Student Name and Number:
Jack Fraser Ward 343055
Project proposal title and date:
Vaporwave Fanzine
Main area of activity:
The main medium I will focus on for this project is graphic design, as I will be creating multiple
pieces of artwork in the vaporwave style. I will most likely also be incorporating photography into
this project, as I would like to create all my pieces on my own and not use someone else’s stock
photo.
Rationale:
Throughout the 2 years on the creative media course I have acquired a range of technical skills
using software such as Photoshop, which will assist me in creating the artwork for my project. I
have also acquired skills in using hardware such as cameras, tripods and the studio. With this
knowledge I will be able to produce high quality photographs for me to edit in order to create the
artwork for my project. Another set of skills I have acquired throughout this course is
communication skills, which comes in the form of working with a team and taking constructive
criticism and feedback for my work. For this project my team working skills will allow me to
organise photography shoots and be able to produce high quality work in a set time frame. The
communication skills I have acquired throughout this course will allow me to evaluate my work as I
create it and get feedback from teachers and my peers in order to create the highest quality work
possible. Previous projects I have done of a similar style to this is the fanzine project we did at the
beginning of year 2 as well as the magazine I produced in year 1 for my FMP.
Project Concept:
The concept of my project is to create 2 fanzine issues consisting of approximately 12 pages,
adverts to go in my fanzine and possibly a t-shirt design that will feature in my fanzine. The
fanzines will be for anyone interested in the vaporwave style/genre or anything similar such as
cyberpunk and glitch art. My inspirations for this project are musicians who create vaporwave
music such as Blank Banshee and Home. Another inspiration is the Swedish musician Yung Lean
who has somewhat become a poster boy for the vaporwave art style with him featuring on multiple
pieces of vaporwave art style. My inspiration for the artwork itself comes from artists such as
Aaron Campbell who creates digital art as a freelance designer. Other inspiration comes from the
likes of reddit and Facebook in which people create loads of designs of varying quality. To gather
research for this topic I will take knowledge I already have on the topic and build onto this using a
range of different sources. These sources will most likely be portfolios of artists, reddit and
Facebook pages to get inspiration for my own pieces. To create my project, I will be mainly using
Photoshop as it is a program I understand and is widely used by others creating artwork of the
same style. I will also be taking my own photographs that will feature throughout my fanzine.
Despite being very interested in the vaporwave genre, I have created very little in terms of artwork.
Therefore, I will have to find tutorials on how to achieve certain effects and create certain things. I
will most likely find tutorial on YouTube as I feel I work best with visual aids.

How will the project be evaluated and reviewed?
For my evaluation I will be doing peer feedback within the classroom as well as with friends
outside of the class. By evaluating with my peers, I will be able to get people’s opinions on the
design aspect. The reason I will be focusing on a design aspect is because my peers may not
know that much about vaporwave as a topic and therefore could not evaluate the content, however
due to being in a class with creative media students, they will be able to evaluate the design of my
product with a good understanding of what makes a good fanzine. To get a good overall evaluation
for my product in terms of content and design I will upload my product to the likes of Facebook and
reddit in vaporwave groups where the users have a good understanding of the topic and will also
most likely have a level of understanding in terms of design. To help with the evaluation I will most
likely create a survey for people to fill out for everyone as well as focus groups and interviews with
my peers in my class. As for ongoing evaluation I will be completing weekly development diaries
for my planning and research as well as a daily development diary for each day of production. This
self-evaluation will help with time management and being able to take highlight areas I am
struggling in so I can improve on this in the next lesson.
