Part I
The
Hero’s
Quest
Use this page to
breakdown an
existing film, using
the Hero’s Quest
theory. How does
your chosen film
fit with this?
The Ordinary World Katniss’s district (district 12) is living in poverty after a failed rebellion years ago.
The Call to Adventure They are called to a name picking to find out who will take part in the hunger games.
The Refusal
Katniss refuses to let primrose take part in the game and steps up as volunteer instead of her
sister and Peeta is chosen as the second tribute.
Mentor Help
Peeta and Katniss are escorted to the capitol with Effie and their mentor Haymitch who is the
only survivor of the hunger games from district 12
Crossing the Threshold
When they arrive at the capitol they are put into training with the other tributes from every
district.
Test/Allies/Enemies
During the training the capitol weren’t paying attention to her so to get their attention she
fires an arrow towards the capitol and hits an apple on the buffet table which created tension
between the game maker and Katniss, thinking this will put her in a bad position but it ended
up getting her the highest score. During an interview Peeta confesses his love for Katniss and
Katniss thinks he said it just to get sponsors so then is unsure if Peeta is an ally or enemy.
Approach
At the beginning of the hunger games Katniss instantly puts herself in danger by going straight
to the middle to try and get supplies, she then runs away and escapes death. Ignoring
Haymitch’s advice which was to stay away from the middle.
Ordeal
After being forced towards the others by the game makers, Katniss runs into the careers who
has allied with Peeta, however when the careers try to kill Katniss, peeta suggests for them to
wait over night to attack and when doing so, rue allies with Katniss to kill the careers by
cutting down the tracker jacker nest. When stung by the tracker jackers Katniss’s vision goes
blurry and she has hallucinations. Rue soon dies and she finds Peeta, a new rule is introduced
to let there be 2 winner providing they are in the same district.
Reward
At the end of the games, Katniss and Peeta head to the centre of the games to be pushed to
fight the last tribute. The game maker decides to change rules and change it back to 1 winner
instead of 2 winner if they are from the same district. This causes Peeta and Katniss to turn on
the capitol and threaten to eat the poisonous berries which would give them no winner,
making the capitol give up and declare they are both winners.
Road Back
They are picked up by the plane from the hunger games where they can change, freshen up
and prepare for more interviews as the victors
Atonement
When they get out of the hunger games they speak to their mentor and haymitch warns
Katniss that she has made a mistake turning against the capitol.
Return
They return back to the district and are greeted by all of the members of the district. Katniss
reunites with her family and Gale and President Snow plots his next move.

Character type How they appear in your story
The Hero Katniss. Main Character who goes to the hunger games after standing up as volunteer so that her
sister doesn’t have to go. She also comes back victorious from them
The Villain The villains are the game makers who try to get them to kill each other and also the other tributes,
mainly the careers. President snow is the main villain being the head of the government running the
games.
The Helper Peeta joins Katniss after reuniting and wins the games together, soon to become the star-crossed
lovers that they had the appearance of before the games. Rue also being one of Katniss’ allies helps
the hero and is therefore a helper, she helps Katniss try to kill the careers and make a fire, hunt and
survive.
The Donor The donor would be all the people who gave sponsors for Katniss and Peeta. An example being
Haymitch after he provides Katniss with the medicine she needs when she is hurt and providing her
with a bow and arrows.
The Dispatcher The dispatcher would be all of the people who helped them get ready and prepared for the games.
Effie chooses the names, Haymitch mentors them and Cinna helps her prepare too.
The Princess or prize The ‘princess’ of the film could be seen as primrose as she was saved by Katniss from going into the
hunger games. However the prize was winning the games and returning back to her family.
The False Hero There are a number of false heroes in the huger games as they are pretty much all false heroes
because even Katniss and Peeta, who are the main characters and victors, killed people. Meaning
they aren’t quite the heroes they seem to be. The capitol are the main false heroes for putting the
characters in the games but then helping them out by providing them with supplies and helping

ancient Egyptian treasure because they know somebody they can sell it to which will help save their families from
poverty. They get help from their prisoner officer who help them escape and tell them what they need to do to get
it.
When Mid summer, at the warmest point of the year where the rivers and lakes are all dried up and their families are
suffering most with no food or water.
Where Ancient Egyptian times, in Giza where the pyramids are and soon move to the city.
How During the puzzles they were collecting artifacts which gave them more time for the final puzzle, if they do not
finish the final puzzle before the timer ends the alarms will be triggered… They finish the last puzzle after the alarm
Idea 2
Who Katherine Maguire, Jonathan Walker
What Katherine and Jonathan fight to see who will keep the Maguire family business
Why Jonathan wants the family business and it is the most successful business in their city. He is willing to risk his life to
get it. Katherine was adopted by the Maguire family as a baby and as she is not related by blood and only adopted
Jonathan thinks that he should be the head as he is the cousin of Katherine’s mother.
When On a winter afternoon
Where 'Ye old Maguire Bank’ in the city
How After a threatening call from Jonathan, Katherine puts up guards and hears voices of her dad as a guardian angel
telling her to do whatever it takes to keep the business. She takes the advice and fights Jonathan to his death and
keeps the business and goes back inside to celebrate.
Idea 3

belongs to her and changes colour depending on her mood. One day the blob gets hyper and turns a bright,
glowing white. It begins to teleport and energetic and starts causing chaos across the town.
Why The girls eats a bag of really sugary sweets even though the blob warned her not to, but she did not understand.
When Summer day during the school holidays
Where In the town where the girl lives in.
How The girl calms down and finally gets tired after a day of sugar rush and makes a public apology to say sorry and
gives everyone their stuff back and the blob is sent back to his planet.
Research
Research
The colour scheme of the magazine is reds and oranges mostly, giving off the fire theme as
Katniss is known as ‘the girl on fire’ it also contrasts the background as the background is very
lights. They also used a gradient blue text as the coverlines to make that bit also stand out
compared to the rest of the cover.
The font and style of the logo changes with each magazine cover to fit it to match the style of
the film or a certain character from a film. For example, this magazine has changed the logo
to fit the theme of the hunger games. More specifically, Katniss as she is the character
featured on the cover and is also known as ‘the girl on fire’ in the movies so was suitable to
fit her ‘theme’. They use lots of different fonts in the cover which also brings attention to
different sections of the cover. For example, each of the coverlines have a heading which
introduces the coverline, each of them have a different font, this is used to separate and
contrast the headings to the coverlines. There is a mix of both serif and sans serif fonts which
contrast too. The font of ‘il fuoco dentro’ (more information inside) is in a similar font to the
original hunger games font on the book covers and DVD covers.
There is only one main image on this magazine which is taken in a studio with her ‘throne’ to
show that she is the ‘queen’ (head) of them all, being the main character and the hero of the
story. Also using an image of the mocking jay which is a very big part of the story as she is the
mocking jay, and the mocking jay symbolizes her and the film heavily. The studio lighting is
used to emphasize the costume and contrast it with the background, with highlights on her
body to make it stand out more and shadowing the throne and her legs to make it darker to
represent her 2 personalities of ‘Katniss, the sweet innocent girl from district 12’ to ‘Katniss
Everdeen, The girl on fire, the mocking jay and the protector of all district, the champion of
the hunger games’.
Like most magazine covers this one has a main image with bigger texts as the main heading
and for the name of the magazine company, with smaller text for the coverlines/ this is done
to draw attention using the images and main headline and then the smaller text is grabbing
closer attention when they look at it through different fonts and bright colours.
The text has a mix of capital and normal lettering to draw attention to different sections too.
For example, the name of the magazine is in big, bold lettering which draws your attention to
that first and then to the middle section of the image which has the name of the person
featured and tells you the contents of inside the magazine explaining there is exclusive
content from the protagonist (Katniss aka Jennifer)
The magazine. Like most, has a main image with text around the borders. Sometimes this writing
is only at one side like this one, sometimes it can be at both. This is used done so that there isn’t
anything important from the image covered by the text. The colour scheme of this magazine is
quite simple, neutral colours with black, grey, white and a hint of a golden yellow colour. These
colours go well together and give a rich aesthetic. The colours yellow, black and white are
contrasting colours, making it stand out and the text visible on the darker backgrounds or lighter
background.
The fonts are are a mix of sans serif and serif to make the subheading of the coverline stand out
more than the coverline, to draw attention to introduce the coverlines. A big bold font is used for
the title of the magazine to draw attention to know it is called to get future publishes. His name is
in a big yellow fancy font to make it stand out more and draw attention if you are/aren’t familiar
of his name, providing information which also ‘advertises him’. The less important information
like the date and issue is used in a smaller font as this doesn’t need as much attention as the
coverlines as the coverlines provide you with information you need to know about the magazine
before you read it. Finally, they use a different font to all, for the ‘Art and Design’ coverline to
make it fit the theme of art and design, giving it a more artsy font.
The studio image used is well lighted to emphasize his face and show his ’beauty and charm’
referring to the magazine being in the ‘Gentleman’s journal’. The lighting is also used to
emphasize his ring and show off his wealth which also ‘advertises him’.
The coverlines include the contents of the magazine, telling us the different sections such as
‘style’, ‘business’, ‘interview’ and ‘Art and Design’ split to show each section of the magazine.
These headlines don’t necessarily stand out as being stereotypically masculine but the coverlines
themselves are based around a balanced masculine/gentleman stories such as style and fashion
which is more of a ‘gentleman’s’ along with motorbike riding which is seen to be more of a
‘masculine’ lifestyle.
The color scheme of this double page spread (article)
are greys, very light blues and dark grey. These colours
are all neutral colours, representing a target audience
of both male and female, and of all ages as it is neutral
which is aimed at all. There is one simple image taken
professionally, as the background which contrasts from
the writing and bond himself as the background is pale
and the writing is black the writing is bold and and in
caps for the big heading and subheading. Bond is also
wearing a dark suit which contrasts from the
background. The image includes Bond’s famous car that
he uses in this movie. This will make the magazine’s
audience want to watch the film if they haven’t already
as it tells you a it of information about the movie and
Bond in general. This also allows Bond fans attractions
to the page as well.
This magazine article is heavily directed at girls. This is shown
through the use of stereotypical feminine colours such as pink
and purple which the article includes a lot of. They also have
aimed it at teenage girls through the use of their image as they
have a studio image making it professional-looking as well as
having them working out, making fan girls obsess. This also
includes their name and each band member’s name in case you
are unfamiliar with them, this introduces them to a whole new
audience and promotes them as well as the magazine. The
mise-en-scene of the page is used to break up text so that its
not all text as if it was just a page with solid writing they are
less likely for people to read it but they break it down with
images and quote boxes to make sure that the interest is still
their for the readers and make them want to carry on and
finish reading the article. The colour scheme also matches with
max’s shoes as he is wearing purple shoes and the colour
scheme is pink and purple mainly.
Research Summary
• What have you learned from your research?
From my research I have found different styles, layouts and types of both magazine covers
and articles to match their target audience and to fit the theme of the main focus for
example on the magazine front cover for ’movie’ with Katniss being the main focus, the
changed the logo to match theme theme of ‘the girl on fire’ and worked around her. The
most popular magazines have only one image to draw attention to that before reading.
However some magazines and articles have a mise-en-scene of images which usually
includes one main image with smaller images throughout, giving more images that the
audience want to see, as well as more promotion and advertisement for the
person/character. I also learnt that using different sizes, fonts and colours of text which
draws attention to different sections to grab attention form the audience to the sections
they want to read about.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
From this research I am going to make sure that for magazine covers/film posters I will only
use one image or a mise-en-scene with one main image with smaller images places around
as this will draw attention to someone without it being too busy.

So far my double page spread is looking good. It
is exactly how I had pictured it when planning
and it has stuck to my theme and plan well. I
have stuck to the colour scheme. The
techniques I have used so far include cutting
images out and into shapes through the use of
the quick selection, magic wand and object
select tool. I have also used the cutout filter to
make the images original and also to make it
look comic-like and to fit the theme I wanted. I
also used image adjustments to create the right
shade as well as using inner glows and the
different blending options to I have used an
overlay to create the old scroll look. The
weaknesses of my work so far are that I haven’t
got too many techniques so therefore I have
not had the chance to learn too many new
techniques and skills.
My magazine front cover so far I think does look good and it
looks professional. However I feel like the background
colour may need changing as it doesn’t fit my colour
scheme. I may also need to add more too it as it is quite
plain. The techniques I have used including various option
of the blending options for the text. This gave it the golden,
shiny look as well as giving them shadows to make it read-
able. I also used a colour balance on the eyes to make the
colour of her eyes stand out. I also need to fix the
background as some of the white is still showing front the
layer below.
So far my film poster is looking good and is almost finished. It is
exactly how I had pictured it when planning and it has stuck to my
theme and plan well. I have stuck to the colour scheme. The
techniques I have used so far include cutting images out and into
shapes through the use of the quick selection, magic wand and
object select tool. I have also used the cutout filter to make the

options to I have used an overlay to create the old scroll look. The
weaknesses of my work so far are that I haven’t got too many
techniques so therefore I have not had the chance to learn too
many new techniques and skills. I could also change the lighting
of some parts of the image as some are quite dark.

Adventure
Part II
The images I chose were images that would represent ideas of what I want the
game to look like. This included pyramids as the background which is how it will
set the setting of the film with it being set in the ancient Egyptian times.
You can choose between 2 characters. These 2 characters are the main characters
of the movie so therefore, you can be Aten or Shani.
The mazes and puzzles are all examples and ideas of what the game will be and
its function/aim. Like the impossible quiz, if you get the answer wrong after 3
lives you start the game from the beginning. The game will have 4 types of levels:
riddles, jigsaws which get harder as you progress, mazes which also get harder as
they go along, and find the object where there will be a big montage of images
laying out a scene, you will be told which object to find and then you must find it
in the image. Examples of these objects were the pixel art Egyptian artifacts like
the ones in the mood board.
Mario party- the game is similar to Mario party
as it has a series of mini games including mazes.
On the game there is a series of minigames that
you can play with different modes of ether solo,
4 player, 2v2, 1vs3, team minigames and solo.
My game has the option for either solo or 2
player games.
50 Rooms 3- this is similar the main aim and idea
of my game as the aim of my game is to
complete every level to escape the pyramids
safely with the treasure by completing a series of
puzzles and clues.
Jigsaw Puzzles Epic- this game is similar as the
aim of the game is to complete puzzles. Which is
similar to my game as one of the types of levels
within the game.
Waldo & Friends has a similar aspect to the game
I have planned to create. This is another section
of the game which includes finding hidden
objects.
Riddles and Answers- my game is also
similar to riddles and answers as a
section of the levels. However as mine
is also a mini game, it includes a
multichoice rather than tapping to
give the answer.
Style Sheet
This colour scheme is the colour scheme that I have chosen to make the actual game screen. The
level of the game I have chosen to create is the maze. For this they will need to get to the centre of
the maze, collect the artifact to move onto the next level. For this I will be using these colours to
create the character that will be moving around and the maze itself which will be pyramid themed
as the whole movie and game is set inside of a pyramid. They will have as many attempts as they
need to find the right path before the timer goes off. If the timer goes off or they have not made it
to the middle, they will loose and the game will restart from the beginning.
This colour scheme is what I have chosen to make the background of the screen on the game. This
will be an image of pyramids with moving clouds in the background. Therefore the colour scheme
fits to the sand and sky.
Escaping
TheNight
This is a brief idea of what I want my game to look like. The background is an original pixel drawing
which will be animated to make the clouds move in the background, a timer to be counting down
to show how the timer works and that is the limited time you have to complete the level before
you loose and need to restart. The design also includes the logo in the top left to make it obvious
that it is the game of ‘Escaping the Night’.
Contingency
What can go wrong? What can you do if it does?
Go back into lockdown Work from home if I can.
Computer could break Move to another computer.
Files may be lost Back all files up onto one drive.

possible.
Bus runs late Catch up with work when possible in own time or lesson.
Dehydrate Drink plenty of water.
Losing the internet Prepare to connect to a hotspot or find a possible offline

Computer may break Make sure everything is backed up onto one drive to
access it on other devices.

What could be a risk to you, others or the equipment? How can you make sure that doesn’t happen? What will
you do if it does?
Back ache Go for short walks every half an hour.
Eye strain Take a break from looking at the computer every so often.
Headache Take a break from looking at the computer every so often.

Evaluation
Research
The strengths of my research were that I had looked at many games to compare them to my idea.
This helped me see how different types of games were created which helped me see how I could
create mine. My researched also allowed me to come up with a definite plan as to what sort of
levels I wanted to represent in the game and I looked at similar themed games to help with this. The
strengths of my ancient Egyptian history research helped me to have a high understanding of what
was important to the Egyptians such as the pyramids and the mask of Anubis, it also allowed me t
have an understanding about the importance of the tears of gold that the mask cried whilst it was
being worn. My research helped me with the theme of my game and after researching films and
series with a similar idea it helped me put together my design ideas.
The weaknesses of my research were that I hadn’t researched into too much detail when it came to
the actual character designs and how to create different things. Because of this, I didn’t always use
the research time wisely when I could have for several things. For example if I had researched how
to create a walk cycle for my character I would have found that the image and canvas was too small,
so I didn’t have enough detail to create the walk cycle. With the walk cycle it would have shown a
better understanding in different animations techniques. Another weakness of my research was
that I mainly focused more on the background than the actual game, this was not intended but I did
end up spending more time creating this than the game.
Planning
The strengths of my planning were that I had a clear image of what I wanted to do. This allowed me
to plan how I was going to create my levels, what they were going to look like and quickly allow me
to create this too. My planning strengths also included creating ideas for different layouts and I
experimented before my production to see what would work and what wouldn’t.
The weaknesses of my planning were that I hadn’t planned out what my character was going to look
like, only my research helped me with a basic idea.
My planning helped with my production because…
One thing I could have done better with my planning was… This would have improved it by…
Time Management
I managed my time well as I had a set prepared plan for what I was going to make and then that
allowed to me to get straight on with it and get it done fairly quicky. With additional time I may have
been able to add more detail and maybe an extra level but I am happy with what I have got and it is
exactly how I wanted to make it. One thing that I have noticed, which I am working on, is that for
each project I always rush my production so it’s not always at the best it can be but by the time that
I have noticed it’s too late to recreate or add more detail. I feel like this happened for my animation.
Technical Qualities
I think that techniques I used are okay but I feel like it could be better. I have put enough detail into
the character. This was because I had made the canvas size to small to add a more detailed
character to the final levels. Compared to other similar existing products, my work may not be as
high standard with detail and completion of the game levels itself. However, it is still how I wanted it
to turn out and I am still proud of what I have made. I think that the animation I have done has
worked, better than I excepted for some parts of it and it is exactly how I had planned for it to turn
out.
Aesthetic Qualities
I think that the aesthetic qualities of my work are exactly how I wanted them to turn out. I really like
the look of my work and there is little that I would change about it. It fits the theme of the game
and movie well as it has the Egyptian theme that I was aiming for. Comparing it to other games
which are similar such as ‘Riddles and Answers’ my game has more detail and is more aesthetically
pleasing. I used shading on my pixel art and added texture to my work which really helped it look
better too.
Aural Qualities
I really like the background and the levels of my game. I think they were made well and made how I
wanted them to look. If I was to improve something I would probably improve the characters as
they weren’t done quite as high detailed as I would have liked them to be which would have made
the game a little bit more professional looking. I think that my game is creative and colourful which
is what I was aiming for too. I think the idea for the game and the way I created it was also just as
creative as I had come u with ways to make certain things possible. For example, for the riddle I had
to use a box to slow uncover the text so that it looked like it was being typed out by the person
playing the game.
Audience Appeal
My target audience was aimed at all ages but mainly younger adults/teenagers. I achieved this by
the gameplay as well as the aesthetic qualities and appeal. I created this through the Egyptian
setting which was created and would look impressive to this age group. The game itself may be
difficult for some children which is why it it is aimed more at slightly older audiences as it does get
more and more difficult as you progress through the game. However, the way that the game looks
and the music/sound effects in with the game appeal more to youger audiences as it’s upbeat,
bright and colourful.
Overall strengths and weaknesses of the final
package.
I think that overall the strengths of my work are my techniques and gameplay. This was a strength
because I think it went together really well. The game design and how I created the gameplay
worked really well and the techniques I used to create them.
However, my weaknesses are my pixel art as I had never done it before the project and wasn’t too
confident with it. Along with my music and sound effects which didn’t come out quite how I would
have liked it to.

Adventure pro forma

  • 3. Use this page to breakdown an existing film, using the Hero’s Quest theory. How does your chosen film fit with this? The Ordinary World Katniss’s district (district 12) is living in poverty after a failed rebellion years ago. The Call to Adventure They are called to a name picking to find out who will take part in the hunger games. The Refusal Katniss refuses to let primrose take part in the game and steps up as volunteer instead of her sister and Peeta is chosen as the second tribute. Mentor Help Peeta and Katniss are escorted to the capitol with Effie and their mentor Haymitch who is the only survivor of the hunger games from district 12 Crossing the Threshold When they arrive at the capitol they are put into training with the other tributes from every district. Test/Allies/Enemies During the training the capitol weren’t paying attention to her so to get their attention she fires an arrow towards the capitol and hits an apple on the buffet table which created tension between the game maker and Katniss, thinking this will put her in a bad position but it ended up getting her the highest score. During an interview Peeta confesses his love for Katniss and Katniss thinks he said it just to get sponsors so then is unsure if Peeta is an ally or enemy. Approach At the beginning of the hunger games Katniss instantly puts herself in danger by going straight to the middle to try and get supplies, she then runs away and escapes death. Ignoring Haymitch’s advice which was to stay away from the middle. Ordeal After being forced towards the others by the game makers, Katniss runs into the careers who has allied with Peeta, however when the careers try to kill Katniss, peeta suggests for them to wait over night to attack and when doing so, rue allies with Katniss to kill the careers by cutting down the tracker jacker nest. When stung by the tracker jackers Katniss’s vision goes blurry and she has hallucinations. Rue soon dies and she finds Peeta, a new rule is introduced to let there be 2 winner providing they are in the same district. Reward At the end of the games, Katniss and Peeta head to the centre of the games to be pushed to fight the last tribute. The game maker decides to change rules and change it back to 1 winner instead of 2 winner if they are from the same district. This causes Peeta and Katniss to turn on the capitol and threaten to eat the poisonous berries which would give them no winner, making the capitol give up and declare they are both winners. Road Back They are picked up by the plane from the hunger games where they can change, freshen up and prepare for more interviews as the victors Atonement When they get out of the hunger games they speak to their mentor and haymitch warns Katniss that she has made a mistake turning against the capitol. Return They return back to the district and are greeted by all of the members of the district. Katniss reunites with her family and Gale and President Snow plots his next move. The Hunger Games
  • 5. In the district, poor and living with her family Prim gets chosen to be in the hunger games, Katniss volunteers as tribute instead In the hunger games, fighting people, making allies and enemies Wins the games with Peeta after threatening to commit with the poisonous berries. Returns to the district famous from the games but still in poverty.
  • 6. Character type How they appear in your story The Hero Katniss. Main Character who goes to the hunger games after standing up as volunteer so that her sister doesn’t have to go. She also comes back victorious from them The Villain The villains are the game makers who try to get them to kill each other and also the other tributes, mainly the careers. President snow is the main villain being the head of the government running the games. The Helper Peeta joins Katniss after reuniting and wins the games together, soon to become the star-crossed lovers that they had the appearance of before the games. Rue also being one of Katniss’ allies helps the hero and is therefore a helper, she helps Katniss try to kill the careers and make a fire, hunt and survive. The Donor The donor would be all the people who gave sponsors for Katniss and Peeta. An example being Haymitch after he provides Katniss with the medicine she needs when she is hurt and providing her with a bow and arrows. The Dispatcher The dispatcher would be all of the people who helped them get ready and prepared for the games. Effie chooses the names, Haymitch mentors them and Cinna helps her prepare too. The Princess or prize The ‘princess’ of the film could be seen as primrose as she was saved by Katniss from going into the hunger games. However the prize was winning the games and returning back to her family. The False Hero There are a number of false heroes in the huger games as they are pretty much all false heroes because even Katniss and Peeta, who are the main characters and victors, killed people. Meaning they aren’t quite the heroes they seem to be. The capitol are the main false heroes for putting the characters in the games but then helping them out by providing them with supplies and helping

  • 17. The colour scheme of the magazine is reds and oranges mostly, giving off the fire theme as Katniss is known as ‘the girl on fire’ it also contrasts the background as the background is very lights. They also used a gradient blue text as the coverlines to make that bit also stand out compared to the rest of the cover. The font and style of the logo changes with each magazine cover to fit it to match the style of the film or a certain character from a film. For example, this magazine has changed the logo to fit the theme of the hunger games. More specifically, Katniss as she is the character featured on the cover and is also known as ‘the girl on fire’ in the movies so was suitable to fit her ‘theme’. They use lots of different fonts in the cover which also brings attention to different sections of the cover. For example, each of the coverlines have a heading which introduces the coverline, each of them have a different font, this is used to separate and contrast the headings to the coverlines. There is a mix of both serif and sans serif fonts which contrast too. The font of ‘il fuoco dentro’ (more information inside) is in a similar font to the original hunger games font on the book covers and DVD covers. There is only one main image on this magazine which is taken in a studio with her ‘throne’ to show that she is the ‘queen’ (head) of them all, being the main character and the hero of the story. Also using an image of the mocking jay which is a very big part of the story as she is the mocking jay, and the mocking jay symbolizes her and the film heavily. The studio lighting is used to emphasize the costume and contrast it with the background, with highlights on her body to make it stand out more and shadowing the throne and her legs to make it darker to represent her 2 personalities of ‘Katniss, the sweet innocent girl from district 12’ to ‘Katniss Everdeen, The girl on fire, the mocking jay and the protector of all district, the champion of the hunger games’. Like most magazine covers this one has a main image with bigger texts as the main heading and for the name of the magazine company, with smaller text for the coverlines/ this is done to draw attention using the images and main headline and then the smaller text is grabbing closer attention when they look at it through different fonts and bright colours. The text has a mix of capital and normal lettering to draw attention to different sections too. For example, the name of the magazine is in big, bold lettering which draws your attention to that first and then to the middle section of the image which has the name of the person featured and tells you the contents of inside the magazine explaining there is exclusive content from the protagonist (Katniss aka Jennifer)
  • 18. The magazine. Like most, has a main image with text around the borders. Sometimes this writing is only at one side like this one, sometimes it can be at both. This is used done so that there isn’t anything important from the image covered by the text. The colour scheme of this magazine is quite simple, neutral colours with black, grey, white and a hint of a golden yellow colour. These colours go well together and give a rich aesthetic. The colours yellow, black and white are contrasting colours, making it stand out and the text visible on the darker backgrounds or lighter background. The fonts are are a mix of sans serif and serif to make the subheading of the coverline stand out more than the coverline, to draw attention to introduce the coverlines. A big bold font is used for the title of the magazine to draw attention to know it is called to get future publishes. His name is in a big yellow fancy font to make it stand out more and draw attention if you are/aren’t familiar of his name, providing information which also ‘advertises him’. The less important information like the date and issue is used in a smaller font as this doesn’t need as much attention as the coverlines as the coverlines provide you with information you need to know about the magazine before you read it. Finally, they use a different font to all, for the ‘Art and Design’ coverline to make it fit the theme of art and design, giving it a more artsy font. The studio image used is well lighted to emphasize his face and show his ’beauty and charm’ referring to the magazine being in the ‘Gentleman’s journal’. The lighting is also used to emphasize his ring and show off his wealth which also ‘advertises him’. The coverlines include the contents of the magazine, telling us the different sections such as ‘style’, ‘business’, ‘interview’ and ‘Art and Design’ split to show each section of the magazine. These headlines don’t necessarily stand out as being stereotypically masculine but the coverlines themselves are based around a balanced masculine/gentleman stories such as style and fashion which is more of a ‘gentleman’s’ along with motorbike riding which is seen to be more of a ‘masculine’ lifestyle.
  • 19. The color scheme of this double page spread (article) are greys, very light blues and dark grey. These colours are all neutral colours, representing a target audience of both male and female, and of all ages as it is neutral which is aimed at all. There is one simple image taken professionally, as the background which contrasts from the writing and bond himself as the background is pale and the writing is black the writing is bold and and in caps for the big heading and subheading. Bond is also wearing a dark suit which contrasts from the background. The image includes Bond’s famous car that he uses in this movie. This will make the magazine’s audience want to watch the film if they haven’t already as it tells you a it of information about the movie and Bond in general. This also allows Bond fans attractions to the page as well.
  • 20. This magazine article is heavily directed at girls. This is shown through the use of stereotypical feminine colours such as pink and purple which the article includes a lot of. They also have aimed it at teenage girls through the use of their image as they have a studio image making it professional-looking as well as having them working out, making fan girls obsess. This also includes their name and each band member’s name in case you are unfamiliar with them, this introduces them to a whole new audience and promotes them as well as the magazine. The mise-en-scene of the page is used to break up text so that its not all text as if it was just a page with solid writing they are less likely for people to read it but they break it down with images and quote boxes to make sure that the interest is still their for the readers and make them want to carry on and finish reading the article. The colour scheme also matches with max’s shoes as he is wearing purple shoes and the colour scheme is pink and purple mainly.
  • 21. Research Summary • What have you learned from your research? From my research I have found different styles, layouts and types of both magazine covers and articles to match their target audience and to fit the theme of the main focus for example on the magazine front cover for ’movie’ with Katniss being the main focus, the changed the logo to match theme theme of ‘the girl on fire’ and worked around her. The most popular magazines have only one image to draw attention to that before reading. However some magazines and articles have a mise-en-scene of images which usually includes one main image with smaller images throughout, giving more images that the audience want to see, as well as more promotion and advertisement for the person/character. I also learnt that using different sizes, fonts and colours of text which draws attention to different sections to grab attention form the audience to the sections they want to read about. • What aspects of the research will you include within your on work? From this research I am going to make sure that for magazine covers/film posters I will only use one image or a mise-en-scene with one main image with smaller images places around as this will draw attention to someone without it being too busy.

  • 33. So far my double page spread is looking good. It is exactly how I had pictured it when planning and it has stuck to my theme and plan well. I have stuck to the colour scheme. The techniques I have used so far include cutting images out and into shapes through the use of the quick selection, magic wand and object select tool. I have also used the cutout filter to make the images original and also to make it look comic-like and to fit the theme I wanted. I also used image adjustments to create the right shade as well as using inner glows and the different blending options to I have used an overlay to create the old scroll look. The weaknesses of my work so far are that I haven’t got too many techniques so therefore I have not had the chance to learn too many new techniques and skills.
  • 34. My magazine front cover so far I think does look good and it looks professional. However I feel like the background colour may need changing as it doesn’t fit my colour scheme. I may also need to add more too it as it is quite plain. The techniques I have used including various option of the blending options for the text. This gave it the golden, shiny look as well as giving them shadows to make it read- able. I also used a colour balance on the eyes to make the colour of her eyes stand out. I also need to fix the background as some of the white is still showing front the layer below.

  • 44. The images I chose were images that would represent ideas of what I want the game to look like. This included pyramids as the background which is how it will set the setting of the film with it being set in the ancient Egyptian times. You can choose between 2 characters. These 2 characters are the main characters of the movie so therefore, you can be Aten or Shani. The mazes and puzzles are all examples and ideas of what the game will be and its function/aim. Like the impossible quiz, if you get the answer wrong after 3 lives you start the game from the beginning. The game will have 4 types of levels: riddles, jigsaws which get harder as you progress, mazes which also get harder as they go along, and find the object where there will be a big montage of images laying out a scene, you will be told which object to find and then you must find it in the image. Examples of these objects were the pixel art Egyptian artifacts like the ones in the mood board.
  • 45. Mario party- the game is similar to Mario party as it has a series of mini games including mazes. On the game there is a series of minigames that you can play with different modes of ether solo, 4 player, 2v2, 1vs3, team minigames and solo. My game has the option for either solo or 2 player games. 50 Rooms 3- this is similar the main aim and idea of my game as the aim of my game is to complete every level to escape the pyramids safely with the treasure by completing a series of puzzles and clues. Jigsaw Puzzles Epic- this game is similar as the aim of the game is to complete puzzles. Which is similar to my game as one of the types of levels within the game. Waldo & Friends has a similar aspect to the game I have planned to create. This is another section of the game which includes finding hidden objects. Riddles and Answers- my game is also similar to riddles and answers as a section of the levels. However as mine is also a mini game, it includes a multichoice rather than tapping to give the answer.
  • 46. Style Sheet This colour scheme is the colour scheme that I have chosen to make the actual game screen. The level of the game I have chosen to create is the maze. For this they will need to get to the centre of the maze, collect the artifact to move onto the next level. For this I will be using these colours to create the character that will be moving around and the maze itself which will be pyramid themed as the whole movie and game is set inside of a pyramid. They will have as many attempts as they need to find the right path before the timer goes off. If the timer goes off or they have not made it to the middle, they will loose and the game will restart from the beginning. This colour scheme is what I have chosen to make the background of the screen on the game. This will be an image of pyramids with moving clouds in the background. Therefore the colour scheme fits to the sand and sky. Escaping TheNight This is a brief idea of what I want my game to look like. The background is an original pixel drawing which will be animated to make the clouds move in the background, a timer to be counting down to show how the timer works and that is the limited time you have to complete the level before you loose and need to restart. The design also includes the logo in the top left to make it obvious that it is the game of ‘Escaping the Night’.

  • 57. Research The strengths of my research were that I had looked at many games to compare them to my idea. This helped me see how different types of games were created which helped me see how I could create mine. My researched also allowed me to come up with a definite plan as to what sort of levels I wanted to represent in the game and I looked at similar themed games to help with this. The strengths of my ancient Egyptian history research helped me to have a high understanding of what was important to the Egyptians such as the pyramids and the mask of Anubis, it also allowed me t have an understanding about the importance of the tears of gold that the mask cried whilst it was being worn. My research helped me with the theme of my game and after researching films and series with a similar idea it helped me put together my design ideas. The weaknesses of my research were that I hadn’t researched into too much detail when it came to the actual character designs and how to create different things. Because of this, I didn’t always use the research time wisely when I could have for several things. For example if I had researched how to create a walk cycle for my character I would have found that the image and canvas was too small, so I didn’t have enough detail to create the walk cycle. With the walk cycle it would have shown a better understanding in different animations techniques. Another weakness of my research was that I mainly focused more on the background than the actual game, this was not intended but I did end up spending more time creating this than the game.
  • 58. Planning The strengths of my planning were that I had a clear image of what I wanted to do. This allowed me to plan how I was going to create my levels, what they were going to look like and quickly allow me to create this too. My planning strengths also included creating ideas for different layouts and I experimented before my production to see what would work and what wouldn’t. The weaknesses of my planning were that I hadn’t planned out what my character was going to look like, only my research helped me with a basic idea. My planning helped with my production because… One thing I could have done better with my planning was… This would have improved it by…
  • 59. Time Management I managed my time well as I had a set prepared plan for what I was going to make and then that allowed to me to get straight on with it and get it done fairly quicky. With additional time I may have been able to add more detail and maybe an extra level but I am happy with what I have got and it is exactly how I wanted to make it. One thing that I have noticed, which I am working on, is that for each project I always rush my production so it’s not always at the best it can be but by the time that I have noticed it’s too late to recreate or add more detail. I feel like this happened for my animation.
  • 60. Technical Qualities I think that techniques I used are okay but I feel like it could be better. I have put enough detail into the character. This was because I had made the canvas size to small to add a more detailed character to the final levels. Compared to other similar existing products, my work may not be as high standard with detail and completion of the game levels itself. However, it is still how I wanted it to turn out and I am still proud of what I have made. I think that the animation I have done has worked, better than I excepted for some parts of it and it is exactly how I had planned for it to turn out.
  • 61. Aesthetic Qualities I think that the aesthetic qualities of my work are exactly how I wanted them to turn out. I really like the look of my work and there is little that I would change about it. It fits the theme of the game and movie well as it has the Egyptian theme that I was aiming for. Comparing it to other games which are similar such as ‘Riddles and Answers’ my game has more detail and is more aesthetically pleasing. I used shading on my pixel art and added texture to my work which really helped it look better too.
  • 62. Aural Qualities I really like the background and the levels of my game. I think they were made well and made how I wanted them to look. If I was to improve something I would probably improve the characters as they weren’t done quite as high detailed as I would have liked them to be which would have made the game a little bit more professional looking. I think that my game is creative and colourful which is what I was aiming for too. I think the idea for the game and the way I created it was also just as creative as I had come u with ways to make certain things possible. For example, for the riddle I had to use a box to slow uncover the text so that it looked like it was being typed out by the person playing the game.
  • 63. Audience Appeal My target audience was aimed at all ages but mainly younger adults/teenagers. I achieved this by the gameplay as well as the aesthetic qualities and appeal. I created this through the Egyptian setting which was created and would look impressive to this age group. The game itself may be difficult for some children which is why it it is aimed more at slightly older audiences as it does get more and more difficult as you progress through the game. However, the way that the game looks and the music/sound effects in with the game appeal more to youger audiences as it’s upbeat, bright and colourful.
  • 64. Overall strengths and weaknesses of the final package. I think that overall the strengths of my work are my techniques and gameplay. This was a strength because I think it went together really well. The game design and how I created the gameplay worked really well and the techniques I used to create them. However, my weaknesses are my pixel art as I had never done it before the project and wasn’t too confident with it. Along with my music and sound effects which didn’t come out quite how I would have liked it to.
