Research
The biggest strengths of research was looking up existing products, creating an online survey. These were
helpful aspects because researching existing products allowed me to draw influences and grow familiar with
aspects such as the layout and key design features of a website, portfolio and magazine. Creating an online
survey in which 10 of my peers would respond to was beneficial to my research as it allowed a group of
people that fitted into my target market age range to answer various questions asking what content that they
would specifically like to see in a range of photography products. Although this was very helpful, there is a
weakness to this method of research as I am limited to the type of people who responded to my survey as the
link to my survey was available via blackboard. This meant that the majority of respondents willing to conduct
my survey as quick as possible, were peers or students from another class therefore restricting the age range
of my target audience however I overcame this by creating a range of products that would appeal to this age
range. Another weakness of this aspect of research is that I could not tell how truthful these answers were. I
Finished off my research by conducting an interview on two of my peers where It allowed me to receive more
detailed answers to those that I received from my survey. The strength of this aspect was that it helped me to
finalize my decision on what will be featured on my final range of products. Overall the biggest strength of my
research was the process of evaluating each aspect of my research once It had all been completed as I could
reflect on my questions and responses to further finalize my ideas for the range of products that I created.
Planning
A strength of my planning was creating three separate mind maps was that I could take note on every aspect
that needs to be included for each product that I was creating which was beneficial as I could go back to
these initial ideas if I were to use a trial and error method of producing experiments in which I used when I
changed one of my products from a clothing website to a magazine as it proved to be a more practical
option. A weakness however, would be that I could not use a lot of ideas from my mind maps. I was happy
with the outcome however there is always room for improvement therefore one way to make my planning
better would have been to split the sections of t he mind maps into more specific categories. Another
strength to my planning was producing both the informal proposal and mood board analysis as the informal
proposal allowed me to visually create a brief overview of the project which was useful to look back on whilst
I produced research. The analysis of the mood board allowed me to think about why I had grouped the
images together in a particular way. I then went on to talk about colour and theme which was useful because
colour and the theme of my products are very important things to consider. Overall planning helped me to
create my products by allowing me to think of a variety of ideas before choosing one and also encouraging
me to initially think about the types of colours, themes, tones and features. One thing that I could have done
better was carefully selecting which types of products I wanted to produce as I had initially chosen clothing
instead of magazine and therefore changed later on during production which could have effect my product as
I was left with less time to produce it.
Time Management
All aspects of production that relied heavily on I.T ran smoothly therefore I had no problems with managing my
time as a result of this. Although things like the internet, blackboard, email and many adobe programmes
worked without crashing or being corrupted in any way, I still managed to lose my own USB data stick at one
point in the project which was an instance in which I lost a bit a valuable time during my production as I had to
redo 3 pieces of work. In the future I will investigate google drive as I have an existing google account that I do
not use. Saving a copy of my work here would be beneficial to me as I would no longer manage to put myself in
the position where I can not move any further forward due to not having the pieces of work with me that I
need in order to progress. Managing time with the survey section of research was slightly more difficult as my
main concern was my peers not responding in time for me to progress with my research however I tackled this
problem by altering some previous work and then my survey respondents were ready for me to evaluate the
next day. Designing my website and portfolio was very similar in both my experiments and my final product.
This was a key aspect to why I had completed my production work in a short amount of time.
Technical Qualities
The main difference between my own product and the existing product shown on the left is that my front cover
features a lot more text however I like how simplistic the ‘nature photography’ magazine looks with minimal text
although I have chosen to feature much more text on the front of my magazine as if somebody wanted to
purchase this magazine they would have received more information about the content by just looking at the front
cover. My magazine front also features a wider range of colours as the existing product only features a black title
and white text above the image. I set a colour scheme for my magazine because this differentiates my product
from many others therefore making it recognisable upon first glance however, yet again I do also like the simplicity
of the existing product. In terms of positioning, both my own and the existing product are fairly similar as the
magazine title and the text are in similar places although I filled more space on the front page with text and image
therefore covering more of the image. As a result of this I can now discuss the certain aspects that I would change
if I were to recreate this product.
The similarities between my product and the existing
product are that they both feature some form of navigation
such as the search bar, links to pages and log in services.
Both products feature community based services such as
having the ability to like and comment certain photos
however I added an online forum link on the home page
which is an additional community based feature. The colour
scheme on the existing product is very basic yet effective
whist I chose a wider range of colours however the colours
that I chose to design my web page were dark which is
something I could have improved on as I think the overall
product would look a lot nicer if I had chose small variation
of vibrant colours. Another improvement I could have made
was down sizing the top and side banner on the page
because they look too large in depth and considering the
size of the text, it seems unnecessary to waste more space
on the page.
The main similarity between my product and the existing
product is the color scheme as they both feature a heavy
use of black however I added a white which added a slight
variation to color however I was still sticking to very basic
and formal. The text is also white with a black background
on both products which is effective as it makes the text
stand out more. The main difference is that users of my
products would have the ability to navigate to the next
page by using the ‘next page’ button whilst the existing
product gives its users the ability to scroll down in able to
browse more photo’s.
Aesthetic Qualities
An improvement that I would make is that I would choose a more vibrant shade of red
for the color scheme as it would help for the title and text stand out a lot more have
also used . I could a Drop Shadow to make title more dramatic looking or changed the
gradient text color to make the text stand out as much as it possibly can on each
letter according to shade beneath the text on the feature article photo. Larger
changes I could have made to the front cover is changing the colors entirely and
reposition the text. In terms of creativity, the magazine does have some distinctive
features however I had drawn influences from many other existing products which is
why my product has a very typical magazine layout. The picture I chose for the
feature article photo is really nice however I have little knowledge on how to
operative photo shop most effectively therefore I had not experimented with the
different color options to slightly change the appearance of the flower however I
think that the image displays I nice range of spring colors so that I really feel no need
to edit the color. I think the biggest strength to this product was the image I chose
and the layout of the text but a weakness however, would have to be that the
particular shade of color I chose doesn’t work well with the image over certain parts
of it however I did try changing the shade of red but the text still remained hard to
read. A way to overcome this would have been to re arrange the text but that would
have resulted in a messy layout therefore looking even less legitimate.
An aspect I like about the portfolio is the layout as the collection of images looks
really effective in rows with very little space in-between. A strength of this product
will definitely be the formal colour scheme because it is so basic therefore focusing
more on the images featured. If I had used more vibrant colours, the images would
have been a bit more difficult to see especially because the photos feature a lot of
vibrant colours. There are very little weaknesses to this product however one
improvement that I would make is that I need to reduce the space in-between the
two rows of photographs that would further group the images together. In terms of
creativity, I tried to photograph as many spring colours as I could near my home
and other locations around North Yorkshire, I also had a set amount of days to
collect these photographs but overall I am happy with the range of images I
collected as they are my own therefore unique to any others found on the internet
however the layout of my portfolio is very similar to many products before it so
making sure it was not the same to any other existing products was the most
difficult part of production.
Audience Appeal
My target market was young people aged 16-19 which was the age of the majority of my respondents who stated that photography was something
that they are interested in on one of my questions. This means that the overall subject appeals a lot to my target audience. I have also appealed to my
audience by focusing my products on nature based photography as the majority of students that conducted my survey chose the nature influenced
themes rather than themes like, architecture, art and urban photography. Photography is a common interest amongst people of this age range
because a lot of young people aged 16-19 are very familiar with social media platforms such as Instagram however Instagram and other
photography/social media platforms are not specific to one theme of photography as users a free to post whatever they like. From this I know that
people of this particular age do have an interest in sharing and taking photographs to some extent therefore these are the aspects that appeal to my
audience. Another way that I have appealed to my audience is that I featured my photography in the form of a website, portfolio and magazine which
were the most favourable amongst one particular question in my survey in which I asked the recipients how they would like to see photography
presented. Although my products do appeal to the audience I chose, nature photography is a subject enjoyed by a wide variety of people as there are
no specific aspects of nature that only appeal to a person of a certain age, gender or social class.

Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– Simple and effective layout
– Good colour palate
– Lots of information on magazine
– Good subheadings and title
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– Add a larger variety of colour to the backgrounds
– Behind the camera don’t use completely black to the edge
add some other sort of design
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I like how everything on the page is easily visible and can be
accessed. The magazine cover looks reliable in the way that
everything helps you find what with the areas of info have page
numbers to easily find them.
– I also like the hyperlinks on the webpage are easily visible and
have enough different themes to find exactly what you need
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– Things I think could be improved would be the fact that on the
magazine some of the writing isn’t clear enough to read from a
normal distance and can be quite difficult to read even when
focusing.
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– The visual aesthetics of the images and the layout combine well. They
contrast well together and are visually interesting and clear for the
audience to navigate on the website. The magazine stays to
conventions well and uses fonts cleverly in the masthead. The image
resolution is high and good quality and overall clear synergy between
the pieces are shown to link them together as one product.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• The magazine’s cover lines are quite long and could be more
effective if shortened and used buzzwords and creative use of
text/layout. The leading of the cover lines could also be closer to
bring the stories together. The front page wouldn’t have page
numbers and this makes it look slightly less realistic in terms of
professional conventions.
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
• I agree that some of the text on the magazine is really difficult to read and that the
text a little bit too large.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
• I disagree that the web page needs more variation in colour on the background, in
fact I think it needs less as too many colours make the page look crowded and
personally, I think that a website of its kind looks more effective with more formal
colours so that the images stand out.
Peer Feedback Summary
– The changes that I would make based upon my peer feedback is that I
would not include page numbers on the front page of my magazine because
it makes the magazine look less realistic which is something that I thought I
had seen in the research stage and wanted to include in my own product
however this was a big mistake I made as it wasn’t until after I had received
my feedback that I acknowledged the fact that very few, if not any, actually
include this feature on their front cover.
• I would also decrease the size of the text or even shorten the text and
use buzzwords, a more powerful but simple use of words, to make room for
the image beneath but also add a bit of dramatic effect. The text was hard to
read so I could have searched for a font that would enable to viewer to read
the text no matter what kind of shade is behind it. The colour is also something
a could have changed however I did experiment with numerous different
colours and there appeared to be not much difference in terms of being able to
read the text easily.

Planning A strength of my planning was creating three separate mind maps was that I could take note on every aspect that needs to be included for each product that I was creating which was beneficial as I could go back to these initial ideas if I were to use a trial and error method of producing experiments in which I used when I changed one of my products from a clothing website to a magazine as it proved to be a more practical option. A weakness however, would be that I could not use a lot of ideas from my mind maps. I was happy with the outcome however there is always room for improvement therefore one way to make my planning better would have been to split the sections of t he mind maps into more specific categories. Another strength to my planning was producing both the informal proposal and mood board analysis as the informal proposal allowed me to visually create a brief overview of the project which was useful to look back on whilst I produced research. The analysis of the mood board allowed me to think about why I had grouped the images together in a particular way. I then went on to talk about colour and theme which was useful because colour and the theme of my products are very important things to consider. Overall planning helped me to create my products by allowing me to think of a variety of ideas before choosing one and also encouraging me to initially think about the types of colours, themes, tones and features. One thing that I could have done better was carefully selecting which types of products I wanted to produce as I had initially chosen clothing instead of magazine and therefore changed later on during production which could have effect my product as I was left with less time to produce it.
  • 5. Time Management All aspects of production that relied heavily on I.T ran smoothly therefore I had no problems with managing my time as a result of this. Although things like the internet, blackboard, email and many adobe programmes worked without crashing or being corrupted in any way, I still managed to lose my own USB data stick at one point in the project which was an instance in which I lost a bit a valuable time during my production as I had to redo 3 pieces of work. In the future I will investigate google drive as I have an existing google account that I do not use. Saving a copy of my work here would be beneficial to me as I would no longer manage to put myself in the position where I can not move any further forward due to not having the pieces of work with me that I need in order to progress. Managing time with the survey section of research was slightly more difficult as my main concern was my peers not responding in time for me to progress with my research however I tackled this problem by altering some previous work and then my survey respondents were ready for me to evaluate the next day. Designing my website and portfolio was very similar in both my experiments and my final product. This was a key aspect to why I had completed my production work in a short amount of time.
  • 6. Technical Qualities The main difference between my own product and the existing product shown on the left is that my front cover features a lot more text however I like how simplistic the ‘nature photography’ magazine looks with minimal text although I have chosen to feature much more text on the front of my magazine as if somebody wanted to purchase this magazine they would have received more information about the content by just looking at the front cover. My magazine front also features a wider range of colours as the existing product only features a black title and white text above the image. I set a colour scheme for my magazine because this differentiates my product from many others therefore making it recognisable upon first glance however, yet again I do also like the simplicity of the existing product. In terms of positioning, both my own and the existing product are fairly similar as the magazine title and the text are in similar places although I filled more space on the front page with text and image therefore covering more of the image. As a result of this I can now discuss the certain aspects that I would change if I were to recreate this product.
  • 7. The similarities between my product and the existing product are that they both feature some form of navigation such as the search bar, links to pages and log in services. Both products feature community based services such as having the ability to like and comment certain photos however I added an online forum link on the home page which is an additional community based feature. The colour scheme on the existing product is very basic yet effective whist I chose a wider range of colours however the colours that I chose to design my web page were dark which is something I could have improved on as I think the overall product would look a lot nicer if I had chose small variation of vibrant colours. Another improvement I could have made was down sizing the top and side banner on the page because they look too large in depth and considering the size of the text, it seems unnecessary to waste more space on the page. The main similarity between my product and the existing product is the color scheme as they both feature a heavy use of black however I added a white which added a slight variation to color however I was still sticking to very basic and formal. The text is also white with a black background on both products which is effective as it makes the text stand out more. The main difference is that users of my products would have the ability to navigate to the next page by using the ‘next page’ button whilst the existing product gives its users the ability to scroll down in able to browse more photo’s.
  • 8. Aesthetic Qualities An improvement that I would make is that I would choose a more vibrant shade of red for the color scheme as it would help for the title and text stand out a lot more have also used . I could a Drop Shadow to make title more dramatic looking or changed the gradient text color to make the text stand out as much as it possibly can on each letter according to shade beneath the text on the feature article photo. Larger changes I could have made to the front cover is changing the colors entirely and reposition the text. In terms of creativity, the magazine does have some distinctive features however I had drawn influences from many other existing products which is why my product has a very typical magazine layout. The picture I chose for the feature article photo is really nice however I have little knowledge on how to operative photo shop most effectively therefore I had not experimented with the different color options to slightly change the appearance of the flower however I think that the image displays I nice range of spring colors so that I really feel no need to edit the color. I think the biggest strength to this product was the image I chose and the layout of the text but a weakness however, would have to be that the particular shade of color I chose doesn’t work well with the image over certain parts of it however I did try changing the shade of red but the text still remained hard to read. A way to overcome this would have been to re arrange the text but that would have resulted in a messy layout therefore looking even less legitimate. An aspect I like about the portfolio is the layout as the collection of images looks really effective in rows with very little space in-between. A strength of this product will definitely be the formal colour scheme because it is so basic therefore focusing more on the images featured. If I had used more vibrant colours, the images would have been a bit more difficult to see especially because the photos feature a lot of vibrant colours. There are very little weaknesses to this product however one improvement that I would make is that I need to reduce the space in-between the two rows of photographs that would further group the images together. In terms of creativity, I tried to photograph as many spring colours as I could near my home and other locations around North Yorkshire, I also had a set amount of days to collect these photographs but overall I am happy with the range of images I collected as they are my own therefore unique to any others found on the internet however the layout of my portfolio is very similar to many products before it so making sure it was not the same to any other existing products was the most difficult part of production.
  • 9. Audience Appeal My target market was young people aged 16-19 which was the age of the majority of my respondents who stated that photography was something that they are interested in on one of my questions. This means that the overall subject appeals a lot to my target audience. I have also appealed to my audience by focusing my products on nature based photography as the majority of students that conducted my survey chose the nature influenced themes rather than themes like, architecture, art and urban photography. Photography is a common interest amongst people of this age range because a lot of young people aged 16-19 are very familiar with social media platforms such as Instagram however Instagram and other photography/social media platforms are not specific to one theme of photography as users a free to post whatever they like. From this I know that people of this particular age do have an interest in sharing and taking photographs to some extent therefore these are the aspects that appeal to my audience. Another way that I have appealed to my audience is that I featured my photography in the form of a website, portfolio and magazine which were the most favourable amongst one particular question in my survey in which I asked the recipients how they would like to see photography presented. Although my products do appeal to the audience I chose, nature photography is a subject enjoyed by a wide variety of people as there are no specific aspects of nature that only appeal to a person of a certain age, gender or social class.
  • 11. Feedback 1 • What did you like about the product? – Simple and effective layout – Good colour palate – Lots of information on magazine – Good subheadings and title • What improvements could have been made to the product? – Add a larger variety of colour to the backgrounds – Behind the camera don’t use completely black to the edge add some other sort of design
  • 12. Feedback 2 • What did you like about the product? – I like how everything on the page is easily visible and can be accessed. The magazine cover looks reliable in the way that everything helps you find what with the areas of info have page numbers to easily find them. – I also like the hyperlinks on the webpage are easily visible and have enough different themes to find exactly what you need • What improvements could have been made to the product? – Things I think could be improved would be the fact that on the magazine some of the writing isn’t clear enough to read from a normal distance and can be quite difficult to read even when focusing.
  • 13. Feedback 3 • What did you like about the product? – The visual aesthetics of the images and the layout combine well. They contrast well together and are visually interesting and clear for the audience to navigate on the website. The magazine stays to conventions well and uses fonts cleverly in the masthead. The image resolution is high and good quality and overall clear synergy between the pieces are shown to link them together as one product. • What improvements could have been made to the product? • The magazine’s cover lines are quite long and could be more effective if shortened and used buzzwords and creative use of text/layout. The leading of the cover lines could also be closer to bring the stories together. The front page wouldn’t have page numbers and this makes it look slightly less realistic in terms of professional conventions.
  • 14. Peer Feedback Summary • What do you agree with from your peer feedback? • I agree that some of the text on the magazine is really difficult to read and that the text a little bit too large. • What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? • I disagree that the web page needs more variation in colour on the background, in fact I think it needs less as too many colours make the page look crowded and personally, I think that a website of its kind looks more effective with more formal colours so that the images stand out.
  • 15. Peer Feedback Summary – The changes that I would make based upon my peer feedback is that I would not include page numbers on the front page of my magazine because it makes the magazine look less realistic which is something that I thought I had seen in the research stage and wanted to include in my own product however this was a big mistake I made as it wasn’t until after I had received my feedback that I acknowledged the fact that very few, if not any, actually include this feature on their front cover. • I would also decrease the size of the text or even shorten the text and use buzzwords, a more powerful but simple use of words, to make room for the image beneath but also add a bit of dramatic effect. The text was hard to read so I could have searched for a font that would enable to viewer to read the text no matter what kind of shade is behind it. The colour is also something a could have changed however I did experiment with numerous different colours and there appeared to be not much difference in terms of being able to read the text easily.
