaporwave art, is the dolphin, rainbow doughnut and palm tree. All of these have been used as they give a feeling of tranquility which is one of the main themes within vaporwave art. The Japanese writing is not meant to be translated and is used purely for aesthetics. The white square background is also very popular within vaporwave art. 1. 2.
  • 13. Product 1 – Vaporwave Fanzine Front Covers Here I have used the website Adobe Color in order to breakdown the main colours used in these front covers. By doing this I can clearly see which colours are used the most in order to gain an understanding of which colours I could use in my own artwork. The colours that are used the most is purple, blue and green. These colours are used because they represent tranquility which is the overall theme of the vaporwave genre. These colours have also been used due to their link to the 80's and 90's. In this time period neon colours were very popular and were used in fashion, commercials, movies and tech etc. And due to vaporwave getting a lot of inspiration from this time period the colours have become a part of the genre. All of these front covers contain bright pastel colours because of the association with tropical and neon styles.
  • 14. Product 2: Vaporwave Merchandise Here is a selection of clothing from the online store Vapor95. Vapor95 sells a wide range of clothes all in the vaporwave style. They boast a range of jumpers, t-shirts, hats, hoodies, bottoms and accessories. The designs range from full art pieces that has artwork all over the clothing (sunset jumper at the top right) to print work. I will be focusing on the print merchandise as this is the style I would like to create for my own product. I feel the target audience for this clothing is teenager/young adults as this is the most popular demographic for vaporwave music and art. To further support this, all of the models showcasing the clothing all fit into this demographic which would suggest teenagers/young adults are the most likely to buy these products.
  • 15. Vapor95 Clothing – 88 MPH Long Sleeve Tee This long sleeve tee is for sale on the website vapor95 retailing at $39.95. The print design is 100% unique to the Vapor95 store and will be what I'm focusing on as I would like to create my own print design in a similar style. The design they have used for the tee is picture of the modified DeLorean from the Back to the Future series. The reason this has been used in vaporwave art is because of its nostalgic feel. Within vaporwave art there is a lot of refences to the 80's and 90's and due to Back to the Future being released in 1985 this is why it has been used. The palm trees seen in this print are very common within vaporwave artwork as they represent tranquility, which is a running theme within the genre. The neon purple colour that has been used throughout is also very common as purple is very heavily associated with vaporwave art. The reason for this is in the 80's and 90's colours such as pink and purple were used a lot in fashion, design and art and due to vaporwave being linked to the 80's and 90's they have incorporated this into their art style.
  • 16. Vapor95 Clothing – Faux Visage Sweatshirt This sweatshirt is for sale on the website vapor95 retailing at $46.75. The print design is 100% unqiue to the Vapor95 store and will be what im focusing on as I would like to create my own print design in a similar style. The design that has been used for this sweatshirt uses a very popular style in the vaporwave community. Where some images gace 1 main focus, images like these have multiple subjects and show off more of a collage of smaller images. The statue used in this print is very common within the vaporwave genre as statues were common decoration pieces for rich people in the 80's. Another reason the statue has been used is because of the popular song Florral Shoppe, which had the Helios statue on the cover, springboarded the vaporwave genre. The dolphins used on the print represent tranquility which is a very popular theme within the vaporwave genre. The final area of this print is the classic style PC that can be seen in the bottom right of the image. This is a reference to the nostalgia commonly used in vaporwave artwork.
  • 17. Product 3: Aesthetica Magazine Here is chose a professional art and culture magazine called Aesthetica. It is a bi- monthly magazine that features a range of art from film, visual art, music, architecture and performance. The reason I chose this magazine is because this will have a similar design layout to what I hope to create with my fanzine. The main content for this magazine is showcasing art and photogrpahy which is very similar to the content I will be having in my own fanzine. By looking at something that has been created by a professional company I can get a good understanding of the quality expected from an established company. By taking this into consideration, I hope to find a good balance between the quality of a professional magazine and the niche style of a fanzine.
  • 18. Aesthetica Magazine – Double Page Spread Here I selected 2 different double page spreads from the Aesthetica magazine. Both of these double page spreads show a main image wit very little text. I will have multiple pages like this in my fanzine. This is because I will be using my fanzine to showcase artwork instead of writing informative pieces on the vaporwave genre, however I will feature some articles to break up the artwork. Despite the subject of the images not being the same as mine I am still going to analyse the layout and other aspects that could be applied to my own product. Screenshot 1 shows a single image stretched over a double page spread. The image is off centre slightly and has a greyed out box to the left with a small amount of information regarding the image. I feel by having this image not fully stretch over the double page spread, it gives a more creative feel. This is a layout option I will most likely use within my own fanzine as it is unconventional which is something that is common with vaporwave arwork. I may also consider including the grey strip as it gives me a space to write a bit about the imagr, however I don’t think I'll use grey as it wont fit well with the colours used in the image. The border around the image is also something I will use in my fanzine as it gives room for page numbers and any other text. Screenshot 2 shows a double page spread of 2 photo's of a similar style however they are separate images. I really like this idea for a double page spread as it gives the feeling of a double page spread however the images are different giving variation to the page. This is something I will most likely use within my own fanzine. 1. 2.
  • 20. Survey Summary Observation: This question is simply to identify the difference in males and females who took this survey and could potentially view my final product. What this says about my audience: These results show that there is a majority of males at 59% to the 41% females. How will your product appeal to this audience: I feel these results will have very little effect on my final product. This is because the content that will be in my fanzine wont be gender specific at all. This is due to the vaporwave art style not really appealing to one gender more than the other. The only aspect I feel these results will have any impact on is for the t-shirt I am wanting to create. By seeing there is more males I feel this will lead me to create a t-shirt that is mainly for males however I will try to make it as unisex as possible.
  • 21. Survey Summary Observation: This question shows the age range of people that completed the survey. These results were expected with 18-20 being the most common answer. This is due to me giving my peers the survey as well as friends on Facebook who nearly all fall under the 18-20 range. What this says about my audience: This shows the most common age range 15-20 which is expected however I will still incorporate nostalgic aspects within my work as this is an important convention within the vaporwave genre. How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this audience by including all the main vaporwave genre conventions such as nostalgic references, neon-pastel colours, tranquil feel and the effects used in the artwork. By following these conventions I will appeal to this audience as this is the most common age range within fans of vaporwave.
  • 22. Survey Summary Observation: This question gives me a good understanding of how may people read magazines in comparison to not reading magazines. It also gives me a good understanding of how frequently I should release my fanzine in order to appeal to the most people. What this says about my audience: It shows the majority of my audience don’t read magazines/fanzines however those that do will most likely read one every month or once every 6 months. How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this audience by having monthly releases of my fanzine as I feel this is a good median. I will also make my product appeal more to this audience by releasing the fanzine online as I feel people are more likely to read an online copy of the fanzine instead of physical copy.
  • 23. Survey Summary Observation: This question shows clearly that the majority prefer to use online means in order to get information instead of using physical means. This is due to technology becoming more readily available to everyone and the ease of use that comes with technology. What this says about my audience: My audience is much more inclined to use online means in order to view information and news. How will your product appeal to this audience: Despite me making a fanzine which will be a physical piece I will be uploading it online to website such as Issuu in order to appeal to the majority of my audience.
  • 24. Survey Summary Observation: That only 37% have heard of vaporwave as opposed to the 63% who haven't. This shows that my content is very niche. The 63% who haven't heard of vaporwave will still have useful answers however as the majority of my following questions don’t have to be applied to the vaporwave genre. What this says about my audience: It shows the majority aren't familiar with the vaporwave genre however this is expected due to it being a niche subject area. How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this audience by creating visually appealing art that falls under the vaporwave genre however I will try to make it so you don’t have to have an understanding of the genre to appreciate the art.
  • 25. Survey Summary Observation: This shows that the most selected areas within the vaporwave genre is the music and overall aesthetic. Art and fashion are also popular however there are very little interested in the vaporwave movement What this says about my audience: That my audience are very interested in the music and overall aesthetic of the vaporwave genre. They are also fairly interested in the art and fashion How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to my audience by having a heavy focus on the overall vaporwave aesthetic throughout my fanzine. As for music which was the most popular option, I may have a section of my fanzine dedicated to vaporwave music. This will most likely be done by creating album artwork for a musician.
  • 26. Survey Summary Observation: This shows that the vast majority of my audience are more interested in shorter articles over longer articles. What this says about my audience: This shows that my audience prefer shorter and informative pieces. This is most likely due to my audience being mainly teenagers and young adults who frequently read information in shorter forms How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this audience by having short pieces of information. This will be easy to do as my fanzine is a look book of artwork which means that it wont have a lot of text
  • 27. Survey Summary Observation: This shows that there is a fairly even split between those who would and wouldn’t buy vaporwave inspired clothing What this says about my audience: That my audience is split between purchasing vaporwave clothing. This is most likely due to the majority of my audience not knowing about vaporwave however it is important to note that more people would consider wearing vaporwave inspired clothing than people who have heard about vaporwave. How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to my audience by designing a piece of vaporwave clothing. Based of the results seen on this survey, half of my audience would be interested in purchasing vaporwave clothing and therefor could be interested in my clothing design
  • 28. Survey Summary Observation: The most popular feature is music at 70% with fashion and artwork showcases at 54% and 50%. The least popular features were the history of vaporwave and reviews. Again this is most likely due to vaporwave being a niche genre and the history of vaporwave and reviews would only be relevant to people who are interested in the genre What this says about my audience: This says that my audience are into the visual area of vaporwave and mainly focus on the aesthetic. This is because the most popular features are all showcases How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to my audience by making my fanzine a look book which will be used to showcase artwork and fashion. I may also include a section that showcases albums which will appeal to the 70% who selected music
  • 29. Survey Summary Observation: The average price that someone would pay for a vaporwave print t-shirt is ÂŁ22 What this says about my audience: This shows that my audience would expect a vaporwave print t-shirt would be a similar price to a standard t-shirt from an established retailer such as urban outfitters How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to my audience by creating a vaporwave print t-shirt that costs somewhere around ÂŁ22. I will most likely stick within the ÂŁ20- ÂŁ25 when selling my t-shirt which I feel would appeal to the most people

The reason I chose these tutorials is because they all show how to create image styles that I would like to recreate. I chose to pick tutorials on a range of different programs, by doing this I can further my knowledge of programs I already know how to use and learn something new with programs I have never used before. 1. 2. 3.
  • 32. Here I found a tutorial on the website NextShark in which Gab Loste, a Filipino photographer, took some photographs of his model in front of a neon sign in order to create some vaporwave style photos. These settings will mainly only apply for this style in which the lighting is from a neon sign however this is a style I am considering incorporating into my own product. In order to achieve the same effect with my own photos it is recommended I follow these settings: • F/1.8 or f/1.4 Aperture • 1/125th Shutter speed • Low ISO All of these settings can be achieved with the Canon 600d that is available to hire from college. In order to reduce costs I will be hiring the camera from college and therefor will need to take into consideration the limitations of this camera. As seen below are the specifications of the Canon 600d that are mentioned in this article. Photography
  • 33. In order to achieve the correct exposure for my photographs I have to take into consideration these settings: Aperture The aperture controls the amount of light that is let into the lens when taking a photo. This is measured in f-stop values, with the lower aperture value (e.g. f/2.0) creating a more exposed image and higher aperture value (f/8.0) creating a less exposed image. When taking photos in a darker environment you would want a higher aperture in order to let as much light in as possible. Aperture also effects the depth of field in pictures for example a low aperture value ISO ISO is simply a camera setting that will brighten or darken your photo, the higher your ISO the brighter your image will be. This does come with some issues however. For example if you take a photo that has its ISO set too high, you will be left with a photo that has a lot of grain, usually called noise. To prevent this from happening you should only change your ISO if you are unable to change the brightness of the image using the shutter speed and aperture. Shutter speed Shutter speed is the amount of time the camera shutter is open. The longer the shutter speed the more light is allowed into the camera lens therefor making the image brighter. The shutter speed also effects the blur of your photos, for example a long shutter speed would create a lot of motion blur due to the camera shutter being open for a long time and capturing a lot of the image. • 34. Availability I will be using a range of locations within my production. The locations I will be using that are public areas will be accessible 24/7 due to them being alley ways and public footpaths. The locations that are private however have set times in which they are open. The Sheffield Botanical Gardens are open 8am till 4pm on weekdays and 10am till 4pm on weekends. The Winter Garden in Sheffield is open 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and is open 8am to 6pm on Sundays. As for the availability of my model, I will be using my friend Amber Craig. She is free Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The days that are best for me to go out and take pictures are Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday as I’m not at college on these days. With all of this taken into consideration, the best times to go out and take pictures would most likely be Tuesday and Friday anytime between 8am and 4pm for the Botanical Gardens and 8am to 8pm for the Winter Garden.
  • 35. Location I am hopefully going to use multiple locations for my production in order to achieve a variety of different images. The following places are locations I may use in my production: 1. Sheffield Winter Garden 2. York Millennium Bridge 3. Manchester Chinatown 4. Sheffield Botanical Garden 1. 2. 3. 4. These aren’t the only locations I will be using however. Whilst walking around these areas I may also find a location that I feel would make a good vaporwave photo and I will use them when I find them.
  • 36. Cost Throughout my production there will be things that cost, for example and travel or props. The largest cost within my production will be the travel costs. Due to me traveling to multiple different cities I will have to work out train prices for each return journey. I will also have to take into consideration the fact that I wont be going on my own and therefor other people will also have to match these costs. I have worked out the cost of trains for 3 weeks in advance from now • Manchester - ÂŁ26 return, per person without a rail card • Sheffield - ÂŁ13.75 return, per person without a rail card Any locations that are in York will cost ÂŁ3 for a day bus pass which would give me access to all First busses in York. The props I may use within my production are mainly props to effect the images such as mirrors and prism. These props will affect how light reflects into the lens creating different effects within my image. The average cost of a reflective prism is ÂŁ10.
  • 37. Research Summary I feel overall my research is at a good standard. The strongest area of my research I feel is the existing product research as I have explored a range of products that all have a link to what I am wanting to create. For example I have looked at pre existing vaporwave fanzines for inspiration on front cover designs, t shirt designs to get a good understanding of content that could go in my fanzine and I looked at aesthetica film magazine which gave me some good ideas on how to lay out a look book style fanzine/magazine. Another good area of my research is the research I did on existing graphic designers. I feel by researching Aaron Campbell I could get a good understanding of the quality and style id be expected to produce. The weakest area of my research however is the audience research in which I created a 10 question survey and sent it to the people on my course. Due to my fanzine being on quite a niche subject however, not many people knew what vaporwave was and therefor couldn’t give very valuable answers. I feel if I was to do this area again or add to it I would have a focus group where I would find people that have a better understanding of the vaporwave genre.
