Hello, today I will be showcasing my vaporwave fanzine and the processes it took to create it. To start off, vaporwave is a sub genre
that emerged in the early 2010’s, it emerged from online communities such as Turntable.fm. The images associated with vaporwave
includes Ancient Greek sculptures, 2000 web design, glitch art and outmoded computer renderings.
I will now show you all the steps it took to create my fanzine and why I made these choices.
Here we have the front cover to my fanzine. I wanted this to feature a lot of well-known vaporwave graphics and colours. As you
can see, I have opted to have the whole front cover feature the main colour scheme of vaporwave which is blue and pink. I then
decided to have the main focus of the front cover be the Helios Statue bust which is possibly the most common vaporwave graphic
out there and is recognized by all vaporwave fans.
Next is my contents page which has the Arizona Waterfall image on the right and the contents page on the left. I feel the Arizona
Waterfall image looks very good with the matching colours and vaporwave imagery, such as the dolphins and Arizona cans. On the
contents page I again decided to include the Helios statue with the background being a marble effect I made using the liquify tool.
Here is a simpler page with a background that is very common in vaporwave art. Due to vaporwave taking inspiration from the 80’s
and 90’s, I did the same by using the grid that is in the style of the 1982 film Tron. The focus of this image is the text which uses the
Road Rage font in pink and the Plateia font in chrome.
The photo I used on this page was taken by me in Sheffield Botanical Gardens. I then edited the image in Lightroom to change the
colours of the image to suit the vaporwave style more. A further edit I made to the image was in the style of a classic VHS which is a
common vaporwave style. The font I used for this image is the VCR OSD as this is the most authentic VHS font available.
This image gives the effect that it is taken from the desktop of a computer with the taskbar and file icons. This is another common
vaporwave theme with the 2000 web design. The focus of this image is the paint window which features Jack with paint drips
coming down from his eyes and mouth. This was effect was created using the liquify tool.

Here I used another 2 images from the Sheffield Botanical Gardens. As with before I edited both images in lightroom to make them
fit the vaporwave theme more. The focus of this image is the strong purple hue that is given off from the pictures. Both pictures
were put side by side on my double page spread with a light green border to contrast the purple.
Using the classic windows background screensaver I began creating this image. The background was edited in Lightroom to give
the purple sky and bright green grass. The palm trees are from the render option in photoshop. The final thing worth noting is the
windows 95 logo which has had a glitch effect added to it. These are both very common within vaporwave artwork.
Now I will be showing you on3 of my favourite pieces which is the Nebula Doorway piece. Here I created the whole background
from scratch and then added it to the picture of Amber standing in the doorway of the Sheffield Botanical Gardens. To make the
piece look more genuine I applied a purple hue overlay to the whole image.
Again, using the pictures taken in Sheffield I began editing both on Lightroom in order to achieve a very similar effect to the first
nature edits I did. If I was to edit these images again, I would make sure I’m using the exact same values for all pictures as I feel
this would make the images fit better. I again used the light green border to contrast the purple.
Here I used another picture from Sheffield which I again edited in lightroom for the purple hue. As with before I edited it in the style
of a VHS tape using the same font as before. To create the waves of distortion at the bottom and the top of the image I used the
shear tool which gave the effect of a ripple or tear in the tape
The final page I created was the back cover. This is a very simplistic page with only 2 graphics on it. It has the marble column which
links back to the Ancient Greek sculptures and the classic Macintosh Computer. All with the same background colour as the front
cover which links the 2 pages.
And now as you can see this is what the entirety of my fanzine looks like as you are flicking through it. If you have any questions,
please feel free to ask.

5. Presentation Document – How I Presented It
As seen in the previous slide, I used Adobe Premiere in order to create my
presentation. I have included all my finished art works in the presentation as
well as the process I used to create them. I have used a range of different
effects in this presentation in order to make it interesting for the views. I used
cross fades to transition the processes as it gives the effect of elements
fading in to create the finished image. I will be adding royalty free music over
the presentation. The music I have chosen is Zai Kowen – Bay City which is a
song that comes from the vaporwave genre. I feel this will fit very well with the
theme of my presentation. The music will be quite faint however as I will be
adding my own voice track over it in which I will be explaining the processes
of creating the fanzine as well as why I made the creative choices. The
reason I have chosen to record a voice over instead of presenting it in front of
the class is because I get quite nervous with public speaking and by pre
recording and editing my voice I can make sure I say exactly what I need to
say as well as making sure it falls under the 5 minute limit.
6. Presentation Document – Instagram Account
Here I created an Instagram account in which I can showcase my fanzine and any other
artwork I create that could possibly feature in other issues of my fanzine. I chose
Instagram to showcase my artwork because I feel at this time it is the most popular
image sharing social media platform. I have noticed that whilst using a range of different
social media platforms such as Facebook and Snapchat I have found that Instagram is
the most popular with my peers. This supports why I chose to upload my work to
Instagram as the target audience for my Vaporwave Fanzine is a very similar age to
myself.
I chose to link my complete fanzine, on Issuu, in the bio of my Instagram account as this
will increase the amount of views my fanzine will receive. I also feel it is necessary to link
the Issuu page as this shows the images in online fanzine form instead of individual
images on an Instagram account.
The final reason I chose to use Instagram is because of the layout of the site. Due to my
fanzine being more of a look book/artwork showcase I feel the layout suits this a lot
better. Despite my finished piece being a fanzine, each page can be treated as its own
piece of artwork and by using Instagram I can have all the images laid out on the main
page of my account where you can see them all together and then click on specific ones
you would like to focus on in its entirety.
A good way to get a wider reach through my Instagram account would be to use
hashtags on my posts as well as follow other graphic designers and vaporwave pages.
7. Presentation Document – Professional Context
I uploaded my work to DeviantArt as this site is an online
artwork and photography community. By uploading my
work here I can get feedback from other creators and
people who appreciate photography and artwork. As
appose to uploading my work to Facebook where I have a
range of different people that may interact with my work,
not all of them will have an appreciation for art. Whereas
with DeviantArt all the users are there for the same
reasons, to get their artwork online, follow artists they like
and give and receive feedback on a range of different
artworks.
By using DeviantArt I know that the favourites and Llama
badges are from fellow artists and it feels like much more
genuine feedback and praise.
8. Presentation Document – Professional Context
I also uploaded my work to Reddit because it is a
content rating and discussion website. Reddit is split
into a vast array of different user created boards
called sub reddits. I chose to upload some of my
artwork to the r/VaporwaveArt sub reddit. This is a
sub reddit that will only feature vaporwave artwork.
It is frequently checked by admins to assure that
only vaporwave artwork is being uploaded to it. By
uploading my artwork here I knew Id be getting
feedback from other users who appreciate
vaporwave artwork and I knew that if my work
stayed on the sub reddit and wasn’t removed it
would be recongised as vaporwave artwork.
Reddit also has a up and down voting system. If
people like it they can upvote it and if people don’t
they can down vote it. All the pieces I uploaded got
positive upvotes which would suggest I have
created pieces that not only fit the genre but that
also look good.
9. Presentation Document – Professional Context
Here I uploaded my work to Issuu which is an
electronic publishing platform. I did this for multiple
reasons.
One reason being because as my research shows,
most people the same age as my target audience
prefer using online sources to view information. By
uploading to Issuu I can still keep my work in the
form of a fanzine as this showcased my work best
whilst keeping it online as this seems to be the most
popular form of media within my target audience.
The second reason is because when creating a
fanzine that will be printed out, you must take page
bleed into consideration however with Issuu I don’t
lose any quality to my image and it looks exactly
how I made it when its in photoshop or printed out.
10. Presentation Document – Show Preparation
For my show I intend on printing out all my pieces of artwork and sticking
them on white poster board. If possible, I hope to use 3 poster boards
where the centre board has a brief description about what the vaporwave
genre is and the other 2 boards either side are showcasing my work.
I hope to have either my laptop or one of the college macs just in front of
the middle poster board in which I will have my fanzine on Issuu which will
allow people to flick through it at their own pace as well as look at the
individual pieces that will be behind on the poster boards.
Also on the centre board I will have instructions on how to flick through the
fanzine on Issuu as I may not always be by my laptop to help people. I will
try find a program that allows me to lock my screen to whatever it is on, so
people don’t accidentally flick off the fanzine.
This is the kind of display layout I hope to use in
the show. I will have my artwork along the left
and right side as well as a few in the middle and
then the instructions on how to work the laptop
as well as a brief description about what
vaporwave is will be along the middle.
I will have either my laptop or a college mac just
in front of the middle board so people can view
my fanzine.
I’m hoping for quite a minimalistic way to present
my work as the images I have created are quite
busy as they are and don’t want to have too
much going on that it distracts from the images.
