4. Research
How – why – what will you now do differently in the future
I found the research for this project really helpful. It was really good to analyse lot of
other existing products so I understood what I was going to create and I could take
ideas from other magazines and incorporate them in my own work.
I chose to research national geographic, BBC wildlife and Aesthetica. I chose these 3
because I felt like they were good representatives of what I was interested in, I knew
from the beginning of the project the I was probably going to do some form of
nature magazine so I felt like researching that genre was really important but I also
wanted something slightly different to analyse as well so I had a broader mindset
when it came to designing my own product.
I think overall my research was really thorough and covered most aspects of the
magazines I was looking at. I think it was strong because ei can see how the research
I did has impacted my final piece. The research helped me develop my ideas and
understand what works and what doesn’t which I feel is really important. I think a
weakness in my research is there was less variety than there could have been, it
might have been more helpful too see a bigger range of styles that were perhaps
more bold than the ones I chose. On the other hand I don’t feel like that research
would have been as useful in creating my final piece beacause my idea was simple.
5. Planning
I feel like my planning on the whole was good, I had quite a clear idea of what I
was creating so it was much easier to plan according to that. I think the planning
defiantly helped when it came to production week because I knew exactly what I
needed to create and how I wanted to do it. It also helped me refine all my
generated ideas.
Some parts of my pre production planning was ruined due to incompatibility
across computers so when I made my experiments on another computer and
sent them to the macs the layout had changed entirely and the work I did was
ruined which was a shame. I dot think this effected my end product but it was a
shame it was ruined.
To improve I would give myself more time so that if I had issues with transferring
work between devices, I have time to re do it or fix it.
My product may have been better because I would have experiments to
reference
6. Time Management
I think my time management was okay. I had
everything done on time and I will have all the work
complete for the hand in date. As this project wasn’t
something I was as interested in, I don’t think it
would have been improved anymore with more time.
If I had gone for a more ambitious idea and design
more time probably would of made a difference.
7. Technical Qualities
I think my magazine has some similarities with BBC Wildlife in its design.
Due to the similar themes I think it was always going to look similar but I
like that mine is more simple.
The font used for
the magazine
name is very
similar but the
layout is different
On my cover there is much more empty space than the
other which I don’t mind but looking back at it now I
would of preferred to have bigger text that’s readable
from a distance because it looks sparse when next to a
bolder magazine
I have used cut
out pictures
and shapes
and added
them to my
cover in a
similar way to
this other
magazine
The front page
photo is similar in
how it has a key
element being
the dog/hippo
and then a simple
background that
doesn’t distract
from the animal
which is good
because it draws
focus to the
center of the
page and allows
you to add text,
pictures etc
around the edges
without it being
to loud or
distracting from
the image.
8. Technical qualities
I really like how this
double page was divided
and I wish I had been
more imaginative with my
layout and not just split it
vertically down the middle
These are similar in how both
contain a large quantity of
text. Although they are both
wordy, the writing has been
displayed differently. I think
both designs are effective and
I like how in both there is the
clear colour theme. I
definiatley took some
inspiration from this page
when designing mine.
On each of the double pages,
there is 3 pictures which I feel
is the right amount of images
otherwise it feels
overcrowded.
On both, the strongest photo is
the biggest taking up half the
space on the page and has text
over it giving you more
information.
Another similarity Is the
use of boxes, both are
very neat and sharp in
how they are presented
which makes them look
more proffesional and
shows they are aimed at
an older audience.
You can also see this by
the layout of the text.
There is a lot of text and
it covers most of the
pages. The font is small
and simple but clear.
9. Aesthetic Qualities
I'm happy with my end product. I think it looked professional
and clean cut although I think my cover appeared a little empty.
I liked how my colour scheme turned out, I think it made it look
much neater because everything was coordinated and the
shades all complimented each other.
I think my pictures on my double page all linked and worked
really nicely.
I liked that unlike my double page the cover had more warmer
tones that I could use to give my front page more colour.
I think it would have been nice to try and be more creative with
my design but I was short for time towards the end of the
project
10. Audience Appeal
I think I have appealed
to my target audience,
my themes and style
are definitely well
suited to the market
I’m pitching too.
I think majority of my
target audience would be
older so I tried to be
aware of how that would
impact my deign when I
was doing my
experiments.
I feel like the layout is
simple but it works
especially as the people
im appealing too are
probably more interested
in the information than
other elements
I also tried to use fun,
discriptive language
that make the reader
feel comfortable but
that was also
interesting and
informative as the
people reading it are
reading it most likely
for its informative
values
I tried to choose a clear font
as the older generation are
more likely to struggle with
visual impairments etc.
So I wanted it to be
accessible for all readers
to widen my audience.
I also used some high quality photos which
appeal to wildlife photographers
