Lily created a film magazine called "Director's Cut" for a school project. She did research on magazine formats and created a production schedule. Her final magazine included a front cover, contents page, and double page article spread. Throughout the magazine she maintained a consistent black and white color scheme and logo. While she was happy with how the magazine turned out overall, she notes some areas for improvement like using a bolder font for titles and adding page numbers.
2. For this unit we had to create any type of production that
we wanted e.g. a short film, music video, magazine,
cartoon etc.
I decided to create a film magazine because I thought that
this would be fun to make and I could create a good final
piece.
I decided that for the genre of my magazine I would pick
film. I then had to come up with a name. I came up with a
few ideas but I decided to pick Directors Cut because the
name ties in with the genre and its short but easy to
remember and quite catchy.
Unit 21:
5. First of all I researched different magazine covers and company's. This helped
to inspire my own magazine and give me some initial ideas of what could go in
my magazine and what it might look like. After this I created my production
schedule, a front cover sketch, outlines of what articles may be included,
locations, personnel to be used and any equipment I would need. This helped
to start making a draft of my magazine and what I would be doing for it. The
next stage was to go through important things like clearances, copyright,
health and safety, legal and ethical and codes of practice. These are important
to research and know about because it gives an idea of what professional
magazines have to do before they actually publish their magazine. After
completing this I went on to creating ‘Directors Cut’.

6. Finished product
-Initial idea
-final product
I think with my final product I have followed my
sketch very well. I have placed everything from
my sketch onto my final front cover. For example
I have used the same title, articles included
inside, a puff etc. I like the way my magazine has
turned out. I have followed a colour scheme
throughout which Is black and white. This makes
my magazine look more professional. I have also
used the same font type and colour. This would
help readers recognize the magazine by the
colours and text. I also think that my target
audience is suitable, I was aiming it at film fans,
any gender, aged 15-30. The magazine isn’t to
formal/ informal so it targets for a young adults.
7. For my front cover I like how it has
turned out. I think it looks
professional and it will stand out. The
bright coloured puff helps to make
the magazine stand out because the
‘pop of colour’ against the black and
white colour scheme. To improve this
I think I could of used a bolder font
because I found that the font that I
used looked creative and different
however, for the title of the
magazine I should of used a font that
stands out more. But I found that this
text type was my favourite from the
Photoshop fonts.
8. I think my contents page has turned out
really well. I had to change it a few times
to finally get it to look like this, But I
think doing that has really improved it.
Having more detail added to what’s on
each page makes it look more
professional and there is more to read
on the page now. Adding a background
image shows what is featured in the
magazine as well as having it written on
the side, it also makes it look more
interesting. To improve my contents
maybe adding more information about
the magazine on the page to make it
look more realistic.
9. Throughout my magazine I have followed the colour scheme and included and clipper board at the top of each
page like a sort of logo for the magazine, readers will recognize this. I really like how my double page spread has
turned out. I have layed it out like a real magazine would and added a few pictures with statements on them to
make it look more intriguing for the readers. To improve it I think I should of again used a bolder font for the title,
however using the same font throughout the magazine is more professional because then the text will be
recognizable for usual readers. Including interviews into my article also makes the magazine more realistic. If I was
going to create another double page on this article I would of included more information so that the readers will
understand more about it, but at the end of the article I have stated that there is more information/ interviews on
the “website”.
10. Overall I think my magazine was very successful, I think it looks appealing and follows my
target audience. It wasn’t rushed due to my production schedule helping, so it doesn’t have
anything missing that I needed to add or look messy. I think the ideas that I came up with were
developed very well. Advantages with my magazine is the way it looks and has been layed out
e.g. the colour scheme following the whole way through, layout of my double page spread
how it looks like a real magazine. Disadvantages would be the font used. I needed to have a
bolder font so that the titles stand out from the text. Also I forgot to add page numbers to my
actual magazine, which makes my magazine a little less realistic.
If I was to do this again I would improve my disadvantages to make my magazine as best as I
could and so that its easier for the readers to read and spot out key information e.g. the title.
Also adding other pages would be a nice idea but it would take up more time.
