• Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products.
• Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the
producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel
• Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound
elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What
part does music play in the work?
• Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If you listen
to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better understanding
of what exists and what is possible. It will also help guide your project.
Existing Products Research
• Millennium Flacon (ASMR)
– Doesn’t include any audio of people speaking. Lack of sound to create
an eerie environment for the audience.
– From the sound effects used, you’re able to clearly tell the genre of
the video and who it is being appealed to.
– There aren’t any characters voiced in this clip so you would have to
focus on the music and visuals to understand.
– There is no suggested time, but from the title of the video and the
sound effects included you can assume that it its to do with science
fiction.
– Overall the sounds effects used helped to create an image for the
audience about what the sounds would represent and how/why. And
also how it links to the plot of the video.
Existing Products Research
• Doctor Who
• The audio includes people speaking so you’re able to tell from the
dialogue what is happening.
• Because the audio is voice acted so you wouldn’t have to just rely on
sound effects to determine what the audio is about (e.g. the plot).
• The majority of the video is dialog based with bits of sound effects.
• There is no suggested time, but from the title of the video and the sound
effects included you can assume that it its to do with science fiction.
• Overall the build up in music and sound effects through out the video
comes when The Doctor is mentioned, in order to show his importance to
the audience.
Existing Products Research
• Haunted House soundscape
• There is no dialogue and the focus is around the sound effects. With the lack of
script and people speaking, the sound effects allow the audience to create the
story.
• Doesn’t include any audio of people talking and/or having a conversation. The
audio includes a girl screaming as well as other creepy sound effects. This helps to
create an eerie environment for the audience to listen to.
• There aren’t any characters voiced in this clip so you would have to focus on the
music and visuals to understand.
• There is no suggested time but from the title of the video and also the various
sound effects, you would be able to determine the theme of the video. (you would
be able to assume it has some relevance to Halloween or something similar).

Story – Idea 1
Provide a brief summary of the story/stories
you have chosen
annie96 is typing…
This is a text-based story about two people called Annie and David, who
are texting each other late at night. Whilst texting Annie hears noises and
looks outside to see a man digging for something in her garden. Panicking,
she texts David and asks him what to do. David tells her that it’s most likely
just a man who is either drunk or on drugs. Annie continues to watch
before seeing the man stand up. Annie sees that the man looks just like
David and believes that he is pulling a prank on him, however David
assures her that it isn’t. By looking at his clothing Annie insists that the
man is David but he continues to deny the possibility. Annie them sees the
man stand up and turn toward her. He sees her and starts to move toward
her house. She panics and decides to hide in her wardrobe. She hears the
man move closer and continues to text. She is convinced that this has
something to do with David and begs him to stop the man. After a while
the noises stop and ‘Annie’ tells David that the man has gone. David is
relieved however is still skeptical. He asks Annie, “annie… how do i know
this is you?” to which the response is “annie96 went offline”.
The ending to this story indicates that the person speaking
to David was the same person who was in Annie’s garden.
We can also assume that the man killed Annie or did
something bad.
Story – Idea 2
‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ is a crime-novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which also features
the detective Sherlock Holmes. It is set in Dartmoor in Devon (West England) and tells the story of an
attempted murder inspired by the legend of a diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Sherlock Holmes
and his companion Dr. Watson investigate the case.
Working Title:
What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later
The title of my audio is “annie96 is typing…”
Audience:
Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc. Use the
Audience Classifications PowerPoint on Blackboard to help you develop this section.
My intended audience is for teenagers. I do not have a specific gender that I want to appeal to,
as I want to appeal to all and not just one certain social group. I will make sure that my product
is easily accessible so I do not limit any social groups for viewing it.
Why would your project appeal to this person? Discuss each audience element in relation to
content (why would your product appeal to the age group? Why would your product appeal to
the gender? Etc.)
I think that my audience will appeal to my project because the theme is quite modern as well as
the characters included in the story. I think that my product will also appeal to both male and
female because I do not plan to include anything that could stop someone from viewing my
product due to offensive material.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make?
Experiments
Foley
• Include your work on foley and some writing
about what went well, what could be better
and what you have learned.
• You should include a link and a screen shot.
Don’t embed your work, it won’t work.
Recording
• Write about your experiences of recording in
different places.
• What effect did it have? How will this
influence your project?
Garage Band
• Include your work with Garage Band, and
some writing about what went well, what
could be better and what you have learned.
• You should include a link and a screen shot.
Don’t embed your work, it won’t work.

The script starts with the two speaking normally (etc… “annie96: you asleep??” & “mcdavey: no..
guess you’re not either”.)

Production
Daily Reflection Day 1
• I started creating my product by recording the audio needed. I took a few
days to record all of the audio that I needed, but was able to do it.
• In order to record my audio I used an audio recorder as well as earphones
so that whilst recording I could make sure that everything sounded okay
e.g. the volume was loud enough and that the people speaking could be
heard clearly.
Daily Reflection Day 2
• I was ill during this time, so I was unable to complete any work and/or
start to create my product.
• This meant that I would have less time to create my product as well as
getting any additional sound effects as well as background music.
Daily Reflection Day 3
• I was ill during this time, so I was unable to complete any work and/or
start to create my product.
• This meant that I would have less time to create my product as well as
getting any additional sound effects as well as background music.
Daily Reflection Day 4
• I ended up losing large amounts of my audio which meant that I had to
redo a lot of it. This also meant that the audio would sound rushed
compared to one that I had done previously.
• This meant that I had to also rush in creating my product, meaning it
wouldn’t be as good as I had originally wanted it to be.
Evaluation
Research
A strength of my research is that I was able to see what kinds of already existing
products were out there and use them to create my own product. I researched
three audio clips that were around 5 minutes (or longer) and made sure to listen to
that all was included e.g. the sounds they may have used as well as the audio
recorded and how they did it. I also had to think about why the person may have
chosen certain sound effects and how this adds to the video as a whole. As well as
thinking about how the certain sound effects and/or audio would make the
audience or if I creates a type of atmosphere. My research helped me to create a
product that was similar to the ones that I had researched. Through my research I
was able to see what kind(s) of music and/or audio would work best for what type
of drama e.g. for a ghost story suspenseful music would work well as adding sound
effects to add to that suspense. I also did multiple experiments with audio using
Garage Band as well as attempting to create a ‘Foley’, in which we dubbed over an
already existing clip from a film with our own sound effects. The audio we created
from Garage Band also helped me to think about the kind of music I could include
in my final product as well as sound effects. A weakness of my product is that I only
researched a few existing products, 3 in total. If I wanted to try and create a better
final product I would have tried to do a bit more research to get a variety of ideas
and look at how various people had created their audio. If I could improve my
research I would also want to improve the amount of notes I took from watching
the already existing products.
Planning
A strength of my planning is that the script I was using was already existing
which meant I could spent more time on other various parts of planning
rather than just spending time deciding on what to write for a script. Because
of the time that I had, I took my time deciding what sound effects would fit
well with my script as well as the kind of music I wanted to include. Since the
script was from an already existing story I researched other peoples versions
of my chosen audio to see what they did e.g. how they portrayed the story as
well as their choices of music and sound effects. From this I was able to
decide what I wanted to do and how I wanted to make it. A weakness of my
planning is that it lacks detail. I didn’t specify why I chosen to use my chosen
script or why I chose certain sound effects/music. If I had time to go back and
improve my planning I would go back and add more detail. I don’t think that
the lack of detail in my planning had any effect on my product. I could also
have tried to include more than just one choice for sound effects and music. I
could have instead found a variety of different sound effects and incorporated
that into my product by experimenting.
Time Management
For the most part, I think that I have managed my time well. However, there
was a time where I lost parts of my audio which I had to redo. This meant that
I had less time to create my product and then upload it. I managed to finish
my product on time however it was rushed, which meant that it may not have
been as good as I could have made it to be. Because of the lack of time that I
had, the audio I had didn’t sound as good as when I recorded it the first time.
In the future if I wanted to avoid this again I would make sure that my audio
files were backed up so that I didn’t lose them again. If I had additional time
to improve my product I would go back a re-record my audio so the quality of
the sound is better and make sure that there is no background noise as well. I
would also go back and try to experiment with different sound effects so that
I am not just using the same one on repeat. I didn’t have a problem with the
music I chose in the end since it would just be in the background to add
suspense to my audio.
Technical Qualities
When researching I was able to find already existing products that were
centered around the script I had chosen. From this I was able to compare my
own audio to the already existing audio clips. I found that my audio was quite
similar in terms of the choice of sound effects e.g. since the story was based
around two people texting at night a lot of the audio clips included sound
effects of ‘typing’ and ‘sending a message’. I recorded my sound effects by
using the sounds from my phone and then added that to my audio. I recorded
my audio with an audio recorder. I did not record the background music, I
found the audio on YouTube and made sure to also add that to my ‘Recourse
List’ in my planning. After recording all of the audio I put them all onto
PremierPro and created my product. I chose not to use any Foley methods as I
thought it would not work well with that I wanted to create. I made sure to
include pauses in my audio from where the two people were speaking, so
that I was able to add the sound effects. This made the audio work smoother
and didn’t sound rushed.
Aural Qualities
I think that because of the lack of time I had to create my product, due to
losing my previous audio, meant that I wasn’t able to create the best audio
that I could. Besides re-doing my audio, I think that my product turned out
well and doesn’t sound bad. I like the sound effects that I used in between
when they two people were talking (the text noises). This made it sound more
unique rather than just having two people speak with music in the
background. I also like how paced the audio is, such as how it increases in
suspense with help of the background music to create a tense atmosphere. If
I could improve my audio I would want to re-record the two people speaking
in my product so that there was no background noise. A strength of my audio
is that you’re able to tell clearly what is going on however because of the
background music that I was unable to get rid of it didn’t sound as
suspenseful as I would have wanted it to be. There are also times when the
voice acting also didn’t help to create that sort of tense atmosphere as well.
Audience Appeal
I think that I have appealed to my target audience, my target audience being
for teenagers. I think that the script I chose would appeal to my audience
because of how suspenseful it becomes toward the end. The script is based
around two teenagers, which is why I wanted my target audience to be
similar, so that they felt as if they could relate to how they two characters
spoke to one another. This meant that the audience would want to continue
listening to find out what happens in the end. I think the sound effects I chose
also helped to create an image for the audience.

Audio pro forma

  • 1. • Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products. • Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel • Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What part does music play in the work? • Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If you listen to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better understanding of what exists and what is possible. It will also help guide your project.
  • 2. Existing Products Research • Millennium Flacon (ASMR) – Doesn’t include any audio of people speaking. Lack of sound to create an eerie environment for the audience. – From the sound effects used, you’re able to clearly tell the genre of the video and who it is being appealed to. – There aren’t any characters voiced in this clip so you would have to focus on the music and visuals to understand. – There is no suggested time, but from the title of the video and the sound effects included you can assume that it its to do with science fiction. – Overall the sounds effects used helped to create an image for the audience about what the sounds would represent and how/why. And also how it links to the plot of the video.
  • 3. Existing Products Research • Doctor Who • The audio includes people speaking so you’re able to tell from the dialogue what is happening. • Because the audio is voice acted so you wouldn’t have to just rely on sound effects to determine what the audio is about (e.g. the plot). • The majority of the video is dialog based with bits of sound effects. • There is no suggested time, but from the title of the video and the sound effects included you can assume that it its to do with science fiction. • Overall the build up in music and sound effects through out the video comes when The Doctor is mentioned, in order to show his importance to the audience.
  • 4. Existing Products Research • Haunted House soundscape • There is no dialogue and the focus is around the sound effects. With the lack of script and people speaking, the sound effects allow the audience to create the story. • Doesn’t include any audio of people talking and/or having a conversation. The audio includes a girl screaming as well as other creepy sound effects. This helps to create an eerie environment for the audience to listen to. • There aren’t any characters voiced in this clip so you would have to focus on the music and visuals to understand. • There is no suggested time but from the title of the video and also the various sound effects, you would be able to determine the theme of the video. (you would be able to assume it has some relevance to Halloween or something similar).
  • 7. Story – Idea 1 Provide a brief summary of the story/stories you have chosen annie96 is typing… This is a text-based story about two people called Annie and David, who are texting each other late at night. Whilst texting Annie hears noises and looks outside to see a man digging for something in her garden. Panicking, she texts David and asks him what to do. David tells her that it’s most likely just a man who is either drunk or on drugs. Annie continues to watch before seeing the man stand up. Annie sees that the man looks just like David and believes that he is pulling a prank on him, however David assures her that it isn’t. By looking at his clothing Annie insists that the man is David but he continues to deny the possibility. Annie them sees the man stand up and turn toward her. He sees her and starts to move toward her house. She panics and decides to hide in her wardrobe. She hears the man move closer and continues to text. She is convinced that this has something to do with David and begs him to stop the man. After a while the noises stop and ‘Annie’ tells David that the man has gone. David is relieved however is still skeptical. He asks Annie, “annie… how do i know this is you?” to which the response is “annie96 went offline”. The ending to this story indicates that the person speaking to David was the same person who was in Annie’s garden. We can also assume that the man killed Annie or did something bad.
  • 8. Story – Idea 2 ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ is a crime-novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which also features the detective Sherlock Holmes. It is set in Dartmoor in Devon (West England) and tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson investigate the case.
  • 9. Working Title: What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later The title of my audio is “annie96 is typing…” Audience: Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc. Use the Audience Classifications PowerPoint on Blackboard to help you develop this section. My intended audience is for teenagers. I do not have a specific gender that I want to appeal to, as I want to appeal to all and not just one certain social group. I will make sure that my product is easily accessible so I do not limit any social groups for viewing it. Why would your project appeal to this person? Discuss each audience element in relation to content (why would your product appeal to the age group? Why would your product appeal to the gender? Etc.) I think that my audience will appeal to my project because the theme is quite modern as well as the characters included in the story. I think that my product will also appeal to both male and female because I do not plan to include anything that could stop someone from viewing my product due to offensive material. Project Concept (approx. 200 words) What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make?
  • 11. Foley • Include your work on foley and some writing about what went well, what could be better and what you have learned. • You should include a link and a screen shot. Don’t embed your work, it won’t work.
  • 12. Recording • Write about your experiences of recording in different places. • What effect did it have? How will this influence your project?
  • 13. Garage Band • Include your work with Garage Band, and some writing about what went well, what could be better and what you have learned. • You should include a link and a screen shot. Don’t embed your work, it won’t work.
  • 15. Script Draft annie96 is typing… This is a text-based story about two people called Annie and David, who are texting each other late at night. The script starts with the two speaking normally (etc… “annie96: you asleep??” & “mcdavey: no.. guess you’re not either”.)

  • 20. Resource List Resource Owned/Cost What sound effect will it be used for? Text (typing) sound effect (From YouTube) Free Used as a sound effect between parts of my audio when no one is speaking, in order to give off the effect that two people are texting. Text (sending) sound effect (From YouTube) Free Used as a sound effect between parts of my audio when no one is speaking, in order to give off the effect that two people are texting. Background Music Created in Garage Band to put over audio and sound effects.
  • 22. Daily Reflection Day 1 • I started creating my product by recording the audio needed. I took a few days to record all of the audio that I needed, but was able to do it. • In order to record my audio I used an audio recorder as well as earphones so that whilst recording I could make sure that everything sounded okay e.g. the volume was loud enough and that the people speaking could be heard clearly.
  • 23. Daily Reflection Day 2 • I was ill during this time, so I was unable to complete any work and/or start to create my product. • This meant that I would have less time to create my product as well as getting any additional sound effects as well as background music.
  • 24. Daily Reflection Day 3 • I was ill during this time, so I was unable to complete any work and/or start to create my product. • This meant that I would have less time to create my product as well as getting any additional sound effects as well as background music.
  • 25. Daily Reflection Day 4 • I ended up losing large amounts of my audio which meant that I had to redo a lot of it. This also meant that the audio would sound rushed compared to one that I had done previously. • This meant that I had to also rush in creating my product, meaning it wouldn’t be as good as I had originally wanted it to be.
  • 27. Research A strength of my research is that I was able to see what kinds of already existing products were out there and use them to create my own product. I researched three audio clips that were around 5 minutes (or longer) and made sure to listen to that all was included e.g. the sounds they may have used as well as the audio recorded and how they did it. I also had to think about why the person may have chosen certain sound effects and how this adds to the video as a whole. As well as thinking about how the certain sound effects and/or audio would make the audience or if I creates a type of atmosphere. My research helped me to create a product that was similar to the ones that I had researched. Through my research I was able to see what kind(s) of music and/or audio would work best for what type of drama e.g. for a ghost story suspenseful music would work well as adding sound effects to add to that suspense. I also did multiple experiments with audio using Garage Band as well as attempting to create a ‘Foley’, in which we dubbed over an already existing clip from a film with our own sound effects. The audio we created from Garage Band also helped me to think about the kind of music I could include in my final product as well as sound effects. A weakness of my product is that I only researched a few existing products, 3 in total. If I wanted to try and create a better final product I would have tried to do a bit more research to get a variety of ideas and look at how various people had created their audio. If I could improve my research I would also want to improve the amount of notes I took from watching the already existing products.
  • 28. Planning A strength of my planning is that the script I was using was already existing which meant I could spent more time on other various parts of planning rather than just spending time deciding on what to write for a script. Because of the time that I had, I took my time deciding what sound effects would fit well with my script as well as the kind of music I wanted to include. Since the script was from an already existing story I researched other peoples versions of my chosen audio to see what they did e.g. how they portrayed the story as well as their choices of music and sound effects. From this I was able to decide what I wanted to do and how I wanted to make it. A weakness of my planning is that it lacks detail. I didn’t specify why I chosen to use my chosen script or why I chose certain sound effects/music. If I had time to go back and improve my planning I would go back and add more detail. I don’t think that the lack of detail in my planning had any effect on my product. I could also have tried to include more than just one choice for sound effects and music. I could have instead found a variety of different sound effects and incorporated that into my product by experimenting.
  • 29. Time Management For the most part, I think that I have managed my time well. However, there was a time where I lost parts of my audio which I had to redo. This meant that I had less time to create my product and then upload it. I managed to finish my product on time however it was rushed, which meant that it may not have been as good as I could have made it to be. Because of the lack of time that I had, the audio I had didn’t sound as good as when I recorded it the first time. In the future if I wanted to avoid this again I would make sure that my audio files were backed up so that I didn’t lose them again. If I had additional time to improve my product I would go back a re-record my audio so the quality of the sound is better and make sure that there is no background noise as well. I would also go back and try to experiment with different sound effects so that I am not just using the same one on repeat. I didn’t have a problem with the music I chose in the end since it would just be in the background to add suspense to my audio.
  • 30. Technical Qualities When researching I was able to find already existing products that were centered around the script I had chosen. From this I was able to compare my own audio to the already existing audio clips. I found that my audio was quite similar in terms of the choice of sound effects e.g. since the story was based around two people texting at night a lot of the audio clips included sound effects of ‘typing’ and ‘sending a message’. I recorded my sound effects by using the sounds from my phone and then added that to my audio. I recorded my audio with an audio recorder. I did not record the background music, I found the audio on YouTube and made sure to also add that to my ‘Recourse List’ in my planning. After recording all of the audio I put them all onto PremierPro and created my product. I chose not to use any Foley methods as I thought it would not work well with that I wanted to create. I made sure to include pauses in my audio from where the two people were speaking, so that I was able to add the sound effects. This made the audio work smoother and didn’t sound rushed.
  • 31. Aural Qualities I think that because of the lack of time I had to create my product, due to losing my previous audio, meant that I wasn’t able to create the best audio that I could. Besides re-doing my audio, I think that my product turned out well and doesn’t sound bad. I like the sound effects that I used in between when they two people were talking (the text noises). This made it sound more unique rather than just having two people speak with music in the background. I also like how paced the audio is, such as how it increases in suspense with help of the background music to create a tense atmosphere. If I could improve my audio I would want to re-record the two people speaking in my product so that there was no background noise. A strength of my audio is that you’re able to tell clearly what is going on however because of the background music that I was unable to get rid of it didn’t sound as suspenseful as I would have wanted it to be. There are also times when the voice acting also didn’t help to create that sort of tense atmosphere as well.
  • 32. Audience Appeal I think that I have appealed to my target audience, my target audience being for teenagers. I think that the script I chose would appeal to my audience because of how suspenseful it becomes toward the end. The script is based around two teenagers, which is why I wanted my target audience to be similar, so that they felt as if they could relate to how they two characters spoke to one another. This meant that the audience would want to continue listening to find out what happens in the end. I think the sound effects I chose also helped to create an image for the audience.
