2. PROBLEM SOLVING
• In this PowerPoint I will explain the problems I could face in this FMP and my
experiments. With my FMP being mainly a video project, there are lots of
problems and restrictions I could face, so I will make note of what effect these
issues could have on my project and how I could solve them, this includes;
technical, creative problems and I will display these issues in a contingency
plan and in several lists of each section in more detail. This will help me
because I can analyse what problems have occurred in the past and how I can
prevent them from causing issues in this project.
3. CONTINGENCY PLAN (TECHNICAL)
Potential problem that could happen Effect on my production How I will control it
Equipment breaking, this could be
from weather or breaking them by
accident.
Delay filming and the production
process, meaning I could be behind on
work and deadlines. Also, could
increase my budget if I need new
equipment.
I will keep all my equipment safe
especially if it is bad weather and use it
correctly.
Losing work, this could be from losing
storage, corrupted files or not saving.
Retyping my work up again and
delaying my work meaning I could be
behind taking focus away from
my current work.
Always save my work and use online
version of Word and PowerPoint
because it autosaves.
Software crashing, this could also be
internet / Wi-Fi issues on the
computers. This is software that I need
for my FMP including, Photoshop,
Premiere Pro, Word, PowerPoint etc.
Delaying my production and getting rid
of any work I've done.
Continue to save my work all the time.
Working at home and being absent in
college, this could be if I get ill or have
too self-isolate.
The work may not be up to usual
standard if I am doing while ill off
college, and especially because I don't
have Adobe Creative Cloud at home, so
I will need alternatives.
Save my work on my OneDrive incase I
need to work at home.
4. CONTINGENCY PLAN (LOGISTICAL)
Potential problem that could happen Effect on my production How I will control it
Transport issues, there might not be
anyone able to give a lift to someone,
or a bus or train that isn't available
Filming will have to be rescheduled, or
the area may have to be changed
Organise transport days before for
everyone
Weather issues Bad weather meaning we may not be
able to film, so we will be delayed
Check the weather online several days
before so we don't have to change the
day
Covid restrictions, if we can't get
together because of a lockdown or
restrictions
Crew members could be limited on
their role
There currently isn't any covid
restrictions so we should be alright if
we all test negative
Area being unavailable Different areas will have to be used Always check if it is available to film
there during pre-production
5. CONTINGENCY PLAN (PEOPLE)
Potential problem that could happen Effect on my production How I will control it
Transport unavailability, and they
can't find a way to get to a certain
place
It could delay my production. Help organise transport for them.
Disagreements if crew members have
different ideas.
It could change up ideas from
planning or not have certain scenes if
people don't want to do it.
Sort it out and maybe propose an
alternative idea.
Unavailable on some days, therefore
planning a date could be hard.
It will be delayed so we can organise a
date where everybody is available.
Organise a different date that is
suitable for everybody.
People getting ill and having to cancel The production will either be delayed,
or we might have to change or delete
certain shots of what is needed with
them
Make sure they are feeling ok and
decide if we do a different day.
7. • Equipment – I will need to write a list of the equipment I need to use in my
planning pre-production PowerPoint and make sure I can get all of this
before production starts, I will also need to make sure that I keep all my
equipment safe so I don't lose it as this could be a big problem. If this
problem happens I will need to buy a new one which will affect my budget
or I will have to work around it and use an alternative, for example, if I lost
my camera, or it breaks, I will have to purchase a new one or use my phone
or a different device to film my documentary. To prevent this problem from
happening I will keep them all safe while filming in a protected bag that I
can carry around to prevent weather from breaking it.
8. • Storage - My FMP is important, and it is all saved online on my
OneDrive, I save my work in a folder called 'FMP Year 2' so it can
be organised. I will make sure my work is organised and always saved and
backed up online, and also make sure I don't run out of storage otherwise I'd
need to delete other work from previous projects. A potential problem is
that my storage could be full, or I save my work in a wrong place to so I can't
find it, otherwise I'd have to rewrite my work or buy more storage. To stop
this problem from happening I will always save my work in the same folder
and usually use Microsoft Office online, because it always saves
automatically
9. • Software – I have used Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, PremierePro) and
Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint etc) in every project in this course, so I am
experienced in them and know how to edit and create my work. However, using
these software's sometimes can cause potential problems or it might not work how
you want it to. A problem is the software crashing or going down and you can't use
it, this will affect my work a lot meaning I can't write or edit my work, so to solve
this problem I will always need to save my work online and use the online versions
on the York College Microsoft Office on Word and PowerPoint because it saves
automatically to my OneDrive, and also save while on production on my work so if I
use the wrong tool or accidentally delete part of my work, I can undo it and try
again.
10. • Backing Up – I always need to back up my work, similar to how I
talked about earlier, it would help if my work autosaves online,
therefore it would always be backed up as long as I click 'save as'
for my work and put it in the correct FMP Year 2 folder on my
OneDrive. One potential problem that could be caused is if my files
get corrupted or my OneDrive is down, which effects my work
meaning I might have to re-type it all up or try save it
11. • Working outside of college – When working on my FMP, I will also
do filming outside of college as well as finishing off work and
adding extra detail, however I am slightly more limited at home as
to what I can make, because I don't have an Adobe Creative Cloud
or Microsoft Office subscription, however I do have access to the
online versions of Word and PowerPoint therefore I could use this
when I need to outside of college. This is a potential issue and has
an effect on my production because I'll need to do all my editing in
college, but I can overcome this problem by doing extra work
during extra hours in college if I need to on the computers, and
also to focus during lesson times to get all my work done.
13. • Filming outside - I will be filming my documentary outside in different areas
around Yorkshire, this means I will take all my equipment with me, however
there could be several problems like the weather, this could affect my time
schedule by delaying my filming, and it could also break my equipment,
therefore to overcome this problem I will put all my equipment in a safe bag
like what I stated earlier, and also make sure to check the weather the day
before filming to see if I need to reschedule it as soon as possible because I
can't have too many delays. Also, another potential problem is the pandemic,
as there isn't many restrictions at the moment of planning my FMP, there still
could be people self-isolating or testing positive which will have a negative
effect on my schedule as well, because I might need to push back filming, so I
will need to make sure we film it in a safe spot.
14. • Actors / Crew – In my project I won't be having many other actors or crew
because my topic doesn't involve other people to be in it, therefore this could
reduce the number of potential problems, however if I do need somebody to
help, some issues could be: the crew not getting along, or people not being
able to do certain days and times for filming. This could have a very negative
effect on my production because it could cause setbacks to my work and not
allow me to film certain scenes or shots I want. I could solve this problem by
like I said, not having many other crew members involved in the filming
production part of my project. This connotes I will focus on the work myself
so I know what I will need to do.
15. • Transport – As I am filming this project in different areas in Yorkshire, it is
fairly local, as I am based in Norton, Malton I will have to travel to different
areas to film, but this can cause many problems. Different methods of
transport I could use is driving, using my car as I am learning to drive, using a
bus or train especially if it is to places like York or Scarborough. Some
potential problems of this could be accidents on the road, as this can always
be a potential issue, traffic or road closures, these can always be issues on the
road which could lead to the effect of delaying my filming, not being able to
meet any crew members if there is any. This can also mean I will need to
consider this for my budget, for bus / train tickets and especially for petrol in
my car, as of right now the prices are a lot higher for this so I will definitely
need to consider this. To solve this issue I will make sure I consider this in my
budget and plan my route ahead so I will travel in the right direction and be
where I need to be.
16. • Locations – As I said before, the locations used in my project will be in
different areas around Yorkshire, so there are lots of potential issues I need to
consider before I start my filming there. One problem is the amount of people
there, as I will be filming, I will need to make sure the area isn't heavily
populated at the time of filming because otherwise I would need their
permission in they are in the background of the shot, and my documentary
will be more focused on the areas, not the people. Another potential problem
is the locations being closed due to weather or any other related problems.
These could affect me and my project because I will need to check in my
planning if I can visit there or film there, otherwise I'd have to change it and it
could affect my pre-production planning as I'd have to change it. To solve this
problem, I will plan well ahead and confirm that everywhere is available
17. • Finance / Budget – A budget is very important in projects like these because
I'll need to buy several products for this FMP, including camera, drone, travel
money, etc. A potential setback for this is not having enough or planning a
much lower than I'd need, or this could affect me because I'd need to spend
more money on products. To solve this problem, I will make sure I keep all my
equipment safe that I buy, and make sure they all work, or it could make it
budget higher, and I will save up money and plan everything I need to spend
in my budget and buy everything well before I start my production.
18. • Time Management – Time management can definitely cause problems and
something I have dealt with in the past. A problem with this is not meeting
deadlines and not getting feedback on my work, this is a problem all the way
through my project after every part I do, I hand in my work on teams to get
feedback and improve, this could affect me in a bad way meaning I might not
get a good enough grade. Another problem is it could lead to me being
behind on work, and not handing it in on time, another effect is it could lead
to my work being less organised as it might be rushed. I will avoid these
problems by making sure I always do my work in lessons and outside of
lessons to if I am behind to catch up and do any feedback and put it all on my
website in good time before the deadlines.
19. • Health and Safety – This is important with my project as there are lots of
parts I need to consider. A major problem of this is anyone getting hurt or not
following health and safety rules, this could affect me and my project because
I may need time off college if this happens. To solve this problem, I will need
to keep safe and always look where I am going
20. ISSUES ON PREVIOUS PROJECTS AND HOW I SOLVED
THEM
• On previous projects there has been several issues including time
management, equipment and motivation. Time management problems
before have been not handing in deadlines and especially rushing my work,
however recently in this project I have handed in all my work on time or
before. This changed because I have been working on this to improve so I can
get feedback for my FMP, handing the documents in on Teams assignments.
Sometimes I have not used lots of equipment and used a phone to film
without tripods etc, however now I will use a camera and a tripod for most
shots, and also do drone shots too, so this is new equipment that I will get
used to and experiment with. For this project, I have been motivated to do
well as it is my FMP, however in previous projects I have struggled to add
extra detail, but now I have improved and kept working on my project.
22. EXPERIMENT 1 PLAN
• For my first experiment, I will experiment with uses of my camera that I will
be using for this project and testing out different camera angles and settings
with it. I will get all of this footage I record and put it together in Premiere
Pro and edit it for my 3rd experiment. This will help because in my
previous project I have just used a phone to record, and now I will be using a
camera so I will need to get used to it. My camera I am using is a Canon EOS
1200d and this is my first time using it, so it will be good experience for me to
do this just to practice and experiment with the filming, different settings,
etc.
23. EXPERIMENT 1 – CAMERA
First of all, I am borrowing this camera from a family member so I can use it for as long as I like with
this FMP, it is a Canon EOS 1200d and I filmed different shots in my garden to practice using it at first,
including long shots, panoramas, close ups, POV shots, etc. Also, with different focus shots like
shallow focus on objects, with the background blurred, these will be the most common shots in my
project which is why I experimented with them After I filmed these, I took the SD card out of the
bottom of my camera and inserted in my MacBook and pasted all the video clips onto my desktop,
then onto my OneDrive so I can access it on the computers in college. I made a new folder 'FMP Year
2 Experiments' to put my work in so I can keep it organised and not get my video clips mixed up.
OneDrive folder Shallow focus shot example
24. EXPERIMENT 2 PLAN
• For this experiment, I will be using my drone attached with a camera I bought
for filming in this project. This is completely new equipment for me, I have
never used a drone except for flying a small one when I was younger, and I will
need to use the camera too, which is the most important part as I am using
this to get good video shots. I made sure you can record videos on it when I
bought it on amazon.
25. EXPERIMENT 2 – DRONE
• I set up this drone and downloaded the app on my phone to record videos and use the camera
effectively, you fly the drone and connect your phone to the drone through the app and press record
on your phone when you want to take photos or videos. I started by flying it around in
my garden and recording so I can get used to it, but it took a while because it was quite fast and
sensitive. A few setbacks I realised is that when in the sun, the camera lighting changes and becomes
too bright and it is lagging sometimes while recording. This can be solved though if I slow down the
speed on the drone and maybe slow down the speed of the video in Premiere Pro too so it
doesn’t look as slow otherwise it would look quite unprofessional. However, aside from this, I got
used to flying the drone and using it, so I am ready to start using it for my production.
26. EXPERIMENT 3 PLAN
• For this experiment, I want to use the footage from my last experiments to
edit in Premiere Pro. I need to do this because I haven't used Premiere
Pro since last year's FMP. This will help me gain more experience on this
software and getting used to it again and using editing effects and useful skills
to make my project better.
27. EXPERIMENT 3 – PREMIERE PRO (CAMERA CLIPS)
Firstly, I got all of the camera practice clips from OneDrive and downloaded them all to my college computer and put them all
onto my Premiere Pro timeline in chronological order from when they were filmed. After this, I changed the order to put the
different clips in order of the shot angle, so it starts off with clips that were a bit blurry until zoomed in on the close ups, and
then it changes to where I fixed it to make the shot less blurry. After this I started adding effects in like dip the black or dip to
white which is what I have seen before lots in films or documentaries. Then I went and used the 'typewriter' text effect to
show the location and time in the bottom left corner, which is something I want to include in my project to help the audience
understand where abouts it is. This means as the clip goes on, a new letter gets revealed every 0.2 seconds, so the text
gradually gets typed on screen. Mainly, this experiment was to practice with putting clips into Premiere Pro and editing them.
