2. Pre-proposal
My idea for my FMP is to create a radio show style podcast. The idea from my project has been
influenced from listening to radio stations such as Capital FM and YorkMix Radio, daily since I was
young, which has influenced me to start working towards working in radio myself and these are my first
few steps to create my own 'radio show'.
This will be made through a range of software including adobe audition and garage band. The way I
propose to make this run through is by following a standard radio show's order. It will begin with an
original jingle for my station 'E-pop Radio'. It will then have a voice recording introduction before going
into a mix of pop songs and interviews. As it would be too long to put loads of songs into my FMP and so
that my work doesn't get copy righted, I am only going to play the introduction of the song, and the
ending of the song. That way I can still show how the songs fade in and out, but also make it into a more
realistic radio show as it will need music in between speaking. The order will go as 2 songs, speaking
(interview, news or general), jingle, 2 songs, jingle and then repeat. I am planning to have 2 interviews
within my project alongside 1 lot of news from the presenter (me) and then general chatting which will
include 'birthday shoutouts'.
I have decided to create this to use the work experience I did at YorkMix radio to help me develop my
'radio voice' as well as practicing daily essentials for most radio stations which will help me in my plans
of working in radio after college/university. I have studied the layout of radio stations for a while in
preparation for this project which has allowed me to see a pattern and comparison to each station and
their schedules which after this, I have noticed a pattern of either a jingle, news, adverts or speaking in
between every 2 or 3 songs. However, I am not going to include adverts as it would make it too long.
3. Initial Reaction
My initial reaction regarding the FMP was to create a radio show,
made into a podcast. After studying and researching radio show
schedules I figured out how I was going to create my FMP. I know that I
am good at scripting and I have some skills in editing audio due to my
work experience with YorkMix. So, I am going to use these skills to
create my FMP. I think this is going to go well as I have thought about
this thoroughly about this and how I am going to make this work.
Other ideas that I had thought of were to make just a general podcast
interviewing people from college about courses and information new
started may need for starting college. I had this idea from months ago
when I was trying to set up a media extra curriculum activity to do this.
However, I decided against this idea to create the radio show podcast
instead. I knew since the beginning that I wanted my FMP to be audio
based as it is what I want to get into, and I am thinking of going to
university to do. I know that the filming project and animation project
weren't my strongest points.

6. Mood Board Analysis
My mood board includes images of existing radio shows and
podcasts being produced and broadcasted. I also included
photos of events and interviews from existing radio station
websites and social media which represents the on-location
interview and the interview in studio that I plan to have in
my final project. I included photos of logos from different radio
stastions too as when I do my production, I will be creating a
logo for my station too. I included photos of audition to show
examples of the software I will be using to create and edit this.
7. Influence/Inspiration
Laura Castle is a breakfast presenter for YorkMix Radio. She is a co-host on air along side Ben Fry. However, he also has her own
show on Sunday mornings. She works full time for YorkMix and when she's not on air she is always busy with shows, hosting
events, meeting clients and a variety of administration tasks in the office.
I spoke to Laura, and she said that radio is an amazing industry to work in. She said it is challenging because there isn't always a
lot of money in the industry and as a new business they try and build the business as much as they can. Therefore, she has 3
additional jobs on top of being at YorkMix. She likes to approach her work with passion and enthusiasm and by working hard.
Laura teaches drama, she is a mentor for adults with learning disabilities, wanting to be in radio and is a duty manager at a
theatre. She really enjoys that all her jobs are in the creative media industry because it allows her 'to have fun and play' whilst
doing her job.
Laura believes that radio can be challenging and scary to new starters on the radio because you should stay relaxed when
speaking on air or people will be able to tell that you're nervous. This can be a struggle sometimes, especially for new starters as it
can be really nerve wrecking knowing that so many people are listening to you. But she always tells new starters and teaches
people to just let go and go with the flow. She has learnt to do this through doing musical theatre.

8. Influence/Inspiration
Roman Kemp is a breakfast show radio presenter alongside many other things he does/has done. He is the host
of capital’s breakfast show on weekdays between 6am and 10am, he has released a documentary with the BBC,
hosted the new year fireworks, various different tv events and shows including ‘Roman and Martin’s Weekend
Best’ and ‘I’m a celebrity’ and presented the concert for Ukraine recently and so much more. Roman always
approaches his work with one thing on his mind. He is always thinking about how he can help others. He is
always thinking about how he can entertain people and making sure that the always goes in with a big smile on
his face.
However, Roman knows that it can be difficult sometimes working in radio because it isn’t always as easy as
putting a smile on your face. “It’s part of my job to wear a big smile on my face but I am also aware that life
isn’t always like that” he experienced this most when a member of the capital breakfast team took his own life.
He is really passionate and happy with what he does. In an interview he described the show as his baby and
when he’s away from the show he misses talking to people and can’t wait to get back to make people smile
again.
9. Influence/Inspiration
Katie Thistleton is a radio 1 presenter/DJ. However, she is well known for her old job with the BBC channel, CBBC. She hosted on
CBBC for six years. She presented along side Hacket T-dog and other presenters. She also has her own book club tv show on CBBC
. As well as these she has also released a book called dear Katie which was a story, she wrote, based on her life and how she
struggled with mental health growing up. She is also a 'Place 2Be' ambassador which is a mental health group for young people.
Katie was working behind the scenes of CBBC long before she started presenting. From there she was offered an audition for the
chance to be a CBBC presenter at 23, which she took and then took the presenting job for 6 years, along with all the opportunities
she could take. Katie really enjoys reading and writing outside of all of her work too. Katie takes a big influence by her family and
all the kind and hard-working people that she is surrounded by in her life. She always loved being on CBBC and really enjoyed
being able to make people's day and entertaining people. She believes there is no better job in the world than being a CBBC
presenter because you get to enjoy yourself whilst entertaining other people. It's also a great time and place to meet new people.
Katie mentions in an interview with place2Be that she met all of her best friends from working on CBBC.
Katie's 'mantra' is 'do what makes you happy and do what makes you feel good' which is a rule she likes to stick to on a day-to-day
basis and is why she is doing her job, because it is something that makes her really happy and makes her feel good.
In university Katie studied NCTJ as well as getting a degree in English to do journalism. Whilst at university she was doing loads of
voluntary work for local radio stations and newsrooms. She was very desperate and competitive to get into the BBC so she started
applying to every job possible for the BBC and eventually was offered a trainee scheme. She also did a few months contracts with
different radio stations such as radio 4 before getting a job as a personal Assistant in CBBC.
10. Skills Audit
My confidence using adobe audition is 4 out of 5 at the moment as I
have some experience and I know what I am going to create. I know
how to create this. However, my confidence isn't a 5 out of 5 as I am
still learning some things and how to use some tools and effects. I
understand how to create a new project and I know how to import
files and edit them. I probably won’t need many of the tools for the
project I am creating apart from the razor tool to shorten clips and cut
out anything that isn’t necessary, the volume bar to create a fade in
and fade out effect and multiband compressor. Everything else will be
created on other software. Common problems that occur when it
comes to audition that could affect me is file sizes, if the file is too long
for the final export, then I may need to either cut some of the show
down or split the show into 2 halves. Also, if any of the files on the
project are lost or moved it can sometimes affect the file location
which will need to be relocated to keep the files on the project and
save my progress when doing my production editing.
11. Why are you making this project?
I decided that I am going to make this as my project
as it is something that I really enjoy doing, it will
help me gain more experience with scripting,
editing and hosting. Editing and shortening radio
shows is part of the training/expereince that I had
gained from my time at YorkMix Radio and I wanted
to carry on using those skills and that experience by
creating my own 'radio show'. This gave me the
idea to create a radio show style podcast for my
FMP.
12. Hopes for the FMP
My hopes for this project is to gain more
experience using adobe audition and give myself
experience of 'running a radio show' and learn
how to run, plan and create a show. To learn a
good schedule and plan for a radio show. This
will give me experience and something to put on
my portfolio for looking at universities and
future jobs. It gives examples of broadcasting as
both radio and podcasting.
13. Strengths and Limitations
A strength I have is with my audio skills, my speaking which will help me with
my project. This is because when I did my work experience and did ‘what’s on
guides’ for YorkMix. This allowed me to practice having a calm and clear voice
with clear pronunciation. A strength I have is my scripting and planning for
what I am going to say or might want to say to keep the flow of the talking
informal and chatty but not too informal. Finally, another strength I have for
my audio is editing on audition as I have practice from doing my ‘what’s on
guides’ and from doing my audio project at college too. This will help me as I
already have experience.
A limitation that would affect my work is that my interviews can't we with an
actual artist. However, I have an alternative as I am going to have a fake
celebrity. One weakness/limitation I have with using audition is that I won't
be using the software to it's full potential as I won't have to use any effects to
make it have a professional outcome. It won't have any voice effects apart
from maybe when I make my jingle. A problem/ limitation I have is that as I
don’t have the software at home, I can only do my production in college
which means I am limited on time.
14. Potential Research Activities
