Fmp year 2 Problem Solving
1. FMP Year 2 Problem Solving
Harry Adkins-Pennington
2. Mind Map-Practical and Technical
Problems
I created a mind map for the
different technicalproblems that
may occur during production
and what the solutionscould be
for those problems.
For each set of boxes I chose a
different colour, so the reader
understandswhat each
problem/solution ispart of their
specific set.
The blue boxes are the subjects
of the problems, the red boxes
are the problems themselves
and the yellow boxes are the
solutionsto those problems; I
have chosen to not havemuch
detailfor the mind map because
I want to make a table that will
go into more detailon the
different problemsthat may
occur and even describe the
impacts both the problem and
solutionwill have on my project.
3. Mind Map-Theoretical
Problems
I chose to do a mind map on the
theoreticalproblems of my
project because it allowsme to
give a general idea of what
problemscould occur during
productionand what the
solutionscould be.
The keys for the boxes are the
same as the first mind map
because it helpsme remember
what the problemsand the
solutionsare; it also makes it
easier to organise the whole mind
map so everything is legible
4. Potential Problems and Solutions
Problem Affect on my production Solution The implications
The location I will
be filming at
might be too dark
to record
If the lighting doesn't match what I require
for my scene then the shot will look
unprofessional and the whole project will
badly suffer from it.
If I am outside, then my crew and I will
have to wait until the lighting matches
what I require; if I am in the studio, I will
have to change the lights, by either
changing the brightness of the lights
and/or moving them around slightly to
match what I need for the scene
This will mean we spend
more time making sure the
lighting matches what is
required for the scene which
is a small inconvenience for
my team will make the project
take longer to produce
Certain crew
members like
actors and/or
cameramen
might not show
up on the day(s)
of recording
I will need my crew so if someone doesn't
show up then the recording will have to be
delayed until everyone is available which
will just waste time and resources.
I will have to rearrange another time to
film the scene which will be a large
inconvenience for both me and my team.
To reduce the chance of this happening, I
will always make sure that my team is
always available on the days of
recording
This will be a big
inconvenience on myself and
the crew members that
originally made it to the first
time of recording
I might lose my
USB stick, or the
files inside the
stick may get
corrupted
I will end up losing everything that was on
the USB stick so if I had most or all of my
recordings on it, I would end up having to
re-record everything which will be a
massive inconvenience for both me and
my whole team as we would have to
record everything again
Backup all of my data to multiple USB
sticks and OneDrive so then even if I
lose access to the internet or lose a USB
stick, I still have all of my data and don't
need to restart the whole production
section
I will have to spend slightly
more time backing up
everything to multiple USB
sticks, but it should not take
too long to back everything
up
5. Potential Problems and Solutions
Problem? Affect on my production Solution The implications
When I am recording outside, it
might start pouring it down with
rain which could damage the
equipment, change the lighting
and flood the area we are
recording
It will cause the lighting to get worse
and soak the area in water. The rain
may also damage the equipment so if
it starts raining, we'll have to get
inside and delay the production until
the rain has stopped and the area is
dry. The rain could also damage the
equipment as well
Before the day of shooting, I will
check the forecast to make sure
that it shouldn't rain on the day of
recording, If it does end up raining,
I'll get my team inside and delay
the project until it has stopped
raining and the area is dry
Re-arranging the day of
shooting will make the
project take longer to
produce due to having to
delay recording
There might be a lot of
background noise that the
microphone picks up from
things like wind and traffic when
I am recording footage outside,
causing the noise to appear in
the video
It will be harder to hear what the
characters are saying which would
confuse my audience and make the
whole video sound less professional
Use an external microphone and
aim it near the speaking actor so
that the mic picks up less of the
background noise and more of
what the actor is saying
This would mean having
one of my team members
carry the microphone and
hold it close to the actor
without being seen by the
camera
The battery in the camera
and/or voice recorder might run
out of power while recording
The devices running out of power will
stop me and my team from recording
scenes for the trailer which, in turn,
would force us to take more time out
of production to get a spare battery
from York College and charging cable
for the voice recorder
Book an extra battery for the
camera so if it does run out of
power, we'll have a spare battery
for the camera.
I'll also book charging cables for
the camera batteries and the voice
recorder so that they have plenty
of power before we start recording
This will require holding
onto more equipment than
if we didn't have another
battery and charging
bays/cables
6. Potential Problems and Solutions
Problem Affect on my production Solution The implications
The SD card in
the camera might
run out of space
due to the card
not being
formatted before
being given to me
and my team
This will cause us to format the
card ourselves which takes a
small amount of time out of
production in order to format the
card and lose any recording we
may already have before the card
needed formatting
Format the card once we get the
camera so that everything is already
removed by the time we start
recording, we don't need to worry
about using too much space
This will mean taking a small
amount of time out of production
to format the card, but it is better
than doing some recording and
using the last bit of space on the
SD card and have to remove
everything have recorded as well
as everything else
If my team and
me are recording
for a while, I might
not have
refreshments to
help them through
the whole time
This might make my team not
want to work for a long time in
one sitting which might make
them not want to help me with my
project and cause me to need to
look for more members and
possibly start over for continuity
If we need to work hard for a while,
either bring refreshments or take the
group to a fast food place or
something similar; if we don't then
there's no point
This will take some time out of
production in order to keep
everyone fed and happy, which in
turn makes them want to continue
working and help me finish the
project
We might run out
of time during
filming
It will cause us to rush everything
and make mistakes that will
appear in the video, making the
project look unprofessional
Plan everything and make sure
everything goes according to that
plan, including everyone showing up
to the right place at the right time and
have the right equipment
This will mean planning for
basically all of the production
section which I could do at home
and not recording anything
7. Potential Problems and Solutions
Problem Affect on my
production
Solution The implications
Some people might
come towards us while
we are recording and
ask questions about
what is going on
This will force us to
stop recording so
whoever is there isn't
in frame or cannot be
heard; this might
distract me and my
team because of them
asking questions
I would have some people from the team who isn't
required for the specific scene circle around the area
so if someone comes close to us, they can stop them
and let them know that we are recording and don't
want to be disturbed.
If they insist on asking questions then we will answer
them as soon as possible and let them know that we
are working, and that we need to focus on the project
This would mean having more
members of my team to circle
the area.
If we have to answer questions,
this would waste more time
because people don't seem to
understand that we have to work
A power cut may occur
while I am editing the
footage together and
lose everything, I had
done with it since the
last time I had saved
the work
This would stop me
from editing the
footage and if I
haven't saved then I
would lose everything
I had changed since I
last saved the work
Save the work regularly and backup the work to a USB
stick so that if we are required to use a different device
then I still have all of my work; if the power cut affects
all devices, I'll see if I can do some recording until
power comes back on so I am always working on the
project.
This would cause me to not be
able to edit the footage as much
as I would want but would help
me get more footage to use so
when power comes back on, I
have even more options for what
clips to use for the final project
I might fall ill myself
and won't be able to
record on the day that
I'm ill
This will cause me to
not be able to go to
college and do any
recording
Try to stay as hygienic as possible to not get sick. If I
do end up getting ill, I'll report my absence as soon as
possible and try to get some planning and extra
research done while I am at home
This would mean that I cannot
do much or any recording during
the time that I am ill, but it
means that I can get some more
planning and research
8. Potential Problems and Solutions
Problem Affect on my
production
Solution The implications
I don't know how to
use certain tools in
different editing
software like
Photoshop and
Premiere Pro
This will cause me to
continue to use the
basics of the software
and not try anything
new to help improve my
skills.
Do some research on the software so
I know how to use certain tools in
specific ways in order to get the
results I need for the project
This would cause me to spend a bit more
time researching on the software than
other parts of the project like production,
but it means that wen I next use the
software, I know what to do and want to do
for specific parts of my project
I will not have the
equipment that I
need for the day(s)
of recording
This would mean I have
to cancel the time(s) of
recording and would
just waste time
Make sure that I have equipment
booked and with me when I am
recording with my team
This would mean making sure that I have
the kit that I need booked and with me
when we are recording
The microphone
ends up picking up
a large amount of
background noise
while recording
certain scenes
This would be
distracting for the
audience as there
would be a loud hiss
during the video
Test the microphone beforehand to
see if it picks up any background
noise, if it doesn't, continue recording,
if it does, try to see what is causing
the background noise and get rid of it,
if that is not possible, try to edit the
noise out using Premiere Pro
This would mean having to spend a bit of
time testing the microphone for background
noise and trying to get rid of the
background noise
9. How will I record my trailer?
• I will shoot my trailer with a DSLR 600D camera that can connect to a tripod
which are both provided by York College because I do not have the money to
purchase better equipment; however if I end up finding a good spot for
recording and don't have that equipment with me, I'll use my iPhone 6S for the
recording because while the camera on it is decent, it is not as good compared
the camera, but I believe that it is better to have an okay camera than to have no
camera at all when I need it
• I will only be using one camera at a time which means that I will not be able to
shoot my scenes with only one shot at a time, but will work for me because
there won't be many shots per scene, and they don't need to be shot
continuously
• During production, I will record all of the scenes that require using the studio
first so then they are ready to edit together while I am still in college during
those days; once I have the recordings from the studio, I will do any recording
that is needed outside when the weather and lighting matches what I need for
the clips; this would easier than recording everything in order however the main
possible problem is that if my team and I don't record in order, we may end up
with continuity problems which I do not want for the trailer
10. Where will I record my trailer?
• I will record my trailer in the York College studio using the studio lights because it
gives me controlover the lighting that I require for certain scenes and it is easy for
my crew to get to since we are already in college during the recordingtimes
• The studio also has a green and black screen which will allow me to have almost any
backgroundand special effects that I need for specific scenes however, when I have
used them from previous projects,I have always ended up with strangewhite
patches in large areas of the screen that were caused by bad lighting so I hope to
learn how to get rid of them by doing some experiments with them to help me
understandhow to light the green and black screen better and get rid of those white
patches
• I will mostly be using the studio for small scenes in the trailer that don't require much
movement like when a characteris sitting at a desk typing on a computer; I will also
use the studio for taking pictures for the poster and box art of the projectbecause it
will be good practicewith lighting and camera positioning
• During one scene, I am hoping to use the Lecture Hall in York College because I want
to use it for a scene where multiple people (the police and the antagonists)are
discussing the biggest part of the plot, this scene is where I need the small group of
people justto use as an audience to make the hall look more full
• During more moving scenes, I might record outside because it allows my team and
me to use a large amount of space for fastmoving scenes; however the biggest issue
with recording outside is thatlighting and weather is completely uncontrollable and
the it is much harder for the microphone to not pick up loud background noise.
11. How will I record the sound for my trailer?
• To record the sound for my film, I will use a TASCAM sound recorder with a boom microphone
connected to it because the equipmentis alwaysavailablefor me to book and rent from
college for free, so I do not need to buy it myself.
• I will record the dialogueand the background noise at the same time as my team and I are
filming using the boom microphone and voice recorder as it will make the dialogueeasier to
line up perfectly with the character's lip movement on screen as everything will be recorded at
the same time insteadof having my actorstry to match their sounds to their lip movement.
• To possibly make it easier, I might use the shotgun microphone that attaches to the camera
itself to help it detect the soundsI need, however the last time I had used it, it somehow
picked up a large amount of background noise and caused my last video to have a loud hiss
throughout the video which required me to try and edit the sound out but it was still
noticeable.
• I will be the sound operator to record the sound when my team and I are doing scenes that I
am not a part of but for times when I am part of the scene, I will ask a friend to be the sound
operator.I will choose someone who has operatedsound before and knowswhat they are
doing so I know that they are reliable.
• For the soundtrack in my trailer, I will use royaltyfree music from a website. I will not be
making my own soundtrack because I am not experienced in making my own music and I don't
think that I will be able to make a soundtrack that works or fits with my trailer.I won't be
asking the music department for help because I am not a fan of the music they make, and I
don't think that it fits with the tone of the trailer.
12. How will I edit my trailer?
• To edit the trailer, I will be using Premiere Pro because it allows me to edit
the footage together and have everything the way I need them to be and it
is always available in college so I have easy access to it; I am very familiar
with it from using it for videos since my first year of college and I am always
more than happy to learn new tricks for it and improve my skills with
Premiere Pro
• For my poster and box art, I will be using Photoshopbecause, same as
Premiere Pro, it is always available in college so I will be able to use it when I
need to, and I am familiar with it from using before at college and
occasionally at secondary school
• For some special effects like blood splatters and hacking code effects, I hope
to use After Effects as this software is best used with special effects;
however, I have never used it in any of my previous projects, but I hope to
use it for my experiments so I can practice using it and to see what I can and
can't do with After Effects and what I can do to improve my skills in using it
13. How will I makesure my trailer has good lighting?
• When I am recording in the studio, I will have access to the 6 studio lights
which will allow me to change the brightness of the background and my
actor(s)
• When using the lights before, I have always had issues with lighting the
greenscreen which has caused strange white patches to appear in videos from
past projects which I hope to avoid for this project by doing some experiments
in the studio to help me understand why the patches appear and how to get rid
of them during the production of the project
• For one of the scenes, I am hoping to use the lecture theatre which is indoors
so my team and I don't have to worry about the weather, but it does not have
studio lights so while lighting is harder to control, I might have enough to make
the scene work
• If I am recording outside, lighting will be much harder to control so in order to
use it, I will have to do the recording when the lighting and weather works best
for the scene
14. Audio Recorder Audit FormBefore I can start filming and voice
recording, I had to fill out these audit
forms for the audio recorder, the camera
and the editing software that I will be using
for the project.
When I startedfilling out the form, I first
rated my confidence with the audio
recorder as a 3 because I didn't feel as
confident in using the voice recorder
because I have rarely used it as well as I
could've in previous projects.
After filling out the form and learning
about how to use the voice recorder, I feel
a little bit more confident in my
understanding of it but still not completely
because of the previous projects not going
as well as I originally wanted.
15. Software Audit FormI had filled out another audit form about
different editing software like Photoshop
and Premiere Pro.
Similar to the audio recorder, I started
the form with a confidence score of 3/5
but once I had filled everything out and
learned how to do the tasks that were
presented in the form, I changed my
score to a 4/5. I haven't chosen 5/5
because due to the results from previous
projects, my confidence has been
lowered.
16. Camera Audit Form
I also filled out an audit form for the camera.
I originally gave myself a score of 2/5
because previous projects have not worked
well when I used the camera but after filling
everything out and realising what I actually
know, I gave myself a score of 4/5 because I
still don't feel 100% confident due to
previous failed projects knocking my
confidence.
17. How will I Choose who is going to be part of the
Cast?
• I will ask my friends and some family members if they can help with the project first because
they are more likely to help me out for free instead of professional actors; if I can't get enough
friends and family to help, I'll ask the "Drama" department if some people would like to be part
of the project since they may also be likely to help for free and the project could help them
with their acting since most of the time, they just yell and scream so some actual acting might
help them; if I still can't get enough team members to help then I will either try to use who I've
got or hire some cheap actors to help out
• I already have a few friends that could help me but it's not enough for everything yet so during
the second half of the pre-production section, I will keep asking friends, family and anyone that
I believe is good at acting and are reliable
• I only need about 5 or 6 actors including myself and a small group of people for one scene in
the Lecture Theatre and between the 5 or 6 of us, we will each be using the equipment like the
microphone and the camera when we are not acting, doing this will save time and space since
not all of us will be in frame at the same time
18. How will I Choose where to Film?
• I only need 2 outdoor locations since most of the recording will be done in the studio and I
have already thought of ideas for where to go for the outdoor areas; one of my ideas is a city
because it helps show the audience the setting of the series, however the biggest issue with
this is that there are going to be a lot of people there and they might not want to be part of the
video which would mean waiting until we get a group of people who are okay with being part
of it; another idea I have got is a wide-open field because it is easy to set up the recording area
and begin recording however, a field is not a very good setting for a dark futuristic tv series.
• I will be using the studio in college for most of the recording because it is easy to get to since
most of my team and I will already be in college most of the time and it allows me to control
the lighting and the background for the recordings and the photos; however, the biggest
problem with recording in the studio is that I have to book my team and myself in and hope
that the day(s) that I book are available.
• For one scene, I am hoping to use the Lecture Hall for a quick scene with my team; before the
day I need to record the scene, I will ask my tutor if my team and I can use the area for the
scene and if we can, I will ask my audience if they can make it to the hall on the day of
recording.
19. What do I need before I start Filming?
Before I start filming, I need to:
• Find around 5 or 6 main actors
• Find a small group of people as an audience in the Lecture Theatre
• Write a script
• Create a shot list
• Create a story board
• Book the kit that I require for the days that I need them for recording from college
• Arrange the days my team and I can record
• Make sure the locations that I need are available for recording
I will do these tasks over the course of planning, pre-production and production. If I haven't
gotten everything by the end of pre-production, I won't be able to film everything straight away. I
am certain, however, that I will be able to have everything sorted out before the end of Easter
half term.
20. What do I need from the Experiments?
• For the one of the experiments, I will be doing some quick teaser trailers to practice using
different camera shots and different transitions to help make the teasers interesting.
• I will also be making a poster to practice the different possible Photoshop editing techniques as
well as the different camera angles and shot types.
• For both the teasers and the poster, I mostly want to practice getting the lighting correct and
using the green screen more effectively because in previous projects, I have not done well in
using them.
• I hope to understand how to light my subject more effectively using the studio lights and how
to edit a green screen better using Premiere Pro.
• I also hope to understand how to use outside lighting more effectively whether it be using the
natural lighting or using Premiere Pro to colour grade everything to make sure that the subject.
