12. Academic History
• During school I studied a variety of subjects chosen by myself which
included media studies, design and technology, physical education and
history; by choosing these subjects it allowed me to express my creativity
and expand on it as much as I could've, which prepared me for college
where I chose a level 3 vocational creative media course. During
secondary school in my media studies class, I made a variety of products
specifically magazine front covers, double page spreads and contents
pages; the magazines varied from fashion magazines to film magazines, so
it allowed my creativity to reach its potential at the time, however I
wanted to take media further at York College to really progress with the
work that I was already enjoying. The thing that really persuaded me to
take media further than GCSE was the freedom you have by making
something unique and experiencing working independently and working
in teams. This was because I got a true taste of how I could express my
creativity and how I could not only use that in my independent work, but
how I could also share it with students in my group.
13. Current Study
• My current course that I am studying at York College is an Extended Diploma in Creative Media
Production and Technology, and this course has helped me massively in choosing what course I
want to do at University as it has brought out my creative side more than I thought it would by
making me think about what I am making, and making me improve my work all the time, so it
can be the best it can possibly be. In this course I have made a music video to the song Morning
Glory by Oasis, which taught me how to do the basics of editing in Adobe Premier Pro, and it
also gave me a little taster of directing various models on what to do, and made me more
organised as I had to plan for anything to go wrong. Creating this product made me want to
progress and study further as I enjoyed making a project unique to me, and really expressing my
creative side and I enjoyed learning a new software to add to my skillset as I love learning new
things to add to my bank of skills. Another product I made was an animation on Pixilart where I
had to design a game based on a storyline I created in the genre of adventure, and it taught me
the basics of animation and how I have to be dedicated to the project to get the most out of it;
this made me want to study further because even though I didn’t particularly enjoy it I still
completed it to a merit grade level, and it made me prove to myself that I am truly motivated to
complete the task at hand to a good level. The final product I made was for my FMP where I
created a magazine featuring a front cover, contents page, two double page spreads and an
advert; I used Adobe Photoshop to edit my products to look like a magazine, and I used various
different apps to edit my photos to give them a 90s feel to them since that was the genre of my
fashion magazine. This project made me want to progress further as I really enjoyed having
freedom on what to plan, design and produce.
14. The Future
• For the future I would want to stay in the
media industry, and speficically either music
or fashion as I have the most interest in these
subjects in the media industry, so by doing a
course related to these areas of the industry it
will not only help me decide which of the two
avenues I want to go down, but it will also
help me overall as it will give me knowledge to
go far in the media industry and an insight on
what the industry has to offer.
15. Outside College
• Outside of college I currently have two part time jobs
that I juggle between my college days and social hours.
My two jobs are as a waiter at a hotel near the city
centre throughout the week and working at Tesco on
weekends. This makes me a better candiate for
university study as it shows I am dedicated to my task
at hand, and prioritise work over socialising, which is
essential when trying to do my best to get a degree in
my desired course. In terms of socialising I play football
for one of my local sunday league teams and have been
doing since a very young age, and I enjoy spending
time with my mates whether that’s enjoying a drink or
exploring different cities.
16. Conclusion
• The main reasons for me wanting to go to
university is to carry on my education further
than higher education as I feel like it will help me
in the long term, and I want to broaden my
knowledge of the media industry as that is what I
want to study in. I am an excellent candidate for
university as I am determined to complete any
task I am challenged with, and college has also
helped me with my organisational skills, which
will be key for university.
