This centre is an example of a public service sector because it is helping to enhance the quality of life and well-being of
citizens (Lunn, 2020, p.3). It also fits 3 specific focus areas that are important
- providing recreation because it reinforces ideals of establishing a healthy lifestyle to users
-providing opportunities for recreation to disadvantaged clients
-providing opportunities that are deemed valuable to society that would otherwise not be provided by private sector because
of cost
This is connected to coaching, physical education, and/or recreation because it provides all three of those things within it.
Swimming lessons, community weight gym, and nutritional courses and resistance training courses are available for people of
all ages.
3. Mount Douglas Secondary School

Public Schools are an example of the public service sector because they are free, and physical
education classes are mandatory up until grade 11, in which students have the chance to
participate in selective courses like games, weightlifting, nutrition. Public schools also offer a wide
variety of sports (both indoor and outdoor) year-round that allow students to pursue their
passions and excel to higher levels. This connects to coaching, physical education, and/or
recreation because all three are available to students who attend public schools during every
semester.
4. Oak Bay Recreation Centre

This rec centre is an example of a public service sector because it provides pool, gym,
and other facility access for a very cost-efficient and friendly price. This municipal rec
centre encourages the development of recreation programs within the community, as
well as acts as a catalyst for recreation development in the community (Lunn, 2020, p.
4). This connects to coaching, physical education, and/or recreation because Oak Bay
Rec. has many facilities that provide various forms of the aforementioned criteria, and
includes a indoor soccer bubble which allows for weekly local sporting leagues (indoor
soccer, football, field hockey) at a very reduced price.
5. Orange Theory Fitness

Orange theory fitness fits into the commercial service sector because it provides a
specific service which the consumer pays for (Lunn, 2020, p. 6). Orange Theory
specifically fits into indoor commercial recreation and provides full body workouts that
are concise and tracked using science to motivate and actively monitor individual’s fitness
journeys. Orange theory fitness connects to coaching, physical education, and/or
recreation because it provides all three in its unique delivery system of 30-minute classes,
which are run by a coach and very intense.
6. Field Hockey BC

Field Hockey BC is the provincial governing body for field hockey in the province of British
Colombia, and is a part of the commercial service sector because it has high performance
programs that individuals pay for after selection, in order to participate. FHBC provides
high level specialized training that in turn pay for quality coaches and experts (nutrition,
sport psych etc.) (Lunn, 2020, pg. 6) for the athletes to learn from. This provincial sporting
organization connects to coaching, physical education, and/or recreation because
athletes pay for quality coaching and a high performance environment in which they can
grow their skills while learning the education required to become an elite athlete.
7. Vancouver Whitecaps (Youth Team)

The Vancouver Whitecaps youth team(s) is part of the commercial (private) sector
because it is a sporting organization that feeds into the senior whitecaps team that play
in the MLS. The youth team is scouted out at various ages, and then parents pay for their
children to be part of the high-performance program in hopes of moving up into the MLS
roster. The whitecaps make revenue off spectators and corporate sponsors, and this is
why it falls under the commercial sector. The Whitecaps connect to coaching, physical
education, and/or recreation through its extensive coaching and scouting network, high
performance facilities, and various programs and experts in different health and wellness
areas.
8. Sport BC
Type of Service: Voluntary

Sport BC is part of the voluntary service sector because it is a non-profit sport federation that
overlooks over 60 provincial sport organizations and is committed to building the organized
sport landscape in BC. Sport BC is volunteer driven and is closest to local communities and
programs which is why it falls under the voluntary umbrella (Lunn, 2020, pg. 8). Sport BC is
connected to coaching, physical education, and/or recreation because it is the governing body
for the majority of organized sports within BC, and such is constantly providing coaching,
education, and abilities and opportunities for recreation.
9. Canadian Sport Institute (Pacific)

Canadian Sport Institute (BC) is part of the voluntary sector because it provides resources for
high performance athletes through cutting edge technology and training facilities to help
them medal at Olympic and Paralympic games. CSIBC is connected to coaching, physical
education, and/or recreation because it provides the resources for high performance athletes
in BC a place to train in all aspects of their sports, whilst also promoting growth on a personal
side through many volunteer led programs in association with corporations and sponsors.
10. Vancouver Men’s Field Hockey League

The VMFHL is part of the voluntary sector because it is a volunteer based non-profit sport
organization that over looks men’s field hockey within the lower mainland area and has
membership fees and donations as its main source of income. Five key features of non-profit’s
are that they are organized, private, non-profit, self governing, and voluntary (Lunn, 2020, pg.
8). VMFHL is connected to coaching, physical education, and/or recreation because it provides
the opportunity for all three to every single member at various age levels, through
collaborations with FHBC.
