The document provides an evaluation by Aasiyah Chopdat of her research, planning, time management, technical qualities, aesthetic qualities, and audience appeal for her magazine project. Some key points made include: her research lacked analysis of double page spreads which caused issues in layout; planning went smoothly but more attention to fonts was needed; photos were taken last minute without enough editing time; the magazine cover could have been improved with the model centered and use of cover lines; double page spreads and pull quotes may have been better designed; and the target audience of 16-25 year olds was effectively appealed to through creative, colorful design and relevant content.
2. Research
• For my research I analysed around 3 different genres of magazine, from
fashion, to film and food. This was really helpful because it helped me to
get an see all the different styles of magazines.
• By analysing magazines I was able to see how editors design their
magazines to attract their target audience, magazines like little white lies
had a very different deign then vegan life.
• However I think my research was lacking in analysis on double page
spreads. When it came to making my magazine I struggled with how I was
going to layout my double pages, if I had done more research and analysis
on this area this could have been avoided.
3. Planning
• My planning went pretty smoothly. At the start I came up with 3 different
ideas, and decided to go with fashion. Making a mind map was really
helpful as it showed my brand idea really clearly and helped me to get an
idea for what my magazine was going to be like.
• Creating a mood bored made the magazine visually come to life and made
the branding more clear. Through designing my magazine I kept going back
to the mood board to get inspiration or to remind myself of the brand I
was trying to create.
• However I didn't pay much attention to fonts. I should have planned out
what kind of fonts I wanted to use. This would have made my final product
look a lot more put together.
4. Time Management
• At the begging I think I managed my time pretty well started out by taking
my main photos which was important since I would find it difficult to
design the pages without them. I put enough time into editing and layout
my pages so that they looked up to standard.
• However I realised later on that I needed more photos, and taking them
last minuet. I still had time to properly edit them, however if I had taken
them earlier I believe I would have been able to pick better picture for
different pages.
• With additional time I think I would have spent more time on the front
cover and picking out fonts. My front cover didn't turn out the way I
envisioned it.
5. Technical Qualities-front cover
1. Model takes up centre of the page which is visually
good for a front cover. On my cover the model
leans over to the side which doesn't look as good
on a cover. If I had picked a picture where she's
more towards the centre it would have looked a
lot better
2. Because I wanted my magazine to be more on the
artistic side I wanted to refrain from using cover
lines, as magazines that inspired me had also done
that, however I think it would of made my cover
look a lot more like a magazine cover. On the
magazine cover on the left the cover lines make
the page look more balances, without them it
would probably look quite empty
3. Both cover have the titles behind the model. I
think this is a clever trick and makes the cover look
more interesting and professional.
4. Most cover picture are taken in a studio. This is
another thing I did differently. I think my cover
would have looked more professional if my picture
was taken in a studio.
6. 1. Both of the double page spreads use columns for their article. For a magazine this
looks better .
2. My article has a lot more pull quotes then the other one. I think by doing this I
made the pull quotes maybe stand out less.
3. I like how the article on the right has a clear colour scheme, it make the page look
put together. I think I could have done better with my colour scheme as there isn't
really a clear one. I took colours from the picture on the page, it might of been
better to stick to one colour.
4. The placements of my picture could have also been a bit better. Looking at it now
it looks a little messy compared to the other double page spread. Even though this
was the look I was going for, I think I could have placed the photos better so that it
looked visually better.
8. Model isn't in the
centre on the page,
this make the cover
look visually odd. I
think it would have
looked better with a
picture of the model
in the centre
Blue pole in the
background is too
prominent and makes
the photo look to
fussy and confusing
The title is bold and
colourful. This fits with
the brand I'm trying to
create. I like how the
outline is a different
colour rather than black.
I like how I but the title
repeated on the border,
as its different from
other magazine and
also fits with the brand
I'm trying to create.
Border helps
picture look
more defined
There's too
much going
on, it look
confusing.
9. I think I should have spent
more time picking out font.
Clean layout, this page doesn't
look fussy or confusing which I
think looks visually good
Having the article
set up in columns
looks visually
appealing to the
viewer
The picture put
on this page no
with each other
The pull quotes are bold and
colourful, again matches my
brand. I quite like the design of
it, however I think I could have
used a better font for them
10. The main focus for
this age was the
photo, I liked this
and though its
looked visually good.
I edited the photo
and paint on blue
stars. This sort of
design was what I
was going for, I think
it looks quite
different and artistic
On this page I carried on the star design I
had put on the picture. I think the stars
should have been bigger/the same size as
on the picture.
The angle of the
picture is visually
appealing . The colour
scheme also is quite
good
Again I think
the layout is
visually
appealing .
I don't like the font I chose, it
looks visually unappealing and
out of place against the rest of
the page
11. I used lorem ipsum
as a fake quote
I like how I edited the
picture and think it
was pretty creative.
I like how the layout turned out
on this page. Its supposed to
look bold and visually good
which I think I achieved
I made sure that
there was a good
colour scheme. All
the colours go with
each other making
the page look even
better.
12. I wanted the back
page to be the
opposite of the
front page, so I took
the design(the
repeated title) from
the front page and
edited it in
Photoshop and
made it part of the
background of this
photo.
Again the model in
photo isn't in the
centre which make
the page look kind
of confusing.
I decided to change the
colour of the words to
match the photo(did this
by taking the colours
from the picture).
I think the back page
visually looks ok. It
defiantly isn't as bold as
the front page which is ok
since its the back page.
13. Audience Appeal
My target audience for this magazine are people aged 16 to 25
(students). I wanted my brand to break the norms, be visually good and
creative
To target my audience I made sure that my magazine was bright an
colourful, giving it a young and youthful feel. Because I was targeting a
creative young audience I wanted to have some pages that were there
just for visual purposes which is why I had this page
When it comes to content I wrote an article on the
reasons why fashion is/ isn't important. this was
pretty good article as it touches on many issues such
as climate change and mental health which are all
relevant and relatable topics to my target audience
