2. Research
My research focused mainly on the
front covers of many magazines.
Although there was one section that
did slightly cover a double page spread
I feel like I should have added more
notes covering them as the double
page spread in my final product felt
very bland and disjointed. I did
however make many notes on various
different magazine covers referencing
locations, angles, colours, cover lines,
text and audience. This helped me to
understand some of the repeated
elements which aided in my final
creations development and I will use
this approach in the future.
3. Planning
I think my planning included a lot of detail which helped me
to create my final product. My mood board had a variety of
colors and clothing styles which helped to inspire the further
work. Perhaps it would have been an improvement to add
more images relative to a magazine e.g. a front cover that
had an ambient / attention seeking color choice. This may
have further helped me to attempt a more interesting color
pallet and page layout. In the future I will try to create even
more variety in a mood board attempting to cover all design
and structural choices relevant to the work I will be doing.
The mind map was one of the more lacking areas in the
planning. It focused only on the photoshoot, the model and
his outfits. The project was to create a magazine cover and
one double page spread so when both of those were never
mentioned in the mind map I would imagine that it directly
impacted how I thought about approaching the task when it
was time for production. If there was a mind map dedicated
to the layout, contents, color combinations etc. of the
magazine I think the final product would have been a higher
quality of work and ultimately look more professional. In my
own future work I will make sure to create individual mind
maps for certain relevant concepts.
4. Time Management
My time management was in a very strange place. I didn’t end up sticking to my
schedule however I still managed to complete my product without stressing out for
time. Instead of starting my final production stage on the 3rd week as I was supposed
to I started on my production experiments as I was behind previously on written work
due to open days. I ended up using this time to try out and learn different photoshop
techniques and then start my work the following week. At first glance this looks like I
had put myself at a huge disadvantage however even though I only had the week to
start and finish the production it was the perfect amount of time to do so. Altogether I
managed to not only complete the product exactly how I wanted expected and I
managed to also teach myself some new techniques that I can further use in future
work. It might also be a good idea to stick to my schedule as efficiently as possible in
the future to prevent any problems that could arise from not doing so e.g.not
5. Technical Qualities
Existing product My product
Masthead on the top of the page. The existing product overlaps
and weaves it into the rest of the design where as mine stands
on its own. integration into the design could have lead to a
more interesting cover page
Labels aren't
present in the
existing
product. They
have a place but
weren't
implemented
well here. They
don’t look like
part of the
design
The existing
product
borders the
work where
as my work
covers the
page fully. My
product looks
a little packed
and clunky
and this could
be one of the
reasons why.
Cover lines on both products. The underlining on mine is to
thick but otherwise I think it works.
6. Technical Qualities
Headlines. Existing
product blends
over the picture
where as my
product sets in a
box. I think both
work well.
Both pages fill
with an whole
image. Mine is
“bordered” with
the white of the
page. I like the
design have the
blank spaces are
definitely
noticeable
In the existing
product the
images correlate
on both pages
and work with
each other. This
isn’t present in
my work and it
makes the design
feel a little more
random / messy.

7. Aesthetic Qualities
Logo and masthead
look more styled for a
[gaming magazine]
The font on the headlines is
appealing to look at and works
with the rest of the area.
The labels aren’t appealing to look
at and also steal some of the
attention just because they look so
out of place.
Not to sure about the italics. It draws
attention to the advertisement but I'm not
sure if it fits.
The font could be a little more
blocky but not bold.
8. Audience Appeal
Designer / expensive clothes
attract target audience drawn to
material wealth
Bold font draws attention
to the article
Cover line draws in audience to
find out more
Flashy masthead draws attention
from the audience
