2. Practical and Technical Problems and Solutions
Mind Map
Practical and Technical
Equipment:
- Camera
- Tripod
- Camera Light
- Shotgun Microphone
- Portable Audio Recorder
- Headphones
- Batteries
- Light Reflector
This is a simple list of the
equipment that will be used when
filming the short film for the FMP.
Techniques:
- Research
- Development
Small list of techniques used
when creating the short film.
Storage
- USB
- E-mail
- One-Drive
A list of storage
locations for saved
files
Power:
- Camera batteries
- Charging laptop
Small list of items that are linked to the
equipment’s battery life that is relevant to the
project.
Ability:
- Camera usage
- Using Editing Software
(Premiere/Photoshop)
Basic list of practical skills linked to my ability
that may be seen as a problem due to my lack
of knowledge in both of these areas.
Software:
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft Word
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Premiere
List of the software that I will be using when
researching and developing ideas, creating the
short film.
Brief solutions to
these would be to be
careful with the
equipment and to
check to make sure
that it works before
use.
The general problems
with the equipment is
if it is damaged or
does not work in
general.
A general issue with storage is
corrupted files and inability to
access the storage device for
whatever reason e.g. losing
memory stick.
A quick solution to this would be to
backup the files into multiple
places should either of these
problems pop up. If they do then
you can use the same file from a
different place.
The general
issues with these
are loss of data
and a lack of
research/develo
pment.
A brief solution would be to make
sure that the ideas are developed
fully and every possible scenario is
accounted for.
The general issues with
Software is that it may not be
available at home or it may
crash. Another issue with the
software is that it may it may
corrupt files if a different
version of the software is
used.
A solution to this would be to
use the editing software while at
college and spend more time at
home using PowerPoint and
Word as I have access to both of
those at home whereas I don’t
have Photoshop or Premiere at
home due to the limitations on
my laptop
The General Problems with my ability of camera
usage is my lack of understanding of how the
camera works. This is linked to how often I use
cameras which isn’t a lot. Not being able to
understand some of the tools in Premiere and
Photoshop also come across as a problem
A solution to these problems would be to study more
camera and editing techniques before filming or
editing to help build my confidence in both of these
areas. Practicing during the experimental phase
would also be very helpful.
The more obvious problems with
equipment that has a battery life
involve how the battery can run
out which prevents the usage of
the equipment entirely.
Solutions to this problem
include making sure that it
is fully charged before use
and bringing extra
batteries or a charging
cable as extra backup.
3. Theoretical Problems and Solutions
Mind Map
Theoretical
Filming Outside and
Unwanted Noise
Crew Dynamics
Transport
Locations
Finance
Toilet Facilities
Refreshment:
- Food
- Drink
Items needed for refreshment
Production Time
Job Roles:
- Director
- Cameraman
- Sound design
- Editing
- Cast
Small list of potential job
roles while filming.
Rain and bad
weather can effect
the mood that I am
trying to portray,
wind can effect the
sound scape,
outsiders can disrupt
shoots and cause a
commotion ,the sun
can effect the
lighting on the
camera.
Solutions to these problems
include. Thoroughly checking
the weather forecast before
filming to make sure the
weather won’t be a problem,
filming on a day that isn’t
windy, using sound
equipment that negates this
problem, don’t film during
interruption or ask them to
leave, make sure to film
facing away from the sun or
during a time of day when
the sun isn’t a problem.
Actors and Extras
The
problems
with actors
and extras is
that they can
reschedule,
Can’t play
role,
Improvisatio
n done badly,
personality
can make
them difficult
Solutions to this
include having
multiple actors on
standby, have a small
audition for the
roles, question their
ability to improvise
and tell them to stop,
meet them before
hand to get a feel for
their
personality/audition.
The problems with
Crew dynamics include
how well they work
together or if they
agree with each other.
Some one that can’t
pick up sound design
very well can ruin the
production etc.
The solutions with the crew
dynamics is to make sure
that everyone is doing
something they can do. Have
the crew be comprised of
people that are friends or
get a long in some way.
The Problems
with job roles
are that some
of the
individuals
responsible
with each role
may reschedule
or can’t turn up.
The solution to this
would be to bring
some more people
along who can
perform these roles
in case the original
crew can’t make it.
The
problems
with the
locations
for the
production
include not
being able
to access
the location
due to
booking
issues, if
the location
has closed
and if the
location
isn’t
available on
the day.
The solutions
to these
problems is
to book in
advance if
possible.
Book
multiple
places that
are within
walking
distance and
try to book a
day where it
isn’t busy or
unavailable.
The problem with
refreshment is that it can
be quite expensive to
provide for the entire crew
especially when an entire
meal is put into
consideration. This could
also contradict health and
safety regulations.
The solution to this would be to either
have everyone bring their own food or
money and supply drinks instead.
Another alternative would be to try and
film mid afternoon or mid morning to
prevent the need for food. Only eat and
drink when away from equipment or
while on break to avoid damage to the
equipment.
The problems with
finance is just the
budget. First I
need to see how
much money is
even possible to
accumulate and
also see how
much all the props
are. Not only do I
have to worry
about these two
problems, I also
have to worry
about food I may
be buying for not
only myself, but
for others too.
The solutions to this
stem from my ability
to save money
either by not
spending it or by
trying to go for
cheaper props and
make-up. Food itself
should only really be
a concern for myself
and I would ask the
rest if the crew to
bring their own
money and lunch
though it may be
something that I
have to account for
just in case.
Toilet Facilities
may be a bit of
an issue as it
mainly comes
down to
whatever
location was
booked should
the location
have any toilet
facilities.
If the
location has
no toilet
facilities then
it would be
better to
record close
to public
toilets in case
the toilet is
required
An example a
problem with
production time
is that it can take
too long to make
or I may run my
production time
down due to
much by
spending my
time trying to get
both planning
and research
finished.
This problem can be solve fairly
easily by making sure that I am on
time with my research and planning
and getting every thing finished
before production starts.
An example of problems with transport is
that it may be costly for some people to get
to the film set-links with Finance. Transport
may breakdown entirely.
A solution to this problem is to make sure
that people are ok with the distance traveled
and that they can afford it. If there are
problems then a standby replacement would
be fine.
