In today’s advert-focused world it has never been so important for companies to introduce their products into peoples’
busy lives. By taking a short walk down a city street, it is impossible ignore the constant barrage which is modern
advertising. There is a product or service for everything, and competition is unavoidable which is why both media and
design is crucial for survival. This is what fascinates me and fuels my interest for the subject because I believe that powerful
adverts have powerful effects.
This was first sparked during the beginning of my course as I was tasked with creating an advertising campaign for Irn Bru.
This led to me studying advertising for my end project, particularly looking at high-end luxury watches. I found this to be a
very captivating subject, not only for the demographic but because of the competitive nature of the market. For these
adverts to have an effect they needed to use specific imagery to target the percentage of those in the market for their
products. These watches are shown to be the pinnacle of artistry and craftsmanship as well as symbols of power and
wealth which leads to customers parting with hundreds of thousands in order to gain that status.
I created my own adverts using powerful imagery: bright, shiny watches in a dark and murky environment; or compared
with fast planes set against a backdrop of rolling hills. With each advert came a slogan of empowering words that
would resonate with the demographic. To create the actual watches, I was able to create photo-realistic images with
Photoshop. By doing this I could make the exact products for my adverts.
Prior to this I had made a magazine cover and article based around the subject of motoring which I also found captivating
because of the way that they are specifically targeted towards demographics. This was where most of my Photoshop skills
developed from as I became familiar with the software. This also gave me opportunity to develop my photography and
photo manipulation skills.
I have always taken an interest outside of education into creative works such as art and graphics, and even
animation, which is what I would like to pursue at university. Having studied both art and design technology at school and
product design at sixth form I have developed a passion for sketching and rendering. I have even begun to take my skills
from my current course to produce work for clients outside of college. I have worked for two local businesses in order to
create adverts for them. Graphic design is something that I find comfortable doing and would very much like to continue in
a career.
In my spare time I work at a local shop and café which has also given me opportunities to work on their website. I am
also an avid fencer (not the wooden type) and have volunteered and helped with my local Park Run.
I am looking forward to university life and am excited for the opportunities that it will provide me. I am most anticipating
the coursework as I enjoy a challenge.
