2. Why I am Problem
Solving.
• Problem solving is a crucial part of the planning of a project, it allows you to be prepared for
the worst case scenario and if anything happens to go wrong. When there is an issue that is
out of your control it can cause the project to lack quality, consistency or worst case scenario
it can ultimately cause the project to end and not be able to be finished. Working out
possible problems and creating solutions and backup plans allows you to be prepared for
when these issues occur and will allow you to have plans in place which will help to keep the
quality of your work high and help keep it all consistent. It is also a very useful way to
determine what areas of the project I am not 100% confident on and need to try out before
hand, in result helping me to plan out needed experiments for me to do before I start the
actual filming of the project. There are two types of problems that I need to solve and plan
for if they become present. Theoretical and Practical.
3. Theoretical
• Theoretical issues are that of such have a potential of occurring, they are not things that are
guaranteed to happen but have a potential. This could include a range of things such as
issues regarding people, health and safety or something as simple as the weather on the day
of the proposed shoot.
Practical
• Practical issues are that which affect the practicality of the project and will consist of issues
that regard the equipment. This can be anything from the techniques used to the storage,
editing power and software of the computers which are of access.
4. Issue Effect it will cause How I’ll fix it
Contributors Cancel Will either force me to change plans and set
up dates or will mean I lose an interview or
two.
(depends on how many cancel)
Rearranging the plans or just try on the day to
find other possible interviews.
Weather Damage to equipment and possible seize of
filming for the day.
Covers and Weather protection (e.g,
umbrellas )
Storage Issues No storage will result in video footage not
being collected or not all footage being
collected
Keep extra storage devices on hand and check
how much is left before
Outdated Software This can cause issues as several effects that I
plan to use may not be accessible as well as it
being slow and much harder to use
Make sure all software is to the highest
version that it can be. Limiting myself to
effects and styles I know the computer is able
to handle would also help as I’ve planned for
what I am capable to do
Not able to book equipment My plan for what I want to film will drastically
change as I will only be able to film from one
angle and wont have the preferred camera I
want to use as well as no microphone
I will just have to use my phone for the other
angles and as a microphone
Contingency Plan
5. Issues revolving around
People.
• The main issue that will occur whilst working with people is the likelihood of them cancelling last
minute or having some issue where they can no longer take part in the product. Not only is the
initial planning extremely difficult trying to fit all the different parts together, but trying to keep
all the dates possible and everyone happy becomes a larger ordeal especially while trying to plot
and date several different life’s. People dropping out can make the ultimately end the project
and cause a complete reschedule of events, however if we were only to lose 1 or 2 potential
interviewees it would be possible to work around this
• Solution
To try my best to prevent any complications with other people I will make sure my plan is
finalised completely well before the set date, I will also make sure that all interviewees
and contributors are well informed before time. Another way In which I plan to prevent
this becoming an issue is to have plenty of potential contributors lined up, it is always
better to have more footage than what I need rather than less.
Theoretical
6. Issues revolving around
Lighting.
• My main issue with the lighting will be my shots that are in areas that are natural. I want to get a
series of shots and some interview points in their natural working areas, so this would consist
around the stadium and surrounding area. These areas are mostly lit by natural light which
comes from the open top stadium; however it is a night game then the lighting with be synthetic
with lights surrounding the stadium and the big flood lights at the top. Even then the overall
control of the lighting is mostly out of my grasp and I will be unable to change and control this so
I will have to find ways to work with and around this.
• Solution
My only solution is to try and catch the light in the best possible ways in this area. Other
than that most footage will be in a controlled space where I will be able to control the
lighting. My plan is to use a 3 point lighting system as this is the most impactful for
interviews as I believe it creates the best possible shot.
Practical
7. Issues revolving around
Weather.
• The main issue that will come about with weather is the potential damage to equipment and the
risk of using it whilst raining or worse. Hopefully by planning ahead we will be able to know
what the reported weather condition is for this and judge accordingly what and how we will go
about this. As we are unable to control or prevent any change in weather we will have to do our
best to work in and around these knockbacks.
• Solution
The plan to combat any issues regarding rainfall will be to pack and have ways in which
we can shelter and protect the cameras whether this is as simple as just finding some
sheltered area to film from or even aiming to move most of the shoot in doors
somewhere. The other option is to have covers for the cameras to help prevent any water
seeping into the interior of the camera and causing water damage. This could ruin footage
or even potentially terminate the entire camera.
Theoretical
8. Issues revolving around
Travelling.
• Travel is a huge part of this project as my proposed idea for the location of the shoot is away
from York. Not being able to travel here would ultimately ruin the project as I wouldn’t be able
to film the project that I have intended to.
• Solution
The only solution I can think of is just rescheduling and reshooting. Hope that I am
aware of the inability to be able to travel to the destination well before time and have
that time to be able to re plan how we go about the shoot.
Theoretical
9. Issues revolving around
a Potential Lockdown.
• With Cases rising and the complete annihilation of any sort of safety measures or protocols,
there is every likelihood of another lockdown being put into place.
• Solution
The only real solution would be to host interviews through zoom calls
Theoretical
10. Issues revolving around
Post / Editing
• The main issue regarding the post production and the editing of the project will be avoiding file
corruption, saving and making sure files are on onedrive and there are backups. Saving and
making sure there are backups and that everything Is in the correct place seems like a very easy
task but it can often be overlooked. This could cause setbacks and potentially make you fall
behind when work is lost or even worse corrupted.
• Solution
• Making sure to keep up to date with regular saves and regular backups. I will also have
spare backups on computers at home as well as one drive.
Practical
11. Issues revolving around
Mechanical Malfunctions.
• Camera and Equipment malfunctions – The main way in which I can prevent the likelihood of this
is by testing the cameras and equipment before hand and making sure it all works fine. – The
issues it could potentially cause is the camera ruining the project as it wouldn’t be able to film
any of the footage, other equipment not working like lighting or mics would not be the end of
the project only a huge drop in quality of the work. – Ways to fix this would just to try and
improve any work that has been affected in post.
Practical
12. Experiment Plans
• The main experiment which I plan to try is rotoscoping. This is the process of drawing over the footage to
create an animated type outline around images or people. This can be used to highlight, define or add extra
images onto a video
• For my first attempt I just used a stock video of a dove and created a superman style laser beam stemming
from the doves eyes. This gave me a brief feel of how it worked but it was only a first attempt as I wanted to
draw over something which was my own footage
• For my practice I used a video of Stephen and attempted to create an anime type ball of energy forming in
his hands. This was to just try and get a grip with what rotoscoping was and out it worked. It helped me
understand how to create what appears to be movement and creating the animation process. However due
to my lack of artistic capabilities I don’t think this is something I can happily bring into my FMP and make it
into something which looks acceptable or professional
