4. Name
Gale’s name literally means tempest or
storm. This is very ironic, because he
always tries to be there for Katniss, but in
the end, him being there was the cause, in
a sense, of the chaos and uncertainty that
ensued with the love triangle.

5. Role
Gale is placed in the book as the replacement father for
Katniss. After her father dies in an accident at the
mine, Katniss depends on him to talk her off the ledge
and get her back on her feet, all while having to
provide for his family. He gives Katniss a shoulder to
cry on, and helps her put food on the table. He also in
a sense, gave her someone to help, since she gave some
of her food to Gale’s family, and became like a
daughter to them. This provided Katniss with an
immense sense of confidence in herself, which was a
very important psychological factor that helped her
win the Games.

6. If He Wasn’t There
If Gale wasn’t in the book, things would not play out
nearly as similarly as they did. Without him, Katniss
would’ve become disheartened by the death of her father,
and maybe wouldn’t even be alive to take Prim’s place in
the Games. Maybe she wouldn’t be able to provide for her
family in the Winter without Gale’s expertise with
snares and traps. Even if she was alive and went to the
Games, she would probably be very bitter at life, because
of her father and the reaping, Peeta wouldn’t go for the
star crossed lovers thing, and they would probably both
die. It would be like any other Hunger Games; a death
sentence for a teenager in District 12.

Haymitch is a male, has grey eyes, and dark brown hair.
Haymitch is described as a "paunchy, middle-aged man.”
Only living tribute from District 12 up until the 74th Hunger
Games.
Haymitch participated in the second Quarter Quell at the age
of sixteen.
After winning the Hunger Games, he became an alcoholic.
Being the only surviving Hunger Games champion from District
12, Haymitch was forced to mentor all of its tributes.
Therefore, he was a mentor for Peeta and Katniss before they
entered the Games.
Haymitch is often sarcastic and sober, which irritates Katniss.
After being in the arena, Katniss realizes that drinking was
Haymitch’s form of escape from the nightmares caused by his
experiences as a tribute.
He is also good at communicating with Katniss by sending or
not sending gifts during the Hunger Games.

Peeta is gentle and kind, but when he is threatened, fights
like a maniac. He's bold; he announced he was in love with
her to the entire nation. He's kind and Katniss thinks of him
as a "dandelion in the spring". Peeta thinks very well on his
feet and has a very likable personality and a flair for
showmanship. He is also wise beyond his years in his
approach to the Games and is able to work with Haymitch
on goals and strategy. Unlike Katniss, he is able to keep a
secret and is trusted by Haymitch. Peeta is very selfless,
and willing to do anything to protect Katniss, he saved her
and her family from starvation. Peeta is also very
persuasive, able to sway crowds in his likable way and have
them do what he says. It was his declaration of love for
Katniss that began to sway the crowd to rethink the morality
of the Hunger Games. Peeta is an excellent liar, but only lies
to protect the people he loves.
